Development and validation of prediction models for hypertension risks in rural Chinese populations.

BACKGROUND: Various hypertension predictive models have been developed worldwide; however, there is no existing predictive model for hypertension among Chinese rural populations. METHODS: This is a 6-year population-based prospective cohort in rural areas of China. Data was collected in 2007-2008 (baseline survey) and 2013-2014 (follow-up survey) from 8319 participants ranging in age from 35 to 74 years old. Specified gender hypertension predictive models were established based on multivariate Cox regression, Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Naive Bayes Classifier (NBC), and Classification an…

The association between HIV infection and pulmonary function in a rural African population.

OBJECTIVES: HIV infection has been associated with an impaired lung function in high-income countries, but the association between HIV infection and pulmonary function in Sub-Saharan Africa remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the relation between HIV infection and pulmonary function in a rural African population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among HIV-positive and HIV-negative adults in a rural area in South Africa, as part of the Ndlovu Cohort Study. A respiratory questionnaire and post-bronchodilator spirometry were performed. Multivariable regression analysis

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Health in Adulthood in a Rural Population-Based Sample.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including emotional abuse, substance abuse in the household, separation or divorce, physical abuse, violence between adults, mental illness in the household, sexual abuse, or incarceration of a household member, have the potential to profoundly impact health and well-being in adulthood. To assess whether previously reported relationships between ACEs and health outcomes withstand validation, we conducted a community-based ACE study with the unique capacity to link self-reported ACEs and other survey results to validated health data in an electr

The impact of Xpert(®) MTB/RIF in sparsely populated rural settings.

BACKGROUND: The impact of implementing Xpert(®) MTB/RIF and the choice of instrument placement on patient care in sparsely populated areas with poor access to laboratory and radiology services have not yet been elucidated. METHODS: Prospective evaluation of three diagnostic approaches in the Central Karoo, South Africa: smear microscopy as the initial diagnostic, with sputum processing at centralised laboratories, and Xpert as the initial diagnostic with instrument placement at facility level or centralised laboratory. RESULTS: Of 1449 individuals, 196 were diagnosed with TB. The proportion

Accessibility and effectiveness of sources of information about HIV/AIDS in a rural population.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the accessibility and effectiveness of different sources of information about human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) in a rural population. METHODS: A total of 152 (58.6% women, 76.2% nonwhite) respondents living in rural southeast Louisiana completed a questionnaire assessing demographics, exposure to information about HIV/AIDS, and prevalence of HIV-related risk and protective behaviors. Differences by number and type of information sources accessed in prevalence of these behaviors were assessed using regression and multivariate a…

Oculocutaneous albinism in a rural community of South Africa: a population genetic study.

Oculocutaneous albinism type II (OCA2), the most common form of albinism worldwide, is prevalent throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The hypopigmentory phenotype distinguishes affected individuals as 'different' in a black population, resulting in problems of social acceptance and integration. Health issues include constant, lifelong sun-induced skin damage and poor vision. This study determined the frequency and distribution of albinism among the Vhavenda ethnic group living in the relatively low-income north of South Africa in a clan-oriented society. A retrospective study of birth records from r

An epidemiological study of Taenia solium cysticercosis in a rural population in the Bolivian Chaco.

A survey of 100 rural households in a village in the Chaco region of Bolivia revealed a serious problem of Taenia solium cysticercosis, with a seroprevalence of 99/447 (22%) in humans and 102/273 (37%) in pigs. Risk factors for humans were being in older age groups, absence of sanitary facilities, poor formal education and inability to recognise infected pork. Significant risk indicators were a history of seizures and the reported elimination of worms in the faeces. Risk factors for pigs were being in older age groups and absence of sanitary facilities in the owner's house. The proportion of h

Effects of hormonal contraceptives on the periodontium, in a population of rural Sri-Lankan women.

AIMS: Women using hormonal contraceptives can be considered to be a 'risk group' for periodontal disease, due to prolonged, sustained serum levels of oestrogens and progesterone. This investigation aims to study the effects of hormonal contraceptives on periodontal tissues. METHODS: 32 women using hormonal contraceptives for less than 2 years, 17 for 2-4 years and a matched control group of 39 non-users were selected for the study. They were clinically examined for plaque levels (plaque index: PLI), gingival condition (gingival index: GI) and loss of periodontal attachment (LA). RESULTS: Con

[Antibodies against Trichinella spiralis in the rural population of the Province of Cordillera, Bolivia].

A seroepidemiological study was conducted to determine the prevalence of antibodies to Trichinella spiralis among rural residents of Cordillera province, Santa Cruz Department, Bolivia. Using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), 234 serum samples were examined, and antibodies were detected in seven of the samples (3%). The results document for the first time the presence of human infestation with Trichinella in Bolivia and suggest the need to strengthen trichinelosis surveillance in the municipal slaughterhouses, to prevent the clandestine slaughter of animals, and particularly to en

A population-based survey was carried out during 1994-1995 in seven rural and non-industrialised villages around RaipurRani block in the state of Haryana, India, to determine the prevalence of hypertension and its associated risk factors. A total of 2559 individuals (86% of the eligible population) in the 16 to 70-year age group were interviewed using a pre-tested structured questionnaire to find out the lifestyle characteristics. Three blood pressure (BP) readings were recorded with a random z
