The trend of self-harm incidence rates among adolescents in low- and lower-middle-income countries and its associated contextual factors.

This study examined trends in adolescent self-harm incidence rates and associated contextual factors among 77 low- and lower-middle-income countries. Annual sex-specific self-harm incidence rates for ages 10-19 years were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease 2021 database. Joinpoint regression assessed trends while country and year fixed-effects models examined their association with self-harm incidence rates. Median incidence rates declined from 35.9 to 35.3 per 100,000 among males and from 40.8 to 38.1 among females. Average annual percentage changes (AAPCs) among males were negative i

An internet-based mind/body intervention to mitigate distress in women experiencing infertility: A randomized pilot trial.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if an internet-based mind/body program would lead to participants experiencing infertility (1) being willing to be recruited and randomized and (2) accepting and being ready to engage in a fertility-specific intervention. Secondary exploratory goals were to examine reduced distress over the course of the intervention and increased likelihood to conceive. METHODS: This was a pilot randomized controlled feasibility trial with a between-groups, repeated measure design. Seventy-one women self-identified as nulliparous and meeting criteria for infertility. Participants were

[The possibilities of fertility awareness methods in family planning].

The so-called restorative reproductive medicine (RRM) tries to help and support infertility couples who want to avoid the assisted reproductive technologies or they are after failed in vitro fertilization. This approach supports the spontaneous fertilization. Fertility awareness methods of natural family planning teach couples about reproductive health. They allow daily monitoring and interpretation of certain physical signs, such as cervical mucus. These changes can reflect hormonal changes in the female fertility cycle, helping to identify the ovulation in paper or electronic cycle calendars

The doing and undoing of surgical sterilization: a psychosocial profile of the tubal reimplantation patient.

A woman's decision to end her fertility surgically can be a well-founded decision with which she is satisfied, or it can be made for reasons that later lead to regret. What psychosocial factors distinguish the woman who will regret her sterilization and seek to have it reversed? Using a retrospective design, we compared 33 women who were satisfied with their ligations with 32 who chose to have the procedure reversed. We found that age, marital difficulties, emotional problems in the year prior to the ligation, and a history of unreliable contraceptive use differentiated the reversal patient fr

Testicular endothelial cells are a critical population in the germline stem cell niche.

Maintenance of adult tissues depends on stem cell self-renewal in local niches. Spermatogonial stem cells (SSC) are germline adult stem cells necessary for spermatogenesis and fertility. We show that testicular endothelial cells (TECs) are part of the SSC niche producing glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) and other factors to support human and mouse SSCs in long-term culture. We demonstrate that FGF-2 binding to FGFR1 on TECs activates the calcineurin pathway to produce GDNF. Comparison of the TEC secretome to lung and liver endothelial cells identified 5 factors sufficient for

Evidence from mosaic analysis of the masculinizing gene her-1 for cell interactions in C. elegans sex determination.

Sex in Caenorhabditis elegans is determined by a regulatory cascade of seven interacting autosomal genes controlled by three X-linked genes in response to the X chromosome-to-autosome (X/A) ratio. XX animals (high X/A) develop as self-fertile hermaphrodites, and XO animals (low X/A) develop as males. The activity of the first gene in the sex-determining cascade, her-1, is required for male sexual development. XO her-1 loss-of-function mutants develop as self-fertile hermaphrodites, whereas XX her-1 gain-of-function mutants develop as masculinized intersexes. By genetic mosaic analysis using a

Events Leading to the Establishment of Pregnancy and Placental Formation: The Need to Fine-Tune the Nomenclature on Pregnancy and Gestation.

Today, there is strong and diversified evidence that in humans at least 50% of early embryos do not proceed beyond the pre-implantation period. This evidence comes from clinical investigations, demography, epidemiology, embryology, immunology, and molecular biology. The purpose of this article is to highlight the steps leading to the establishment of pregnancy and placenta formation. These early events document the existence of a clear distinction between embryonic losses during the first two weeks after conception and those occurring during the subsequent months. This review attempts to highl

Fertility impairment in radiotherapy.

Infertility as a result of antineoplastic therapy is becoming a very important issue due to the growing incidence of neoplastic diseases. Routinely applied antineoplastic treatments and the illness itself lead to fertility disorders. Therapeutic methods used in antineoplastic treatment may cause fertility impairment or sterilization due to permanent damage to reproductive cells. The risk of sterilization depends on the patient's sex, age during therapy, type of neoplasm, radiation dose and treatment area. It is known that chemotherapy and radiotherapy can lead to fertility impairment and the c

Genetic variation at three enzyme loci within a Thailand population of Opisthorchis viverrini.

Genetic variation among 231 individuals of Opisthorchis viverrini from the Ban Phai District, Khon Kaen Province (Thailand) was examined at three polymorphic enzymes: enolase (ENOL), phosphoglucomutase (PGM), and triose phosphate isomerase (TPI). Four alleles were detected for TPI and PGM, whereas only two alleles were detected for ENOL. The inferred genotype frequencies for both TPI and ENOL were not significantly different from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. In contrast, the inferred genotype frequencies for PGM showed a significant departure from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, with a lack of hete

The Effectiveness of Mindfulness-Based Intervention on Emotional States of Women Undergoing Fertility Treatment: A Meta-Analysis.

For many infertile women, their inability to fulfill their aspirations and match society's expectations of motherhood may lead to mental illness. They frequently select in vitro fertilization (IVF) to achieve their wish to have children. In vitro fertilization is actually a multi-dimensional stressor. There are numerous psychological methods to assist patients decrease stress, among which mindfulness-based intervention is a prominent one. However, the effectiveness of mindfulness intervention in this group remains debatable. Therefore, our research seeks to evaluate the efficacy of mindfulness

Mapping ethical concerns in algorithm-driven period and fertility tracking technologies.

OBJECTIVE: The proliferation of algorithms in period and fertility tracking technologies has increased reliance on data and analytics to interpret menstrual cycle symptoms and guide health and fertility-related action. We set out to map the ethical concerns of the (often invisible) algorithmic influence on users' experience of, and behavior related to their menstrual cycle and fertility. STUDY DESIGN: Reviewing literature and media, we map six ethical concerns of algorithms in period and fertility tracking technologies - inconclusive evidence, inscrutable evidence, misguided evidence, unfair

Reproduction decision making for couples affected by HIV: a review of the literature.

Medical issues faced by HIV-affected couples include transmission risks between partners and between mother and child, as well as the technologies and procedures available to reduce those risks. Assisted reproductive techniques discussed are artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, self-insemination, and timed intercourse. It is important that physicians be aware of reproductive options available to couples affected by HIV and be prepared to engage in nonjudgmental dialogue with patients. This review is the result of a literature search performed to id

Family planning self-care: From global frameworks to local meaning, perceptions, experiences and opportunities in Niger.

Family planning (FP) self-care is a strategic pillar for advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and mitigating health workforce shortages. However, a significant disconnect persists between global normative frameworks and local implementation realities. This study examines the local meanings, perceptions, and experiences of FP self-care in Niger to inform contextualized scale-up of self-care interventions. We employed a sequential mixed-methods design in the Niamey (urban) and Zinder (rural) regions of Niger. A quantitative household survey was conducted with 510 women and 357 men to assess

A Dyadic Study of Attachment, Coping, and Quality of Life in Couples Seeking Fertility Treatment.

This study examined attachment insecurities, infertility-specific coping strategies, and quality of life (QoL) in 87 couples seeking fertility treatment. Partners completed self-report measures. Path analyses showed that women's and men's attachment anxiety were associated with their own lower QoL, whereas attachment avoidance was associated with their own and their partner's lower QoL. Adaptive coping in men and women were associated with women's higher QoL. Non-adaptive coping was associated with men and women's lower QoL. Coping strategies explained the associations between attachment and Q
