Natural history of alpha-thalassemia X-linked intellectual disability syndrome: A case report of a 45-year-old man.

We have followed the clinical course of a 45-year-old man with a severe form of alpha-thalassemia X-linked intellectual disability syndrome for 40 years. The most challenging health issue is the combination of rumination, drooling, and vomiting. The patient achieved present adaptive and motor skills in his teenage years. He is able to move on the floor in a sitting position. He seems happy and has not shown any behavioral or psychiatric symptoms. New signs not described in the literature before are accelerated growth after puberty and atypical sleeping position with upper body resting on legs.

Anxiety in Asperger's syndrome: Assessment in real time.

Anxiety is a major problem for many people with Asperger's syndrome who may have qualitatively different fears from a non-Asperger's syndrome population. Research has relied on measures developed for non-Asperger's syndrome populations that require reporting past experiences of anxiety, which may confound assessment in people with Asperger's syndrome due to problems with autobiographical memory as are often reported in this group.Experience sampling methodology was used to record real-time everyday experiences in 20 adults with Asperger's syndrome and 20 neurotypical adults. Within-subject ana

Prevalence of functional gastrointestinal diseases in a cohort of Sri Lankan adolescents: comparison between Rome II and Rome III criteria.

Little is known about the prevalence of functional gastrointestinal diseases (FGDs) in adolescents, especially in developing countries. This cross-sectional survey conducted in a semi-urban school in Sri Lanka, assessed the prevalence of whole spectrum of FGDs in 427 adolescents (age 12-16 years) using a validated self-administered questionnaire. According to Rome III criteria, 123 (28.8%) adolescents had FGDs. Of them, 59 (13.8%) had abdominal-pain-related FGDs [irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) 30, functional dyspepsia 15, functional abdominal pain 13 and abdominal migraine 1]. Prevalence of fu

First Report and Comparative Genomic Analysis of a Mycoplasma mycoides Subspecies capri HN-A in Hainan Island.

Mycoplasma mycoides subspecies capri (Mmc) is one of the six Mycoplasma mycoides cluster (Mm cluster) members, which can cause "MAKePS" (Mastitis, Arthritis, Keratoconjunctivitis, Pneumonia, Septicemia) syndrome in ruminants. These symptoms can occur alone or together in individuals or flocks of goats. However, little is known about the epidemic Mmc strains in Hainan Island, China. We aimed to isolate the endemic Mmc strains in Hainan Island and reveal their molecular characteristics by genomic sequencing and comparative genomics to mitigate the impact of Mmc on local ruminant farming. Here, t

Metacognitive therapy in recurrent depression: a case replication series in Denmark.

Metacognitive therapy (MCT) for depression is derived from the Wells and Matthews (1994) self-regulatory model, in which a Cognitive-Attentional Syndrome (CAS) is the cause of psychological disorders. MCT for depression focuses on identifying patients' CAS and helps them to stop it. The CAS consists of worry, rumination and dysfunctional coping strategies. The focus in MCT is on removing the CAS by challenging positive and negative metacognitive beliefs and eliminating dysfunctional behaviors. In this case series, MCT was delivered to four depressed Danes and treatment was evaluated in 5-11 se

Gastro-oesophageal reflux in children.

Gastro-oesophageal reflux in children is different in several aspects from in adults. Pathophysiologically, 50% of reflux episodes are due to increased abdominal pressure which overcomes the lower oesophageal sphincter pressure. This pathophysiological abnormality disappears in children at the age of 1.5-2 years. Treatment is therefore different and aimed at thickening the gastric contents to inhibit reflux (Nutrition, Gaviscon, Algicon). The child is placed in the anti-Trendelburg position when asleep. No further investigation or intensification of treatment is necessary in young children und

Neural, psychological, and daily life evidence for a transdiagnostic process of affective dysregulation in depression and chronic widespread pain.

Chronic pain and depression are leading causes of disability, frequently co-occurring and exacerbating each other. This cross-sectional study investigated putative transdiagnostic processes of affective dysregulation in fibromyalgia (FMS) and major depressive disorder (MDD) using psychometric questionnaires (Beck Depression Inventory-II, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, Perceived Stress Scale, Widespread Pain Index, Somatic Symptom Disorder B Criteria Scale 12), ecological momentary assessments, and real-time functional magnetic resonance imagi

A naturalistic investigation of cognitive-affective dysfunction in anorexia nervosa: The role of inefficiency.

OBJECTIVE: Research has shown that rumination and negative affect are elevated in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), but the underlying origins remain unclear. Drawing from the theoretical framework of the Goal Progress Theory of rumination, we propose that heightened feelings of "inefficiency" (i.e., low self-efficacy) in AN might play an important role in these dysfunctional cognitive-affective processes. METHOD: Thirty-two weight-recovered participants with a history of AN and 32 healthy control participants filled out questionnaires regarding rumination and affect six times a day over a

Studies on South African cardiac glycosides. II. Observations on the clinical and haemodynamic effects of cotyledoside.

In guinea-pigs, the oral and subcutaneous LD50 values were very similar (cf. 0,173 mg/kg over 48 h with 0,116 mg/kg over 24 and 48 h). When dosed subcutaneously, a cumulative effect was observed. Intravenous administration of cotyledoside to anaesthetized guinea-pigs resulted in: dyspnoea, increased heart rates and blood pressures, and electrocardiagraphic changes typical of cardiac glycoside poisoning. A positive cardiac inotropic effect was succeeded by a positive chronotropic one. In sheep, acute and subacute intoxication resulted in ruminal, respiratory and cardiac changes. The signs inclu

Down or up? Explaining positive and negative emotions in parents of children with Down's syndrome: Goals, cognitive coping, and resources.

BACKGROUND: Some studies find that parents of children with Down's syndrome may experience symptoms of depression, while other studies find that parents adapt well. This study aimed to clarify this variability in adaptive strength by investigating a stress-coping model to explain depressive symptoms and positive affect. METHOD: Questionnaires were completed by 553 parents of children (aged 0-18) with Down's syndrome, containing measures of goal disturbance, cognitive coping, social support, partner bonding, and coping self-efficacy. RESULTS: Different models for positive affect and depressiv

Occurrence of malformed calves in April-May 2021 indicates an unnoticed 2020 emergence of Schmallenberg virus in Denmark.

During the European emergence of Schmallenberg virus (SBV) in 2011, examination of Culicoides spp. showed that SBV-infected midges were present across Denmark. However, SBV-associated malformations in ruminant species have not been reported in Denmark. In April 2021, seven calves with severe congenital generalized arthrogryposis and reduced body weight originating from a narrow region of the Jutlandic peninsula were submitted for examination. Analysis of fetal brain tissue for SBV viral RNA and pleural effusion for fetal anti-SBV antibodies identified SBV as the cause of the congenital syndrom

Mycobacterium avium ss. paratuberculosis Zoonosis - The Hundred Year War - Beyond Crohn's Disease.

The factitive role of Mycobacterium avium ss. paratuberculosis (MAP) in Crohn's disease has been debated for more than a century. The controversy is due to the fact that Crohn's disease is so similar to a disease of MAP-infected ruminant animals, Johne's disease; and, though MAP can be readily detected in the infected ruminants, it is much more difficult to detect in humans. Molecular techniques that can detect MAP in pathologic Crohn's specimens as well as dedicated specialty labs successful in culturing MAP from Crohn's patients have provided strong argument for MAP's role in Crohn's disease

The association between implicit and explicit affective inhibitory control, rumination and depressive symptoms.

Inhibitory control underlies one's ability to maintain goal-directed behavior by inhibiting prepotent responses or ignoring irrelevant information. Recent models suggest that impaired inhibition of negative information may contribute to depressive symptoms, and that this association is mediated by rumination. However, the exact nature of this association, particularly in non-clinical samples, is unclear. The current study assessed the relationship between inhibitory control over emotional vs. non-emotional information, rumination and depressive symptoms. A non-clinical sample of 119 participan

Predictors of stress generation in Turkish young adults: The role of rumination and excessive reassurance seeking.

The stress generation model posits that not only stressful life-events predict depressive symptoms, but also depressive-prone individuals think and behave in ways that make them more vulnerable to experience life-stress. Evidence has supported the bi-directional relationship between stress and depressive symptoms, and there has been an attempt in identifying vulnerability factors for stress generation. Yet, there is a need for studies focusing on multiple risk factors and a replication of findings in non-Western samples. The aim of the present study was to examine the role of rumination and ex

The role of ambulatory 24-hour esophageal manometry in clinical practice.

High-resolution manometry revolutionized the assessment of esophageal motility disorders and upgraded the classification through the Chicago Classification. A known disadvantage of standard HRM, however, is the inability to record esophageal motility function for an extended time interval; therefore, it represents only a more snapshot view of esophageal motor function. In contrast, ambulatory esophageal manometry measures esophageal motility over a prolonged period and detects motor activity during the entire circadian cycle. Furthermore, ambulatory manometry has the ability to measure tempora

Does repetitive negative thinking affect attention? Differential effects of worry and rumination on attention to emotional stimuli.

Worry and rumination, two cardinal responses to emotional events, are key for maintaining negative emotion and have been implicated in the etiology and maintenance of anxiety and depressive disorders. Though worry and rumination are highly correlated with one another and people who engage in one often engage in both, they may differentially affect emotion. Specifically, previous work suggests that worry helps people avoid (intense) emotion, while rumination provokes it. Examining the ways in which these two forms of repetitive negative thinking (RNT) influence cognitive processing of emotional

Brainstem and Cranial Nerve Disorders of Ruminants.

Asymmetrical signs of brainstem disease occur relatively infrequently in ruminants. The most common differential diagnoses include listeriosis, otitis media/interna, and pituitary abscess syndrome. Although these conditions produce signs of brainstem dysfunction, the diseases can usually be differentiated based on historical findings and subtle clinical differences. Basic laboratory diagnostic tests are often not specific in the definitive diagnosis but may be supportive. Advanced imaging techniques have proven to be useful in the diagnosis of otitis media/interna. Presumptive clinical diagnos

Uptake of bloodborne bacteria by pulmonary intravascular macrophages and consequent inflammatory responses in sheep.

Bacteria are primarily removed from the bloodstream of most species by mononuclear phagocytic cells in the liver and spleen. We have recently described large numbers of pulmonary intravascular macrophages in several ruminant species that also remove inert particles from the bloodstream. To determine the role of these cells in removal of bacteria from the bloodstream, sheep and rats were injected intravenously with a single dose of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and kinetics of clearance, relative uptake among organs, and morphologic changes in the lungs and liver 1 h after injection were compared.
