Stage-specific microbial dynamics and transmission pathways in salted seafood processing plants: A comparison of salted pollock roe and salted squid.

This study investigated microbial transmission dynamics and community structures across processing stages of two salted seafood products: salted pollock roe and salted squid. Samples of raw materials, environmental samples, and final products were collected from two processing plants (n = 87), and both culture-based analyses and 16S rRNA gene sequencing were performed. SourceTracker was used to track potential sources contributing to the final products. Microbial dynamics exhibited contrasting patterns between the two products due to differences in salting intensity and processing methods. In

High salt differentially regulates surface NKCC2 expression in thick ascending limbs of Dahl salt-sensitive and salt-resistant rats.

NaCl reabsorption by the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle (THAL) occurs via the apical Na-K-2Cl cotransporter, NKCC2. Overall, NKCC2 activity and NaCl reabsorption are regulated by the amount of NKCC2 at the apical surface, and also by phosphorylation. Dahl salt-sensitive rats (SS) exhibit higher NaCl reabsorption by the THAL compared with Dahl salt-resistant rats (SR), and they become hypertensive during high-salt (HS) intake. However, the effect of HS on THAL transport, surface NKCC2 expression, and NKCC2 NH(2)-terminus phosphorylation has not been studied. We hypothesized that HS e

Peptidylarginine deiminase 4 is a differential regulator of salt-sensitive and salt-resistant hypertension.

Neutrophils contribute to immune surveillance by releasing neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) through NETosis. While essential, dysregulated NETosis is linked to pathology. We examined its role in salt-sensitive versus salt-resistant hypertension using Dahl rat models. Hypertensive Dahl S rats, but not normotensive Dahl R rats, showed increased NETosis, higher neutrophil counts, and chronic low-grade inflammation. Inhibiting NETosis with DNase I or by the genetic deletion of peptidyl arginine deiminase (Pad4) exacerbated blood pressure (BP) in S rats, suggesting NETosis protects against sal

World Salt Awareness Week: A call to action for reducing salt intake in Malaysia.

Cardiovascular diseases remain a primary contributor to death worldwide, with hypertension being a key determinant. Excessive salt intake is a contributing factor of high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases. To address this, the World Health Organization recommends keeping daily salt consumption under 5 g and aiming for a 30% decrease by 2025. In Malaysia, efforts to reach this target have faced delays. A local study found that 79% of Malaysians consume an average of 7.9 g of salt per day, which is significantly higher than the WHO's recommendations. Despite efforts such as voluntary fo

Genetic variation in salt taste receptors impact salt intake and blood pressure.

So far, few studies have examined the effect of salt taste receptors genetic variation on dietary intake in the Iranian population. We aimed to evaluate associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in salt taste receptors' genes with dietary salt intake and blood pressure. A cross-sectional study was carried out among 116 randomly selected healthy adults aged ≥ 18 in Isfahan, Iran. Participants underwent sodium intake determination by 24-h urine collection, as well as dietary assessment by semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire and blood pressure measurement. Whole blood

Dietary Salt (Sodium Chloride) Requirement and Adverse Effects of Salt Restriction in Humans.

Inevitable sodium loss under sodium restriction must not be construed as evidence for the estimated average requirement (EAR) for sodium (Na) in humans. We conducted human mineral balance studies to determine the EAR for some minerals (Na, K, Ca, Mg, P, Zn, Fe, Cu and Mn). Na concentration in arm sweat was low while those of calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) were high, during relatively heavy bicycle-ergometer exercise under relatively low Na intake (100 mmol/d). This suggests that Na was released from the bone, the sole pool of Na, with Ca and Mg. Additionally, the negative balances of Ca and M

Salt, aldosterone and hypertension.

Clinical studies have shown that aldosterone and salt are independently related to hypertension, cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. More recently, studies in humans have demonstrated that, similarly to animals, endogenous aldosterone and dietary salt intake have not only separate, but also combined effects to accelerate target-organ deterioration. The aldosterone-salt interaction has important clinical implications, because combined effects of both can be minimized, if not avoided, by reducing salt intake. This interaction could also be interrupted by blocking the effects of aldosterone,

Salt handling and hypertension.

The kidney plays a central role in our ability to maintain appropriate sodium balance, which is critical to determination of blood pressure. In this review we outline current knowledge of renal salt handling at the molecular level, and, given that Westernized societies consume more salt than is required for normal physiology, we examine evidence that the lowering of salt intake can combat hypertension.

Two isotypical disodium salts of the antihypertensive agent valsartan.

The crystal structure of disodium valsartan 3.5-hydrate, or poly[hemiheptaaqua[μ-5-{2-[4-({N-[(2S)-1-carboxylato-2-methylpropyl]pentanamido}methyl)phenyl]phenyl}-1H-1,2,3,4-tetrazol-1-ido]disodium], [Na2(C24H27N5O3)(H2O)3.5]n (1), was determined using powder X-ray diffraction data. Recrystallization of this substance from an ethanol-acetonitrile (1:1 v/v) mixture afforded disodium valsartan 2.67-hydrate ethanol 0.33-solvate, [Na2(C24H27N5O3)(C2H5OH)0.33(H2O)2.67]n (2), with partially occupied ethanol and water positions. Evaluation of thermochemical characteristics of salts with pentazenium cation.

CONTEXT: Using quantum-chemical and crystal modeling, the solid-state enthalpies of three hypothetical high-energy salts with the pentazenium cation N5+ were estimated: nitrate NO3-, dinitramide N(NO2)2-, and azide N3-, yielding the cationic contribution of pentazenium. Supplementing the lattice energy mixing method with an additive approach to determining the enthalpies of salts, values are given for salts with the perchlorate anion N5+ClO4-; four salts with the halogen anions N5+I-, N5+Br-, N5+Cl-, and N5+F-; and two experimentally existing structures: pentazenium tetrafluoroborate N5+BF4- a…

The role of bile salts in itch receptor activation.

BACKGROUND: Cholestasis-associated pruritus is a distressing symptom. Bile salts and bilirubin are often implicated in the etiology of pruritus. We evaluated whether these compounds activate known itch receptors. METHODS: Activation of the established pruriceptors TRPA1, TRPV1, TRPV3, TRPV4, MRGPRX4 in cells overexpressing these receptors, by monitoring cytosolic free Ca2+. TGR5 activation was assayed by means of cAMP ELISA in TGR5 overexpressing cells. Serum from 43 cholestatic patients and 15 controls was analyzed for receptor activation; plasma bile salt concentrations were quantified by H…

Torsemide Crystalline Salts with a Significant Spring-Parachute Effect.

Torsemide is a long acting pyridine sulfonylurea diuretic. Torsemide hydrochloride is widely used now, there are only a few organic acid salts reported. Cocrystallization with organic acids is an effective way to improve its solubility. Here, we reported maleate and phthalate of torsemide, in which the organic acid lost a proton transferring to the pyridine of torsemide, and torsemide interacted with organic acid through N+ - H⋯O- hydrogen bond to form salts crystal. Surprisingly, maleate showed a clear "spring" pattern in apparent solubility, whereas phthalate had a "spring-parachute" effect.…
