Quantification of Chronic Oxaliplatin-Induced Hypesthesia in Two Areas of the Hand.

PURPOSE: Oxaliplatin is a platinum derivate widely used in cancer treatment but producing dose-limiting peripheral neurotoxicity. Acute neuropathy is characterized by a transient cold-induced distal allodynia, whereas chronic neuropathy leads to sensory loss. To design a method for quantitative assessment of oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy, we developed a study that aims to characterize the most appropriate skin area of the hand to perform sensory tests. METHODS: We included patients treated for at least 6 months with oxaliplatin. Thermal sensory tests are assessed using the Thermot

Morphology and odor sensitivity of regenerated snail tentacles.

This study examined certain structural and functional aspects of the olfactory system in regenerated posterior tentacles of the terrestrial snail Achatina fulica. Regeneration of the epithelial sensory pad occurs with accurate size regulation. All five neuronal cell types which are normally revealed by horseradish peroxidase backfilling are also regenerated. The sensory cells attain normal numbers at about 20 weeks postlesion. The organization of neuronal elements within the tentacle is chaotic, however, at early stages of regeneration. Even later, the digitlike extensions of the ganglion, whi

Thresholds for the detection of the direction of whole-body, linear movement in the horizontal plane.

Thresholds for the detection (at p = 0.67 correct) of the direction of discrete linear movements in the horizontal plane, having a cosine bell velocity trajectory and duration of 3 s, were determined in 24 subjects. Thresholds in the Z body axis (mean 0.154 m X s-2) were significantly higher than thresholds for movement in the X (mean 0.063 m X s-2) and Y (mean 0.057 m X s-2) body axes. In 8 subjects, X axis acceleration threshold was found to increase as a monotonic function of stimulus duration over the range 0.98 to 6.96 s and exhibited similar frequency-dependent characteristics to thresho

Odor dilution sorting as a clinical test of olfactory function: normative values and reliability data.

Clinical assessment of an individual's sense of smell has gained prominence, but its resource-intensive nature necessitates the exploration of self-administered methods. In this study, a cohort of 68 patients with olfactory loss and 55 controls were assessed using a recently introduced olfactory test. This test involves sorting 2 odorants (eugenol and phenylethyl alcohol) in 5 dilutions according to odor intensity, with an average application time of 3.5 min. The sorting task score, calculated as the mean of Kendall's Tau between the assigned and true dilution orders and normalized to [0,1], i

Visual acuity of budgerigars for moving targets.

For a bird, it is often vital to visually detect food items, predators, or individuals from the same flock, i.e. moving stimuli of various shapes. Yet, behavioural tests of visual spatial acuity traditionally use stationary gratings as stimuli. We have behaviourally tested the ability of budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) to detect a black circular target, moving semi-randomly at 1.69 degrees s-1 against a brighter background. We found a detection threshold of 0.107±0.007 degrees of the visual field for a target size corresponding to a resolution of a grating with a spatial frequency of 4.6

Pressure-Specifying Sensory Device: quantitative sensory measurement in the oral cavity and oropharynx of normal adults.

We conducted a study to quantitatively determine the pressure perception thresholds in the oral cavity and oropharynx of a normal population with the Pressure-Specifying Sensory Device (PSSD). The PSSD measured pressure perception thresholds for both static and moving one- and two-point discrimination modalities at a variety of sites in the oral cavity and oropharynx as well as in the forearm of 11 adults. We also evaluated the ability of the PSSD to enhance sensory discrimination in four of these subjects by the process of sensory re-education for 11 days over a 15-day period. We found that t

Changes in spontaneous neural activity in the dorsal cochlear nucleus following exposure to intense sound: relation to threshold shift.

Previous studies have shown that the dorsal cochlear nucleus exhibits increased spontaneous activity after exposure to intense sound. Such increases were apparent 1-2 months after the exposure and were generally proportional to the shift in response thresholds induced by the same exposure. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether this sound-induced increase in spontaneous activity is an early event which can be observed shortly after exposure. As in previous studies, anesthetized hamsters ranging in postnatal age from 60-70 days were exposed to a 10-kHz tone at levels between

Motion deblurring in human vision.

Under normal viewing conditions we are little conscious of blur in moving objects, despite the persistence of vision. Moving objects look more blurred in brief than in long exposures, suggesting an active mechanism for suppressing motion blur. To see whether blur suppression would improve visual discrimination of objects, we measured blur discrimination thresholds for moving Gaussian-blurred edges and bars. The observer's task was to decide which of two moving stimuli, presented successively, was the more blurred. It is known that for stationary objects the just-noticeable difference in blur i

Touch sensitivity of the eyelid margin and palpebral conjunctiva.

Using a slit-lamp biomicroscope mounted Cochet-Bonnet aesthesiometer, the touch sensitivity of the eyelid margin and palpebral conjunctiva was determined for both upper and lower lids in 30 subjects. Thresholds for the occlusal surface of the lid, the marginal angle and the middle of the tarsus were measured centrally. A significantly higher touch sensitivity was found for the marginal zone compared with the occlusal surface, and tarsal conjunctival sensitivity was substantially the lowest. The occlusal and marginal zones of the lower lid displayed a significantly higher touch sensitivity than

Importance of unilateral examination in olfactometry.

Hyposmia, the decreased sense of smell, and anosmia, the loss of sense of smell, may be unilateral or bilateral. If the olfactory acuity examined by means of bilateral test is normal, olfactory disorders are not found; unilateral examination is therefore necessary for definite evaluation of olfactory acuity. As evidence, 7 cases out of 94 patients with chronic rhinosinusitis and 6 cases out of 12 patients who received the surgery of anterior cranial fossa showed definite different olfactory threshold between nasal cavities, and there were no patients who recognized the diminished sense of smel

Differences in behaviour of sensory and motor axons following release of ischaemia.

The changes in excitability and supernormality of sensory and motor axons of the median (or ulnar) nerve were tracked during and following ischaemia at the wrist for periods of 5-20 min in normal human volunteers. Supernormality was defined as the fractional increase in excitability produced by a maximal conditioning stimulus, 10 ms before the test stimulus. With relatively brief periods of ischaemia (< 10 min), sensory and motor axons behaved similarly, with an increase in excitability (producing a decrease in threshold) and a decrease in supernormality during ischaemia and a long-lasting dec

Impact of sympathetic activation on pain threshold in human subjects.

This study examined the effect of the sympathetic activation with the head-up tilt test (HUT) on electrocutaneous pain in 56 young normotensive volunteers. Systolic arterial blood pressure (SAP), diastolic arterial blood pressure (DAP), heart rate (HR), sensory and pain thresholds to electrocutaneous stimulation were measured 30s before (in supine position), during (at 10s, 90s, 3min and 5min) and 10min after HUT (in supine position). No relationship was found between resting BP and pain perception. HUT significantly increased DAP and HR, but did not change SAP. During HUT, both sensory and pa

Quantitative sensory test findings in cervical radicular pain and their relationship with the symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to define and compare sensory phenotypes in cervical radiculopathy patients exhibiting neuropathic pain (NP) components with healthy volunteers using clinical examination and quantitative sensory test (QST) findings. Another aim of the study is to show whether symptomatic components of the pain detect questionnaire (PDQ) are correlated with the QST findings, which may help clinicians indicate patients with sensory abnormalities without the use of specialized tests. METHODS: Fifty-seven participants were included in the study, including patients with NP (n=20) and h

Children and adolescents with primary headaches exhibit altered sensory profiles - a multi-modal investigation.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric headache is an increasing medical problem that has adverse effects on children's quality of life, academic performance, and social functioning. Children with primary headaches exhibit enhanced sensory sensitivity compared to their healthy peers. However, comprehensive investigations including multimodal sensory sensitivity assessment are lacking. This study aimed to compare sensory sensitivity of children with primary headaches with their healthy peers across multiple sensory domains. METHODS: The study included 172 participants aged 6 to 17 years (M = 13.09, SD = 3.02 y

Sensory perception in patients with trigeminal neuralgia: effects of percutaneous retrogasserian glycerol rhizotomy.

We assessed thresholds for sensation of temperature and pressure and temporal summation of pain in the trigger area on the painful side and the contralateral nonpainful side in patients with trigeminal neuralgia previously treated with percutaneous retrogasserian glycerol rhizotomy (PRGR). Temperature and tactile thresholds were significantly increased on the painful side in both pain-free patients and patients with paroxysmal pain, but sensory loss was not more severe in patients with paroxysmal pain, except for increased warm thresholds. Abnormal temporal summation of pain (including progres

Visual sensory processing is altered in myoclonus dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal sensory processing, including temporal discrimination threshold, has been described in various dystonic syndromes. OBJECTIVE: To investigate visual sensory processing in DYT-SGCE and identify its structural correlates. METHODS: DYT-SGCE patients without DBS (DYT-SGCE-non-DBS) and with DBS (DYT-SGCE-DBS) were compared to healthy volunteers in three tasks: a temporal discrimination threshold, a movement orientation discrimination, and movement speed discrimination. Response times attributed to accumulation of sensory visual information were computationally modelized, with
