Assessment of technology access and preference for health education of a rural Hispanic community.

In the United States, Hispanic populations tend to have higher incidences of chronic disease such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, obesity and hyperlipidemias [1]. They are also more likely to be underinsured or uninsured than other populations [2]. The purpose of this descriptive technology assessment survey study was to determine computer and internet access, skill level and health education information preferences of a rural Hispanic (primarily Mexican-American) population in the United States. Among the sample, 81% of individuals who answered the survey had a computer and

Antibiotic prescriptions in primary health care in a rural population in Crete, Greece.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic over-prescribing has generally been considered to be common in Greece, however not much is known about current antibiotic use. FINDINGS: The aim of this study was to investigate antibiotic prescribing in a well-defined rural population of 159 adults and 99 children over a 12-month period in Crete, Greece. The daily-defined doses (DDD) for 1000 people/day (DID) were 22.1 and 24.2 for children and adults respectively. The overall DID was 23.4, markedly lower than that previously reported for Greece. The use of penicillins was 49.5% of DDD in children and 31.7% in adults.

Survival and health status of DOTS tuberculosis patients in rural Lao PDR.

BACKGROUND: Contact tracing of tuberculosis (TB) patients is rarely performed in low-income countries. Our objective was to assess the outcome of and compliance with directly observed treatment (DOTS) of TB patients over a 3 year period in rural Lao PDR. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study in which we enrolled TB patients who started DOTS treatment at Attapeu Provincial Hospital. We traced, through hospital records, all patients in their residential village. We conducted a standardized questionnaire with all TB patients and performed physical and anthropometric examinations as

Breastfeeding practices and health-seeking behavior for neonatal sickness in a rural community.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the knowledge of mothers and grandmothers regarding breastfeeding and health-seeking behavior for neonatal sickness in a rural community. A cross-sectional survey, using a triangulation of qualitative (focus group discussion) and quantitative (structured questionnaire) methods was carried out. Although most of the grandmothers and mothers believed in early feeding within 2 h of delivery, they often administered prelacteal feeds such as ghutti and honey. Colostrum was considered beneficial. Most respondents believed that ghutti, water, or both should be give

Diagnostic and prescribing practices in peripheral health facilities in rural western Kenya.

Health facility ledgers of 11 rural health facilities in western Kenya were reviewed to evaluate diagnostic and prescribing practices. Clinics lacked laboratory facilities. Of 14,267 sick child visits (SCVs), 76% were diagnosed with malaria and/or upper respiratory infections. Other diagnoses were recorded in less than 5% of SCVs. Although two-thirds of malaria cases were diagnosed with co-infections, less than 3% were concomitantly diagnosed with anemia. Chloroquine and penicillin constituted 94% of prescriptions. Half of children given a sole diagnosis of measles or pneumonia were prescribed…

Food security and perceptions of health status: a preliminary study in rural Appalachia.

Food insecurity is estimated to affect about 10% of the United States population. Rural areas experience even higher rates and intensity of food security problems related to poverty, food access, and higher food costs. Reports of the relationship between household food security and health status, however, are limited. This report examines the relationship between household food security and measures of functional health status in a rural Appalachian sample. A comprehensive health status survey was completed by 1,006 individuals seen either in a clinical (n = 605) or nonclinical (n = 401) commu

Reduction of mortality in rural Haiti through a primary-health-care program.

Deaths and their causes in a rural Haitian population of 8820 were studied through hospital records, death registration, a disease survey, and health surveillance. The results were used in selecting eight diseases for the delivery of health services by village-level health workers. The impact of the services was measured by monitoring annual age-specific and disease-specific mortality rates and by comparing them with officially estimated national mortality rates. Mortality rates fell progressively during five years, to levels only one fourth as high as the national estimates. The fall in morta

Effects of prenatal antibiotic treatment on early infant health: a retrospective study in a rural health facility in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Infant mortality remains a major developmental challenge in many low-income countries. Epidemiological evidence suggests that infant acquisition of maternal microbiome is essential for programming of immunity and metabolism. As such, irrational maternal antibiotic use may affect infant health. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to determine the effects of prenatal antibiotic use on early postnatal life (90 days) in a low-income community in Ghana. METHODOLOGY: The study was a retrospective study of 412 mother-baby pair medical records in a low-income community in rural Ghana.

Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD): Implications for health and nutritional issues among rural children in China.

In China, with fast economic growth, health and nutrition status among the rural population has shown significant improvement in the past decades. On the other hand, burden of non-communicable diseases and prevalence of related risk factors such as overweight and obesity has also increased. Among rural children, the double burden of malnutrition and emerging overweight and obesity has been neglected so far. According to the theory of Developmental Origin of Health and Diseases (DOHaD), malnutrition, including both undernutrition (stunting and wasting) and over-nutrition (overweight and obesity

Social relationships and health: the meaning of social "connectedness" and how it relates to health concerns for rural Scottish adolescents.

Adolescence has been posited as an important period for the onset of mental health problems and for the need to adapt successfully to many psychosocial changes. The assumption has been made that social belonging is both a health-related goal and an antidote for other sorts of emotional crises, but there is little research on how normal adolescents themselves view connections between social relationships and their physical and mental health. This qualitative study examines how social connectedness represents both a content and process variable in northern Scottish young people's discussion of t

The Meaning of Community Characteristics in the Recruitment and Retention of Rural Health Care Professionals.

INTRODUCTION: Rural communities face shortages of health care professionals, leading to reduced access to care and increased patient mortality. While prior studies have identified factors that positively influence recruitment and retention, limited research has examined how community characteristics shape these experiences. Authors of this study aimed to better understand the role of community characteristics in recruiting and retaining rural health care professionals in Kansas. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with physicians, advanced practice providers (APPs), and nurses working…

Sociodemographic and health determinants of handgrip strength in adults living in rural Ecuador.

Handgrip strength (HGS) is a key indicator of health. However, it remains understudied in low-income rural populations in Ecuadori. To analyze the associations between sociodemographic and health conditions and HGS in adults aged 55 years and older living in rural areas of Ecuador. This cross-sectional study included 258 participants aged 55 years or older. Univariate and multivariate linear regression models were used to examine the associations between HGS and sociodemographic variables, as well as health and physical function indicators. Ecuadorians mean HGS of the sample (n = 258) was 24.0

Economic and health impacts of bovine and zoonotic tuberculosis on rural Zambian communities.

Bovine tuberculosis is a persistent and significant challenge for cattle farmers in Zambia, especially among rural farmers. As livestock farming constitutes a crucial component of the country's agricultural economy, the prevalence of bTB threatens not only animal health and productivity but also poses serious risks to human health, food safety, and economic stability within rural communities. A mixed-methods study was conducted in Lundazi and Monze districts of Zambia between December 2021 and June 2022, combining a cross-sectional survey of 280 respondents with qualitative insights from five
