Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) are prevalent and can result in significant debilitation. Current diagnostic methods have implicit limitations, with clinical assessment tools reliant on subjective self-reported symptoms or non-specific clinical observations, and commonly available imaging techniques lacking sufficient sensitivity to detect mTBI. A blood biomarker would provide a readily accessible detector of mTBI to meet the current measurement gap. Suitable options would provide objective and quantifiable information in diagnosing mTBI, in monitoring recovery, and in establishing a prog

The utility of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteins such as 14-3-3, tau protein and S-100b as diagnostic markers in the early stages of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) is unclear. We examined the diagnostic value of these CSF proteins in the early stages of sCJD (within 6 weeks of onset of symptoms). Four groups of patients were compared: patients with probable or neuropathologically confirmed sCJD with CSF taken within 6 weeks of onset ('sCJD<6-week group', n=47); patients with CSF taken within 6 weeks of disease onset but with a diagnosis other than CJD ('non-sCJD<6-week group', n=21

Because the pulp tissue extirpated during root canal procedures might serve as a valuable resource with which to assess underlying mechanisms of persistent pain, we sought to determine whether standard Western blotting techniques could be used to quantify neural proteins in pulp extirpated from teeth with irreversible pulpitis. Pulp harvested from healthy intact teeth extracted for orthodontic reasons was used for comparison. The neural marker PGP9.5 was detectable in all samples tested. A membrane enrichment protocol enabled detection of even low abundance, high molecular weight proteins such

BACKGROUND: S100B is a calcium-binding protein expressed and secreted by astrocytes; serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) S100B elevation has been proposed as an index of brain damage. However, other tissues are shown to produce this protein and the clinical significance of serum S100B elevation has been discussed.
METHODS: We investigated the levels of serum and CSF S100B in fasting Wistar rats. Animals were divided into two groups, control and fasting for 48 h, and S100B levels in serum and CSF were determined by ELISA. S100B secretion in dissociated epididymal fat cells was investigated in

This study aimed at the investigation of release patterns of neuron specific enolase (NSE) and protein S-100B after traumatic brain injury (TBI) and their association with intracranial pathologic changes as demonstrated in computerized tomography (CT). We analyzed NSE and S-100B concentrations in serial venous blood samples taken one to three days after TBI in 66 patients by the use of immunoluminometric assays. These markers are considered to be specific neurobiochemical indicators of damage to glial (S-100B) or neuronal (NSE) brain tissue. Standardized neurological examination and plani- and

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy and intraventricular-cerebral hemorrhage is a common complication irreversible in preterm infants. Inflammation leads to an increase in intracellular calcium, acidosis, and oxygen usage, and finally, may damage brain cells. Increases in HIF-1a and HVCN1 can reduce the complications of oxygen consumption and acidosis in infants with intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). On the other hand, decreases in S100B can shield nerve cells from apoptosis and epilepsy by reducing brain damage.
OBJECTIVE: In this research, we investigated how miR-138-siRNAs-HIF-1a and miR-21- siRNAs-HVCN

The prospective study of plasma S100β protein levels in 19 patients with mild traumamic brain injury treated with conservative methods was carried out. The S100β protein levels were measured on the admission of the patient and after 24 and 48 h. The level of S100β increased above normal values (>0,105 mkg/l) in 11 patients (58%) in the first 6 h after the trauma. The CT analysis revealed brain matter lesions in 8 patients (42%), MRI - in 11 (58%) cases. The increase of baseline S100β levels above normal values was found in all patients with brain matter lesions seen in CT and in 27% of patient

The pathogenesis of sepsis associated encephalopathy (SAE) is not yet clear: the blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption has been indicated among the possible causative mechanisms. S100B, a calcium binding protein, originates in the central nervous system but it can be also produced by extra-cerebral sources; it is passively released from damaged glial cells and neurons; it has limited passage through the BBB. We aimed to demonstrate BBB damage as part of the pathogenesis of SAE by cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) and serum S100B measurements and by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This paper describ

Biochemical markers have played an increasingly relevant role in the assessment of neonatal asphyxia. The S100B protein is particularly important in research conducted in this field. The purpose of this study was to underline the importance of the S100B protein in the assessment of term newborn infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, as well as to relate it to other substances also involved in the ischemic process. An assessment was made from September 2003 to October 2004 of 21 term newborn infants who developed hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Samples were collected on the 1st and 4th

BACKGROUND: S100B is an acknowledged marker of brain damage. However, trauma without brain damage also causes an increase in S100B. S100B concentrations are highest in multiple trauma patients with long bone fractures. Clinically, extensive long bone fractures are associated with haemorrhagic shock and haemorrhagic shock per se is associated with increased S100B. The aim of our experimental study was to verify the S100B increase in long bone fracture without haemorrhagic shock.
METHODS: and results. Bilateral femur fracture was carried out in 10 anaesthetized rats. Blood samples were drawn fo

Enteric glia are a unique population of peripheral neuroglia associated with the enteric nervous system (ENS) throughout the digestive tract. The emerging data from the latest glial biology studies unveiled enteric glia as a heterogenic population with plastic and adaptative abilities that display phenotypic and functional changes upon distinct extrinsic cues. This aspect is essential in the dynamic signaling that enteric glia engage with neurons and other neighboring cells within the intestinal wall, such as epithelial, endocrine, and immune cells to maintain local homeostasis. Likewise, ente

Early S100B protein serum elevation is associated with poor prognosis in patients with ruptured brain arteriovenous malformations (BAVM). The purpose of this study is to determine whether a secondary elevation of S100B is associated with early complications or poor outcome in this population. This is a retrospective study of patients admitted for BAVM rupture. A secondary increase of S100B was defined as an absolute increase by 0.1 μg/L within 30 days of admission. Fisher's and unpaired t tests followed by multivariate analysis were performed to identify markers associated with this increase.

BACKGROUND: Diverticular disease (DD) is a common gastrointestinal inflammatory disorder associated with an enteric neuropathy. Although enteric glial cells (EGCs) are essential regulators of intestinal inflammation and motility functions, their contribution to the pathophysiology of DD remains unclear. Therefore, we analyzed the expression of specific EGC markers in patients with DD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Expression of the glial markers S100β, GFAP, Sox10, and Connexin 43 was analyzed by real-time quantitative PCR in colonic specimens of patients with DD and in that of controls. Protein exp

The clinical significance of serum S-100β levels in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), as a reference index to assess HIE severity, was evaluated in this study. On the basis of our strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, relevant high-quality case-control studies reporting the association between HIE and S-100β protein were selected from electronic database searches. The STATA version 12.0 software was used for the statistical analyses. The database search initially retrieved 93 studies (37 in English and 56 in Chinese), and following a multistep screening process, 13 high-q

Malignant melanoma is responsible for most skin cancer-related deaths due to its unpredictable behavior. Serum biomarkers have been widely investigated to improve prognostic assessment, yet their clinical utility remains inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the prognostic significance of serum biomarkers in melanoma. Following PRISMA guidelines and a registered protocol (PROSPERO: CRD42023486532), PubMed, EMBASE, and CENTRAL were searched for studies assessing biomarkers and survival outcomes. Univariate analyses revealed that elevated levels of LDH (HR 2.29, 95%-CI

BACKGROUND: Ultra-early detection of brain injury biomarkers within the critical first hour post-injury remains a major clinical challenge in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) management. Conventional platforms (e.g., ELISA) suffer from limited sensitivity, prolonged turnaround times, and narrow dynamic range, hindering timely diagnosis.
METHODS: We developed an integrated nanophotonic biosensor and deep learning platform for ultrasensitive S100B quantification. The biosensor employs capillary-assembled heterochain arrays of 500-nm polystyrene and 250-nm selenium nanoparticles, enabling red-
