The diet supplemented with raw and hydrolyzed Microchloropsis gaditana and Arthrospira platensis blend modulates intestinal microbiota and metabolomic profiles in Sparus aurata.

The transition toward sustainable aquaculture has prompted the search for alternative feed ingredients that support fish health while reducing dependence on fishmeal. Microalgae such as Microchloropsis gaditana and Arthrospira platensis are rich in bioactive compounds with potential functional benefits. This study evaluated the effects of supplementing gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) diets with a 10% blend of raw or enzymatically hydrolyzed M. gaditana and A. platensis on intestinal microbiota composition and metabolomic profiles. Over a 41-day feeding trial, fish were fed either a control d

Infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus promotes replication organelle formation and sphingolipid biosynthesis to facilitate viral replication.

Infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV) is a highly pathogenic iridovirus that causes severe economic losses in aquaculture. Viruses usually remodel host lipid metabolism to facilitate their replication. However, whether ISKNV modulates host lipid metabolism to support its infection remains unknown. In this study, using lipidomics analysis, we found that ISKNV infection induced widespread upregulation of host lipid profiles, including glycerophospholipids, glycerolipids, and sphingolipids. Transcriptional analysis revealed coordinated regulation of key metabolic enzymes, collective

Impact of sublethal contaminants mixtures on the immune system of Sparus aurata: Implications for marine ecosystem health.

The presence of various contaminants in aquatic environments has raised concerns regarding the potential consequences of mixtures of different agents from diverse origins, including heavy metals, polyfluorinated compounds, polychlorinated biphenyls, polybrominated diphenyl ether, as well as a wide range of pharmaceutical compounds and their byproducts. To assess the relationship between these compounds and their impact on marine organisms, varying concentrations of a blend comprising 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether 47 (BDE-47), carbamazepine (CBZ), and cadmium chloride (CdCl2) were introduc

Dynamic impacts of short-term bath administration of enrofloxacin on juvenile black seabream Acanthopagrus schlegelii.

Dynamic impacts of short-term enrofloxacin (ENR) exposure on juvenile marine fish are not well understood, and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We therefore investigated the accumulation and elimination of ENR in the liver of juvenile black seabream Acanthopagrus schlegelii. Meanwhile, the dynamic alterations of biochemical parameters and liver transcriptomes after short-term bath immersion and withdrawal treatment were explored. The results indicated that the contents of ENR in the liver were significantly increased after bath administration for 24 h, and then quickly declined to ver

Genotoxicity of gold nanoparticles in the gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) after single exposure and combined with the pharmaceutical gemfibrozil.

Due to their diverse applications, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are expected to increase of in the environment, although few studies are available on their mode of action in aquatic organisms. The genotoxicity of AuNPs, alone or combined with the human pharmaceutical gemfibrozil (GEM), an environmental contaminant frequently detected in aquatic systems, including in marine ecosystems, was examined using gilthead seabream erythrocytes as a model system. Fish were exposed for 96 h to 4, 80 and 1600 μg L-1 of 40 nm AuNPs with two coatings - citrate or polyvinylpyrrolidone; GEM (150 μg L-1); and a c

Lympholeukemia in madai Pagrus major in Japan.

Lympholeukemia has been occurring to an epizootic extent with mass mortality in 1 and 2 yr old madai (= Japanese red sea bream) Pagrus major in the winter season (October-May) in the western regions of Japan since 1975. Diseased fish displayed severe anemia and markedly increased numbers of neoplastic lymphocytoid and lymphoblastoid cells in the blood. Neoplastic cells originated in the splenic lymphatic cells and systemically caused severe metastatic lesions in the heart, liver, kidney, digestive tracts, gills and the lateral musculature. Electron microscopy revealed adeno-like viral particle

Anatomy, histology, and morphology of fish gills in relation to feeding habits: a comparative review of marine and freshwater species.

This systematic review highlights the similarities and variations in gill morphology, histology, and anatomical structure between differing fish species. The gill system consists of mainly four pairs of gill arches in most teleost fishes, such as sea bass, sea bream, grouper, and red porgy, etc., while it consists of three pairs of gill arches in pufferfish and striped-red mullet fish. However, Clarias gariepinus had five pairs, including an additional rudimentary fifth-gill arch. The gill structure consisted of gill arches, gill rakers, gill filaments, and secondary lamellae with varied shape

In vitro comparative evaluation of disinfectant-loaded nanoparticles against biofilm-forming Vibrio spp. isolated from gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata).

This study evaluated the in vitro efficacy of antimicrobial and antibiofilm of three disinfectant-loaded nanoparticles (AgNPs-H₂O₂, CuNPs-Virkon S, and CuNPs-TH4) against Vibrio alginolyticus and Vibrio fluvialis, isolated from naturally infected gilthead seabream in Egypt. Qualitative Congo red assay showed that V. fluvialis isolates were strong biofilm producers, whereas V. alginolyticus showed limited phenotypic variation. Quantitative assay results, analyzed with a Mann-Whitney U test, showed no statistically significant difference in overall biofilm biomass between V. alginolyticus and V.

Description of novel myxozoan and microsporidian parasites from cultured red seabream Pagrus major exhibiting mild scoliosis, with additional detection of the myxosporean in yellowback seabream Evynnis tumifrons.

Red seabream Pagrus major (Temminck & Schlegel, 1843) (Teleostei: Sparidae) farmed in Japan exhibited mild scoliosis, and myxosporean and microsporidian parasites were isolated from the brain and medulla oblongata of the diseased fish, respectively. Based on the morphological and molecular analyses, the myxosporean specimens were described as a new species, Myxobolus tai n. sp. (Bivalvulida: Myxobolidae). The spore is oblong to oval in valvular view, with two pyriform polar capsules of slightly unequal size. Polar capsules are asymmetrically positioned relative to the major axis of the spore.

Direct identification of Photobacterium damselae subspecies piscicida by PCR-RFLP analysis.

Fish pasteurellosis is an infectious disease that affects several teleost species living in temperate marine waters. The pathogen responsible, Photobacterium damselae subspecies piscicida, shows high genetic similarity with P. damselae subsp. damselae, making subspecies discrimination extremely laborious. Here we report for the first time a PCR-RFLP method for the identification of P. damselae subsp. piscicida without prior isolation in pure culture. Genomic sequence information was obtained through cloning and sequencing of RAPD products. Two P. damselae-specific primer pairs were developed a

Metals and Metalloids Accumulation and Biomagnification in Three Commercially Important Fishes from a Turkish Brackish Lake.

Metal and metalloid (hereafter simply 'metal') pollution is a growing global concern for both aquatic organisms and human health. Fishes are important in human diet, but they can also accumulate metals in their tissues. Therefore, it is important to monitor the concentration of metals in their muscle, and to investigate potential patterns of bioaccumulation and biomagnification. Here, we studied the bioaccumulation and biomagnification of chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), arsenic (As), and lead (Pb) in three economically important fish species from Dalyan Lake (Türkiye): the grey mullet Mugil cephal

Dynamic immune responses of yellowfin seabream (Acanthopagrus latus) following recurrent challenge with Amyloodinium ocellatum.

Amyloodinium ocellatum is a devastating parasite that affects mariculture worldwide. Currently, no effective vaccine is available against this pathogen. This study investigated the dynamic immune responses of Acanthopagrus latus to recurrent infections with A. ocellatum. Following recurrent sub-lethal challenges, a significant reduction in parasite abundance was observed by the third infection, indicating the development of a protective immune response in the fish. To elucidate the underlying immune mechanisms, the A. latus IgM heavy chain (AlIgM) was cloned and recombinantly expressed for the
