Venom of the Scorpion Vejovis spinigerus.

The chemical composition of lyophilized venom from Vejovis spinigerus is reported. At least 13 distinct bands were obtained on disc electrophoresis; on Sephadex G-50, four major peaks were found. The lethal activity was associated with the second peak. The intravenous lethal dose, median (lethal for 50 percent of inoculated group), of the crude venom was 4.87 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. Neither the crude venom nor its fractions had a deleterious effect on neuromuscular transmission, reflex discharge, or antidromic inhibition. Crude venom evoked simultaneous changes in systemic arte

Linking toxicity and predation in a venomous arthropod: the case of Tityus fuhrmanni (Scorpiones: Buthidae), a generalist predator scorpion.

BACKGROUND: Scorpions are arachnids that have a generalist diet, which use venom to subdue their prey. The study of their trophic ecology and capture behavior is still limited compared to other organisms, and aspects such as trophic specialization in this group have been little explored. METHODS: In order to determine the relationship between feeding behavior and venom toxicity in the scorpion species Tityus fuhrmanni, 33 specimens were offered prey with different morphologies and defense mechanisms: spiders, cockroaches and crickets. In each of the experiments we recorded the following aspec…

The diversity of venom components of the scorpion species Paravaejovis schwenkmeyeri (Scorpiones: Vaejovidae) revealed by transcriptome and proteome analyses.

The recent publication of high-throughput transcriptomic and proteomic analyses of scorpion venom glands has increased our knowledge on the … e increases our general knowledge on the biodiversity of venom components from neglected non-buthid scorpions.

Anti-scorpion venom activity of Andrographis paniculata: A combined and comparative study with anti-scorpion serum in mice.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to evaluate the anti-scorpion venom (ASV) property of Andrographis paniculata in comparison with anti-redscorpion venom serum and this study aimed to determine its combined effect with anti-redscorpion venom serum. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ethanolic extract of the plant AP was obtained using soxhlet apparatus. Swiss albino mice weighing 20-30g were used. Lyophilized venom sample of Mesobuthus tamulus and Lyophilized monovalent enzyme refined immunoglobulin anti-scorpion venom serum (ASV) was used. Using lethal dose of scorpion venom (25.12μg/g), the ve

Direct vs. mediated effects of scorpion venom: an experimental study of the effects of a second challenge with scorpion venom.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the respective roles of venom and of catecholamines following scorpion envenomation and to verify whether a second challenge with scorpion venom induces the same consequences than a first one. DESIGN AND SETTING: Controlled animal study in a university research laboratory. SUBJECTS: Anesthetized and ventilated dogs. INTERVENTIONS: Fifteen dogs received intravenously a sublethal dose of scorpion venom (0.05 mg/kg). In the reenvenomated group (n=5) a second venom challenge with one-half sublethal venom dose was performed 30 min after the first one. The control group (n=10

Second Dose of Scorpion Antivenom in Children with Indian Red Scorpion (Mesobuthus tamulus) Sting Envenomation.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of the second dose of scorpion antivenom in children with non-resolving or worsening scorpion sting envenomation. METHODS: 72 children aged ≤12 years with scorpion sting envenomation grade 2 and above were enrolled. 61 received the first dose of three vials of antivenom at admission (group A). Children with persistent/worsening envenomation at 6 hours received the second dose (group B). The time required for resolution of autonomic symptoms, myocardial dysfunction, predictors of the second dose and side effects were studied. RESULTS: The mean time taken for res

Serum level of scorpion toxins, electrolytes and electrocardiogram alterations in Mexican children envenomed by scorpion sting.

The scorpion Centruroides limpidus limpidus (C.l.l.) is endemic in México, producing hundreds of accidents in humans; children being one of the most susceptible targets. Few studies reported that severe envenoming by scorpion venom induces cardiac damage and electrolytes abnormalities in children, but the relationship of envenoming severity and toxic blood levels is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship among clinical status of envenoming, serum electrolyte, electrocardiographic abnormalities, and serum toxin levels in 44 children stung by scorpion over a period of 6

Envenomation by the scorpion (Centruroides limbatus) outside its natural range and recognition of medically important scorpions.

A 67-year-old woman presented to a community emergency department in Orange County, CA, after she was stung by a scorpion identified as Centruroides limbatus from Central America. She developed local pain and systemic symptoms, including parasthesias, flushing, hypertension, and wheezing. Envenomation by this genus of scorpion has not previously been reported in Orange County. Scorpions have been reported to be accidentally transported to areas where they are not indigenous, and patients may present anywhere with envenomation by dangerous scorpion species. Physicians should recognize general i…

Preparation of a potent anti-scorpion-venom-serum against the venom of red scorpion (Buthus tamalus).

A number of children and adults, especially pregnant women succumb to the sting by red Scorpion (Buthus tamalus) in Konkan region--particularly on the coastal line. No specific antiserum or any other antidote is available to treat a victim of scorpion bite and hence the need to prepare a potent antiserum. Red Scorpion (B. tamalus) venom is a mixture of a number of protein moieties and neurotoxins of low molecular weight. Therefore, the venom is poor in antigenic composition and it is difficult to get antibodies specific to neutralise lethal factor/factors. Using Bentonite as an adjuvant and ex

Clinical outcomes in a murine model after envenoming by the Amazonian scorpions Tityus strandi and Tityus dinizi.

The Brazilian Amazon is home to a rich fauna of scorpion species of medical importance, some of them still poorly characterized regarding their biological actions and range of clinical symptoms after envenoming. The Amazonian scorpion species Tityus strandi and Tityus dinizi constitute some of the scorpions in this group, with few studies in the literature regarding their systemic repercussions. In the present study, we characterized the clinical, inflammatory, and histopathological manifestations of T. strandi and T. dinizi envenoming in a murine model using Balb/c mice. The results show a ro…

Processed Buthus martensii Karsch scorpions ameliorate diet-induced NASH in mice by attenuating Kv1.3-mediated macrophage activation.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Processed Buthus martensii Karsch (BmK) scorpion, also known as Quan-Xie, is a traditional Chinese medicine that is clinically used for the treatment of NAFLD due to its Tong-Luo-San-Jie effects. Our previous study showed that aqueous extract of processed BmK scorpion venom gland (pVg AE) inhibited macrophage inflammation by targeting Kv1.3 and identified the thermostable peptide BmKK2 as a potent Kv1.3 blocker. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study examined the therapeutic effects of processed BmK scorpions on NASH, specifically focusing on the involvement of their ant…
