The Neolamarckia (Rubiaceae) genus is composed of only two species: N. cadamba and N. macrophylla. Both species are fast-growing plants with significant industrial and medicinal values. Here, we provided a high-quality chromosome-level assembly of the N. macrophylla genome for the first time. The assembled genome size was approximately 598.43 Mb, with contig N50 and scaffold N50 lengths of 23.41 and 24.54 Mb, respectively. The two species diverged at 6.5-23.5 Mya and one whole-genome duplication (WGD) event was detected to occur prior to their divergence. The assembled genomes showed that N. m…

The Zinc Iodide-Osmium Tetroxide method (ZIO) is recognized for its effectiveness in impregnating the endomembrane system, particularly Golgi bodies. Nevertheless, its application in plant cell studies remains limited. This research focuses on Palicourea rigida Kunth, a Rubiaceae species known for its colleters producing a mixed secretion primarily composed of lipophilic substances. The aim of our study was to assess the effectiveness of the ZIO method in investigating ultrastructural variations of epithelial cells during the secretory phase. Samples were fixed for 12 h in a solution containin…

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Macrosphyra longistyla (DC.) Hook.f. ex Hiern, (Rubiaceae), has been traditionally used as an anti-hemorrhagic agent.
AIM: This study investigated the anti-haemorrhagic efficacy of an ethanolic leaf extract of M. longistyla against AUB in rats.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An incomplete abortion model was induced in early pregnant rats (n = 6/group) through oral treatment with mifepristone and misoprostol. Subsequently, rats received daily oral doses of M. longistyla at 200 and 400 mg/kg for a one-week period. Treatment effects were assessed by measurements of volum…

Capirona macrophylla is a Rubiaceae known as "mulateiro". Ethnobotanical extracts have been used for skin treatment and in the management of leishmaniasis and malaria.ObjectivesThe metabolites in aqueous extracts from wood bark, leaves, and stems were identified, and their in silico docking and in vitro cellular efficacy against Leishmania amazonensis and Plasmodium falciparum were evaluated.MethodsThe extracts were analyzed by UHPLC/HRMSn using untargeted metabolomics approach with MSDial, MSFinder, and GNPS software for metabolite identification and spectra clustering. The most abundant meta…

CONTEXT: Uncaria tomentosa D.C. (Rubiaceae) has several biological activities, including activity against resistant Candida strains. The synergistic interaction with terbinafine or fluconazole can be an important alternative to overcome this resistance.
OBJECTIVES: The potential synergy between a water insoluble fraction (WIF) from Uncaria tomentosa bark and the antifungals terbinafine (TRB) and fluconazole (FLZ) against non-Candida albicans resistant strains was investigated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: TRB and FLZ, alone and combined with WIF, were tested by the checkerboard procedure using the…

The accumulation of hydrophilic bile acids in the liver is considered to play a pivotal role in the induction of hepatic injury. Yin-Chen-Hao-Tang (YCHT) decoction is an aqueous extract from three different herbs: Artemisia capillaries Thunb (Compositae), Gardenia jasminoides Ellis (Rubiaceae), Rheum officinale Baill (Polygonaceae), which has been recognized as a hepatoprotective agent for various types of liver diseases. Therefore, we used an experimental of biliary atresia model to test that YCHT plays a regulatory role in the pathogenesis of hepatic fibrosis. Hepatic damage with fibrosis wa…

Keetia leucantha is a West African tree used in traditional medicine to treat several diseases among which parasitic infections. The dichloromethane extract of leaves was previously shown to possess growth-inhibitory activities on Plasmodium falciparum, Trypanosoma brucei brucei and Leishmania mexicana mexicana with low or no cytotoxicity (>100 μg/ml on human normal fibroblasts) (Bero et al. 2009, 2011). In continuation of our investigations on the antitrypanosomal compounds from this dichloromethane extract, we analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS the essential oil of its leaves obtained by hydrodist

The objective of this study was to investigate the hepatoprotective effect of a bark extract of Bathysa cuspidata extract (BCE) in a murine model of severe liver injury induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4) ). Forty-two Wistar rats were randomized into six groups of seven animals each: Group 1(G1): CCl(4) ; Group 2 (G2): dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) + CCl(4) ; Group 3 (G3): BCE 400 mg/kg alone; Group 4 (G4): BCE 200 mg/kg + CCl(4) ; Group 5 (G5): BCE 400 mg/kg + CCl(4) ; Group 6 (G6): DMSO alone. The extract was administered by gavage for 18 days beginning 6 days prior to the first application

The stems of Nauclea officinalis have been utilized as a crude drug in China, so other parts of the plant are abandoned, resulting in a waste of traditional Chinese medicine resources. To determine the distribution and content of the alkaloids, phenolic acids and iridoid in different organs (stem, branch, leaf and bark) of this plant, a reliable method has been established using LC-MS/MS. Nine constituents, namely strictosamide, vincosamide, chlorogenic acid, sweroside, naucleamide B, protocatechuic acid, pumiloside, vanillic acid and cryptochlorogenic acid, were simultaneously determined in 6

The antimalarial activities of crude extracts and 17 fractions from the partition of 80%-methanolic extracts of three plants (the stem bark of Croton mubango, the stem bark of Nauclea pobeguinii and the leaves of Pyrenacantha staudtii) used as antimalarial remedies in the Democratic Republic of Congo were studied both in vitro (against Plasmodium falciparum) and in mice infected with Pl. berghei berghei. The toxic effects of dried aqueous extracts of the plants were also investigated, in uninfected mice. The most active crude extracts in vitro, with median inhibitory concentrations (IC(50)) of

BACKGROUND: Onchocerciasis caused by Onchocerca volvulus is the world's second leading infectious cause of blindness. There is currently no cure for the disease. Ivermectin, the current drug of choice is only microfilaricidal and suboptimal response to it is increasingly being reported. Thus, in contributing to the search for a cure, crude extracts and chromatographic fractions of Craterispermum laurinum and Morinda lucida were screened in vitro, against the bovine and most popular model of the parasite, Onchocerca ochengi.
METHODS: Extracted parasites were cultured in RPMI-1640 based media f
