OBJECTIVE: To develop a nonpenetrating scalp electrode for intrapartum fetal monitoring. DESIGN: Preliminary observational evaluation of the device. SETTING: An urban academic hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa. SUBJECTS: Fifteen women in labour. INTERVENTION: Application of the electrode for intrapartum monitoring. Scalp changes after fetal monitoring.

We prospectively studied 535 newborn infants who had been monitored during labour with scalp electrodes. Daily examination of scalp changes showed frequent transient mild lacerations, while severe complications were rare: seven (1.3%) had scalp ulceration and one (0.2%) developed scalp abscess.

Scaling scalp diseases in children.

Scaling scalp diseases in 142 children were evaluated. Included were seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, tinea capitis, and psoriasis. Clinical signs were noted, and various treatments were then undertaken. Patients with seborrheic dermatitis responded well to treatment with antiseborrheic shampoo and topical corticosteroids. Atopic disease was more resistant to treatment, but did improve with less frequent shampooing and twice daily topical corticosteroid application. Selenium shampoo was a useful adjunct in the treatment of tinea capitis (cultures became negative at two weeks compared …

Scalp Infection, Inflammation, and Infestation.

Tinea capitis, folliculitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and pediculosis capitis are four common scalp conditions. Although tinea capitis and seborrheic dermatitis are found more commonly in patients with skin of color and highly textured hair, all of these conditions have special diagnostic or management considerations in these populations. This article reviews the diagnosis and management of these common scalp conditions.

Scalp Micropigmentation: A Clinicopathologic Correlation.

INTRODUCTION: Scalp micropigmentation is a method of concealing alopecia by depositing permanent pigment in a tattoo-like manner. Pigment is deposited between hair follicles in a stippling pattern that resembles closely cut hair. CASE PRESENTATION: On trichoscopy, characteristic findings of scalp micropigmentation include homogenous, grey to black circular dots that are evenly spaced and appear larger than adjacent hair follicles. Findings were correlated with histopathology. CONCLUSION: Trichoscopy is a useful tool to visualize scalp micropigmentation in place of invasive procedures.

Numerous large nodules on scalp.

The patient told us that his father had "cysts" on his body, too. This familial connection provided a clue to the diagnosis.

Scalp Rosacea: Rethinking Peripilar Scaling.

INTRODUCTION: Scalp rosacea is scarcely reported in the literature, but it is probably not uncommon. Trichoscopic findings have not been specifically established for this entity. CASE PRESENTATION: We report 4 cases of chronic scalp rosacea with trichoscopic evidence of peripilar scaling that resolved without scarring after treatment. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Chronic and persistent inflammation around the isthmus produced in scalp rosacea may form peripilar scaling resembling that found in lichen planopilaris.

Scalp Metastasis of Anaplastic Oligodendroglioma.

BACKGROUND: Scalp metastases from anaplastic oligodendroglioma (AO) are extremely rare and mostly involve intracranial recurrence or widely metastatic disease. Here we describe an exceptional case of histopathologically proven scalp metastasis of AO 6 years after surgical resection and postoperative adjuvant radiation. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 42-year-old woman presented with several months of progressive headache and dizziness. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed an irregular enhancing lesion in the left frontal lobe extending to the ependymal surface. Left frontal craniotomy was…

Scalp porocarcinoma and lichen planopilaris.

Porocarcinoma (PC) is a malignant neoplasm arising from the intraepidermal ductal portion of the sweat gland duct. Lichen planopilaris (LPP) … opsy of the nodule revealed an infiltrating tumor consistent with the diagnosis of PC. We present a scalp PC emerging in a background of LPP in an HIV patient. We do not know the role, if any, HIV infection and LPP played in this particular case. Immunosuppression and HIV have been implicated in the etiology of PC. However, her HIV diagnosis was made af …

Scalp Itch: A Systematic Review.

Scalp itch is a frequent complaint in the dermatological setting. It is common for the dermatologist to encounter patients with no evident cause of scalp pruritus, making it a distressing situation for both the clinician and the patient. The aim of this paper is to propose a systematic approach to scalp itch, which classifies scalp pruritus into two types: (1) with or (2) without dermatological lesions, and presence or absence of hair loss. Also, it is important to think first about the most common causes and then rule out other, less common etiologies. The acronym SCALLP and the five steps fo…

Lipedematous scalp: a rare entity.

Lipedematous scalp is characterized by increased subcutaneous thickness of the scalp without any hair change. A 50-year-old female presented with thickening of the scalp without alopecia. She had no disorder other than hypertension. Monthly sonographic measurements without any treatment showed a resolution tendency in some areas and an increased thickness in others. We discuss the characteristics of this rare and possibly underestimated entity, including differential diagnoses.
