Sexual Self-Concept and Psychological Functioning of Women With a History of Childhood Sexual Abuse in Hong Kong.

Sexual self-concept (SSC) is an important component of health that is closely associated with the well-being of survivors of child sexual abuse (CSA). Compared with non-CSA respondents, SSC of CSA survivors was deleteriously affected, resulting in ineffective psychological functioning (negative self-evaluation, psychological ill-health, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships). Negative SSC (sexual anxiety, sexual depression, and sexual fear) played a significant role in mediating the adverse effects of CSA on psychological functioning. Future studies may recruit a sample with greater

The synergistic effect of poor motor coordination, gender and age on self-concept in children: A longitudinal analysis.

BACKGROUND: Self-concept is a critical psychosocial outcome in childhood that is shaped by many factors. Gender, motor coordination and age have been identified as three important contributors. AIM: The present study examined whether poor motor coordination (i.e., being classified as at risk for Developmental Coordination Disorder [rDCD]), gender and age have a synergistic effect on domains of self-concept and self-worth in children. METHODS: Data were derived from the Physical Health and Activity Study Team longitudinal open cohort project. Children enrolled in grade 4 (Mage = 9.88 ± 0.35)

Changes in Providers' Self-Efficacy and Intentions to Provide Safer Conception Counseling Over 24 Months.

High rates of fertility desires, childbearing and serodiscordant partnerships among people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Uganda underscore the need to promote use of safer conception methods (SCM). Effective SCM exist but few PLHIV benefit from provider-led safer conception counseling (SCC) and comprehensive national SCC guidelines are still lacking. Providers' self-efficacy, intentions and attitudes for SCC impact provision and should inform development of services, but there are no longitudinal studies that assess these important constructs. This study reports on changes in providers' knowledge

Immigrant status and gender effects on psychopathology and self-concept in adolescents: a test of the migration-morbidity hypothesis.

Evidence for a relationship between immigrant status and psychological morbidity (which we shall refer to as the "migration-morbidity" hypothesis) in adolescents is variable and inconclusive. The present study tests this hypothesis and also explores gender differences in self-reported psychopathology and self-concept measures. Native-born Australians, Australian-born adolescent children of immigrants, and immigrant and refugee adolescents are compared on a number of relevant measures. The results do not support the migration-morbidity hypothesis. However, Vietnamese refugee adolescents had poo

Self-Experienced Difficulties in Communicative Participation in Children With Speech, Language and Communication Needs-A Concept Elicitation Study.

BACKGROUND: Communicative participation is the most important outcome of speech and language therapy. A patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) for children would help capture this outcome. Before this PROM can be developed, it is important to find out what situations children themselves find difficult because of their communication problem. AIMS: The aim of the study was to identify relevant aspects of self-reported communicative participation in children with communication disorders. METHOD AND PROCEDURES: Thirteen children (5-12 years old) with speech disorders, developmental language dis

'Joining the Dots Across Time': A Temporal Conceptual Model of Self-Concept Reconstruction Following Late Recognition of Autism.

Late autism recognition can be an interpretive shift, providing language and coherence for long-standing experiences. Using a temporal self-concept lens, we propose a temporal conceptual model of self-concept reconstruction following late recognition and examine how late-recognised autistic adults, many identifying as AuDHD, describe changes in self-understanding across past, present and future selves. Semi-structured online interviews were conducted with 34 Australian adults (autism-only n = 5; AuDHD n = 29; 25-66 years) who reported recognition after age 18 (diagnosed and/or self-identified)

Digital Peer-Supported Self-Management Intervention Codesigned by People With Long COVID: Mixed Methods Proof-of-Concept Study.

BACKGROUND: There are around 1.3 million people in the United Kingdom with the devastating psychological, physical, and cognitive consequences of long COVID (LC). UK guidelines recommend that LC symptoms be managed pragmatically with holistic support for patients' biopsychosocial needs, including psychological, emotional, and physical health. Self-management strategies, such as pacing, prioritization, and goal setting, are vital for the self-management of many LC symptoms. OBJECTIVE: This paper describes the codevelopment and initial testing of a digital intervention combining peer support wi

Mobile Application for Promoting Gluten-Free Diet Self-Management in Adolescents with Celiac Disease: Proof-of-Concept Study.

Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic disease treated by maintaining and managing a lifelong restrictive gluten-free diet. The purpose of this study was to develop a mobile application, Plan My C-Day, to promote self-management skills among youth with CD during adolescence-a time when decreased adherence often occurs-and examine its usability among adolescents with CD. Plan My C-Day contains three simulations of activities involving eating out and actions to take when preparing for these events. It was developed and pilot tested by 13 adolescents with CD. Application use and user perception data we

Dominance as part of self-concept mediates the intergenerational transmission of social anxiety among adolescents under residential care.

According to Rapee (1997), maternal social anxiety (SA) is directly associated with adolescent SA because maternal SA causes overprotective and controlling parental behavior. A total of 127 adolescents who were in the process of transitioning to a boarding school for at-risk youth as well as their mothers participated in the current study, 30% of the adolescents had experienced at least one depressive episode; 17.5% had been diagnosed with SA. We analyzed an expanding model of mediation, of maternal SA and depression in which specifically, adolescent self-perception was constructed as a latent

[Longitudinal moderating effect of depressive symptoms on the predictive relationship between self-concept clarity and meaning in life].

OBJECTIVES: In recent years, the phenomenon of "hollow heart syndrome" has become increasingly prevalent among college students, characterized by persistent inner emptiness, lack of motivation, and a diminished sense of meaning. Even when external achievements are attained, individuals often fail to experience a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. Such students may appear successful outwardly but remain trapped in confusion and meaninglessness, and may even frequently experience suicidal ideation. As a critical stage of psychological development, the college period involves the transition f

Exploring the development of academic self-concept: a qualitative study of student success among Sama Dilaut University graduates.

PURPOSE: Despite the growing recognition of academic self-concept as a critical driver of student success, limited research has examined how high-achieving Indigenous students, particularly those from Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA) communities in the Philippines, develop and sustain a positive academic self-concept in the face of systemic discrimination and socioeconomic disadvantage. Thus, this study explored the development of academic self-concept among Sama Dilaut university graduates and how they navigated the relationship between their cultural identity and their

Self-concept mediates the relationships between childhood traumatic experiences and adolescent depression in both clinical and community samples.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma is a pivotal risk factor for adolescent depression. While the association between childhood trauma and depression is well-established, the mediating role of self-concept has not been acknowledged. Specifically, limited attention has been paid to how childhood maltreatment impacts adolescent depression through physical and social self-concept, both in clinical and community samples. This study aims to investigate how distinct and cumulative childhood trauma affects adolescent depression, as well as the potential mediating role of self-concept in their relationships.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis responds to daylight-activated photodynamic therapy: proof of concept for a novel self-administered therapeutic modality.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is endemic in Israel, with hundreds of new cases reported in recent years. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is highly effective for treatment of CL, but requires equipment available only at specialized centres. Daylight-activated PDT (DA-PDT) abolishes the need for artificial light sources and allows the patient to administer the treatment with no professional assistance. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this single-centre, open study was to establish proof of concept for the efficacy of DA-PDT in the treatment of CL using clinical, microbiological and molecular
