Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy in Recurrent MDD Patients With Residual Symptoms: Alterations in Resting-State Theta Oscillation Dynamics Associated With Changes in Depression and Rumination.

Many patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) suffer from residual symptoms. Rumination is a specific known risk factor for the onset, severity, prolongation, and relapse of MDD. This study aimed to examine the efficacy and EEG substrates of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) in alleviating depression and rumination in an MDD population with residual symptoms. We recruited 26 recurrent MDD individuals who had residual symptoms with their current antidepressants to participate in the 8-week MBCT intervention. We evaluated the efficacy and changes in the dynamics of resting-state th

Cognitive behavioral based group psychotherapy focusing on repetitive negative thinking: Decreased uncontrollability of rumination is related to brain perfusion increases in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.

Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a core process underlying various psychiatric disorders. 'Uncontrollability of rumination (UOR)' is one the most maladaptive factors of rumination, but little is known on how cognitive behavioral focused RNT psychotherapy may alter brain activity. In a subsample of 47 patients suffering from RNT who also underwent brain imaging (registered RCT trial NCT01983033), we evaluated the effect of cognitive behavioral based group psychotherapy (CBGP) (n = 25) as compared to a delayed treatment control group (DTCG) (n = 22) on frontolimbic brain perfusion with a fo

Effect of cognitive bias modification-memory on depressive symptoms and autobiographical memory bias: two independent studies in high-ruminating and dysphoric samples.

Memory bias is a risk factor for depression. In two independent studies, the efficacy of one CBM-Memory session on negative memory bias and depressive symptoms was tested in vulnerable samples. We compared positive to neutral (control) CBM-Memory trainings in highly-ruminating individuals (N = 101) and individuals with elevated depressive symptoms (N = 100). In both studies, participants studied positive, neutral, and negative Swahili words paired with their translations. In five study-test blocks, they were then prompted to retrieve either only the positive or neutral translations. Immediatel

Treating insomnia during pregnancy improves bedtime procrastination, rumination, anxiety, and positive affect: a randomized controlled trial of cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based therapies for prenatal insomnia.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Insomnia is common in pregnancy and is associated with maladaptive sleep behaviors and poor emotion regulation. Cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTI) and Perinatal Understanding of Mindful Awareness for Sleep (PUMAS) are effective interventions for alleviating prenatal insomnia. However, clinical benefits outside the primary target of sleep remain unclear. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) explored the effectiveness of CBTI and PUMAS on bedtime procrastination, insomnia-focused rumination, anxiety, affect, and mindfulness. METHODS: Secondary analysis of a sin

BACKGROUND: Depression is a serious issue in the world, affecting over 350 million people. Although it may present at any age, adolescence to early adulthood is the most common age of onset, and females are affected twice as much as males. Rumination is a specific known risk factor for the onset, severity, prolongation, and relapse of depression. Relapse prevention in recurrent depression is a significant public health problem, and antidepressants are the current first-line treatment approach. AIM: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy in alleviating

State rumination predicts inhibitory control failures and dysregulation of default, salience, and cognitive control networks in youth at risk of depressive relapse: Findings from the RuMeChange trial.

BACKGROUND: Trait rumination is a habitual response to negative experiences that can emerge during adolescence, increasing risk of depression. Trait rumination is correlated with poor inhibitory control (IC) and altered default mode network (DMN) and cognitive control network (CCN) engagement. Provoking state rumination in high ruminating youth permits investigation of rumination and IC at the neural level, highlighting potential treatment targets. METHODS: Fifty-three high-ruminating youth were cued with an unresolved goal that provoked state rumination, then completed a modified Sustained A

Effects of Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) on Symptom Change, Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, and Rumination in Clients With Depression, Anxiety, and Stress.

Objectives: Over the past decade there has been an increasing interest in exploring self-compassion as a related and complementary construct to mindfulness. Increases in self-compassion may predict clinical outcomes after MBCT and cultivation of compassion toward self and others is central to CFT. This pilot study compared the impact of MBCT applying implicit self-compassion instructions and CFT employing explicit self-compassion instructions on symptom change, mindfulness, self-compassion, and rumination. Method: This non-randomized wait-list controlled study (N = 58) with two intervention ar

Antecedents, outcomes and measurement of work related-cognition in non-work time: A multistudy report using the work-related rumination questionnaire in two languages.

According to the perseverative cognition hypothesis, prolonged activation for example, via work-related rumination impairs recovery and thereby poses a risk to employee health. The extent to which gender, age, occupation or longitudinal stress exposure may alter work-related rumination is an ongoing debate. Whether group or longitudinal comparisons of work-related rumination are valid, however, has never been tested. In this multistudy report, we therefore investigated measurement invariance of the widely used Work-Related Rumination Questionnaire (WRRQ) across gender, age, occupation, and lon

The roles of cognitive avoidance, rumination and negative affect in the association between abusive supervision in the workplace and non-clinical paranoia in a sample of workers working in France.

This study examined the relationship between abusive supervision and non-clinical paranoia and explored which cognitive mechanisms are mediating this association (i.e. rumination, cognitive avoidance and negative affect). A sample of two hundred and five French-speaking workers currently in employment in France was recruited to fill in a battery of online questionnaires comprising of the French adaptations of the Abusive Supervision Scale, the State Social Paranoia Scales, the Depression and Anxiety and Stress Scales, the Cognitive Avoidance Questionnaire and the Mini-Cambridge Exeter Repetiti

Improvement in self-reported cognitive functioning but not in rumination following online working memory training in a two-year follow-up study of remitted major depressive disorder.

Self-reported subjective cognitive difficulties (subjective deficits) and rumination are central residual cognitive symptoms following major depressive disorder (MDD). These are risk factors for more a severe course of illness, and despite the considerable relapse risk of MDD, few interventions target the remitted phase, a high-risk period for developing new episodes. Online distribution of interventions could help close this gap. Computerized working memory training (CWMT) shows promising results, but findings are inconclusive regarding which symptoms improve following this intervention, and

Efficacy of Internet-based rumination-focused cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based intervention with guided support in reducing risks of depression and anxiety: A randomized controlled trial.

Rumination and worry are common risk factors of depression and anxiety. Internet-based transdiagnostic interventions targeting individuals with these specific risks may be an effective way to prevent depression and anxiety. This three-arm randomized controlled trial compared the efficacy of Internet-based rumination-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (RFCBT), mindfulness-based intervention (MBI), and psychoeducation (EDU) control among 256 at-risk individuals. Participants' levels of rumination, worry, depressive, and anxiety symptoms were assessed at post-intervention (6 weeks), 3-month, an

Aberrant resting-state functional connectivity in limbic and cognitive control networks relates to depressive rumination and mindfulness: A pilot study among adolescents with a history of depression.

BACKGROUND: Resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) research among adults indicates abnormalities within and between neural networks during acute depressive episodes, some of which are likely to remain into remission. The examination of RSFC among adolescents within the remitted state of MDD may implicate markers of illness course during a critical developmental window wherein secondary prevention can be implemented. METHODS: RSFC data were collected on a 3.0T GE scanner from adolescents (12-18, M=15.61, SD=1.90; 57% female) in full or partial remission from MDD (rMDD; n=23) and age- and

Assessment and Disruption of Ruminative Episodes to Enhance Mobile Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Just-in-Time Adaptive Interventions in Clinical Depression: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: A just-in-time adaptive intervention (JITAI) is "designed to address the dynamically changing needs of individuals via the provision of the type or amount of support needed, at the right time when needed." If and how rumination-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (RFCBT), the gold standard, blocks emotional cascades underlying rumination is unclear. Furthermore, cognitive behavioral therapy has been successfully used as a mobile variant, but RFCBT has not been adapted for a mobile variant (mobile RFCBT [MRFCBT]) or for a JITAI variant. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to pilot-test a

Treatment of worry and comorbid symptoms within depression, anxiety, and insomnia with a group-based rumination-focused cognitive-behaviour therapy in a primary health care setting: a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) has been described as a maintaining transdiagnostic factor for psychopathology within the areas of depression, anxiety and insomnia. We investigated the effects of rumination-focused cognitive-behaviour therapy (RF-CBT) in a group format at a primary health care centre on symptoms of depression, anxiety, insomnia, RNT, and quality of life. The participants presented clinical symptom levels of worry and at least two disorders among anxiety disorders, major depressive disorder, and insomnia disorder. METHODS: A randomised controlled superiority p

Study protocol for RUFUS-A randomized mixed methods pilot clinical trial investigating the relevance and feasibility of rumination-focused cognitive behavioral therapy in the treatment of patients with emergent psychosis spectrum disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Psychosis spectrum disorders are characterized by both positive and negative symptoms, but whereas there is good effect of treatment on positive symptoms, there is still a scarcity of effective interventions aimed at reducing negative symptoms. Rumination has been proposed as an important and fundamental factor in the development and maintenance of symptoms across psychiatric diagnoses, and there is a need to develop effective interventions targeting rumination behaviors and negative symptoms in patients with psychotic disorders. The aim of the current study is to investigate the

Cognitive bias modification for interpretation with and without prior repetitive negative thinking to reduce worry and rumination in generalised anxiety disorder and depression: protocol for a multisession experimental study with an active control condition.

INTRODUCTION: Worry and rumination are two forms of repetitive thinking characterised by their negative content and apparently uncontrollable nature. Although worry and rumination share common features and have been conceptualised as part of a transdiagnostic repetitive negative thinking (RNT) process, it remains unclear whether they share the same underlying cognitive mechanisms. This multisession experimental study investigates the tendency to make negative interpretations regarding ambiguous information as a cognitive mechanism underlying RNT. We compare multisession cognitive bias modifica

A parallel-group randomized controlled trial of a culturally adapted, rumination-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (RFCBT) guided self-help targeting repetitive negative thoughts in Japanese female university students - study protocol for the RESUME-CBT trial.

BACKGROUND: Female university students face an elevated risk of developing common mental health problems, including depression and anxiety. Rumination, a specific form of repetitive negative thought (RNT), is a well-documented risk factor for these conditions. Rumination-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (RFCBT) represents a promising intervention for the prevention and treatment of depression and anxiety, fostering mental well-being during young adulthood. Although RFCBT has demonstrated effectiveness in numerous randomized controlled trials (RCTs), cultural adaptation has emerged as a cri
