Monoclonal antibodies: technology and potential use.

The production of monoclonal antibodies through cell hybridization is a form of biotechnology that permits the dissection of complex antibody responses into their individual components. The procedure makes use of simple cell fusion techniques and standard in vitro tissue culture systems. The 2 essential biological components are immunized mice or rats and tumor cell lines of lymphoid origin called myelomas. Single antibody-forming cells from immunized rodents are fused with myeloma cells to create hybrid cells with properties of both parent cell types. The hybrids have an unlimited capacity to

Major depressive disorder and marital transition among mothers: results from a national panel study.

This analysis employs a national panel study to examine the relationship between marital transition and depression among mothers within the framework of selection and causation processes. The data come from the two-wave, longitudinal National Population Health Survey (NPHS) by Statistics Canada collected in 1994 and again in 1996 focusing on women between 20 and 65 years of age with children living at home (N = 2169). Compared with mothers who remain married, mothers making the transition into single-parenthood had a significantly higher rate of major depression at Time 1, which increased, but

Prevalence of monogamy at the level of flowers in plants.

Different types of genomic conflicts are possible in plants with multiovulate ovaries that produce multiseeded fruits: between the maternal plant and its offspring, among developing seeds, between paternal and maternal genomes over seed development, and among paternal parents if different parents sire seeds within an ovary. We tested the hypothesis that such conflicts in multiseeded fruits can be reduced if seeds are sired by a single pollen parent. We conducted a meta-analysis of paternity in 63 species across diverse plant families to assess paternity within fruits. Our results reveal that a

Advancing the assessment of parent-child interactions: development of the Parent Instruction-Giving Game with Youngsters.

This study investigates the validity of the Parent Instruction-Giving Game with Youngsters (PIGGY), a newly developed direct-observation system. The PIGGY is a derivative of the Dyadic Parent-Child Interaction Coding System II [DPICS-II; Eyberg, S. M., Bessmer, J., Newcomb, K., Edwards, D., Robinson, E. (1994). Child well-being in single-mother families.

OBJECTIVES: Children from single-mother families are at increased risk of psychosocial morbidity. This article examines the strength of association between single-mother family status and child outcome, both alone and controlling for other sociodemographic and personal (maternal/family) variables. METHOD: Data from the Canadian National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth Cycle 1 (1994-1995) were used. Children aged 6 to 11 years in single-mother and two-parent families were included (n = 9,398). Child functioning measures included social impairment, psychiatric problems, and math score

Single Motherhood, Living Arrangements, and Time With Children in Japan.

The authors examined relationships between single parenthood and mothers' time with children in Japan. Using data from the 2011 National Survey of Households with Children (N = 1,926), they first demonstrate that time spent with children and the frequency of shared dinners are significantly lower for single mothers than for their married counterparts. For single mothers living alone, less time with children reflects long work hours and work-related stress. Single mothers coresiding with parents spend less time with children and eat dinner together less frequently than either married mothers or…

Early Communication Intervention for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Toddlers: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVE: To maximize outcomes for deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children, it is essential to develop effective early interventions. Parent-mediated interventions (PMIs) are a promising form of early communication interventions for DHH toddlers. The current study tests the effect of the PMI by evaluating (1) the effect of the PMI on parent strategy use and child communication and (2) the extent to which communication mode moderates these effects. METHODS: This single-site parallel stratified clinical trial (2 × 2; hearing device, communication mode) enrolled 96 parent-child dyads. Child inc

Endovascular treatment of isolated posterior inferior cerebellar artery dissecting aneurysms: parent artery occlusion or selective coiling?

PURPOSE: Isolated posterior inferior cerebellar artery dissecting aneurysms are rare lesions. Their underlying pathology, presentation, and natural history are poorly understood. Their treatment is controversial, and few data are available regarding the best treatment. We conducted the first study comparing selective coiling and parent artery occlusion for the treatment of isolated PICA dissecting aneurysms. METHODS: All patients harboring isolated PICA dissecting aneurysms treated between January 2006 and October 2012, in a single center, were retrospectively evaluated. Patients were consecu

Prevalence, patterns, and persistence of sleep problems in the first 3 years of life.

OBJECTIVE: Examine the prevalence, patterns, and persistence of parent-reported sleep problems during the first 3 years of life. METHODS: Three hundred fifty-nine mother/child pairs participated in a prospective birth cohort study. Sleep questionnaires were administered to mothers when children were 6, 12, 24, and 36 months old. Sleep variables included parent response to a nonspecific query about the presence/absence of a sleep problem and 8 specific sleep outcome domains: sleep onset latency, sleep maintenance, 24-hour sleep duration, daytime sleep/naps, sleep location, restlessness/vocaliz

Single and multiple dose pharmacokinetics of etizolam in healthy subjects.

The pharmacokinetics of etizolam, a new thienodiazepine derivative, has been examined after single and multiple (0.5 mg tablet) (0.5 mg b.d for 1 week) oral therapeutic doses in healthy volunteers. The single-dose kinetic profile of etizolam suggested that absorption after oral dosage was reasonably rapid, the maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) being attained within 0.5-2 h in all subjects. The mean elimination half-life (t1/2) averaged 3.4 h. Consistent with this, steady-state concentration were rapidly achieved and accumulation was extremely limited. Predicted average plasma concentrations

Alignment of parent-proxy report and teen self-report of adverse childhood experiences among U.S. teens.

PURPOSE: Data on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among teens is collected using a single informant, a parent-proxy, or teen self-report. Little is known about alignment between these approaches. METHODS: Surveys were administered online to teens ages 15-17 and their parents (n = 522 dyads) using the AmeriSpeak panel. We present descriptive statistics on the prevalence and measures agreement for 18 ACEs based on teen self-report and parent-proxy report. We fit multivariable models examining associations between teen and household demographic characteristics and discordance in ACE report.

Characterization of a highly attenuated Japanese encephalitis virus generated from molecularly cloned cDNA.

Six recombinant Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) isolates were recovered from infectious RNAs transcribed by T7 RNA polymerase from molecularly cloned cDNA templates. Three of the recombinant viruses had characteristics similar to the wild-type parent virus, JaOArS982. The other 3 recombinant viruses exhibited an attenuated phenotype in mice. An avirulent recombinant virus, IC47, was characterized and compared with the wild-type parent virus and a virulent recombinant virus, IC37. IC47 produced smaller plaques than parent or IC37 viruses and exhibited no viremia or neuroinvasion in young adul

The impact of divorce on adolescents.

A consensus that divorce constitutes a major disruption and disequilibrium in the lives of nearly all children is emerging. Reactions vary at different developmental stages. Divorce poses a very specific hazard to the normal adolescent process of emancipation from primary love objects. The author reviews recent research on the short-and long-term effects of parental divorce on adolescents, with special reference to adolescent developmental tasks. Treatment based on a psychoanalytic developmental perspective combined with a family systems approach is recommended. Careful attention should be pai

Children's Divorce and Parent-Child Contact: A Within-Family Analysis of Older European Parents.

OBJECTIVES: Studies have shown that a parental divorce has a negative effect on parent-child relations. This study examines how adult children's divorce affects the amount of contact children have with older parents, making a distinction between the effects of being single on the one hand and the effects of divorce on the other hand. METHOD: Using data on older adults in 11 European countries, I estimate within-family regression models to compare multiple adult children per parent (19,454 children aged 30-49; 10,476 parents aged 50-96). I analyze contact frequency while taking into account co

"I Don't Know Where I Have to Knock for Support": A Mixed-Methods Study on Perceptions and Experiences of Single Mothers Raising Children in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Introduction and Objectives: It is well-documented that single mothers in sub-Saharan Africa face unique psychosocial challenges which can lead to child health and developmental disadvantages, often impacting life trajectories for both the mother and child. Years of instability, conflict, and widespread poor governance within the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have resulted in magnified challenges for parents, making it more difficult to provide supportive and effective parenting. To address gaps in knowledge regarding the specific challenges experienced and adaptations made among single m

The Relationship Between Insufficient Sleep and Depressive Symptoms in Chinese Adolescents: A National Survey of Contributing Factors.

PURPOSE: There is a lack of national studies examining the relationship between insufficient sleep and depression among Chinese adolescents, … risk factors included higher body mass index (BMI), older age, parental divorce, and living with a single parent (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Insufficient sleep is significantly associated with depressive symptoms in Chinese adolescents. The adolescents with insufficient sleep, particularly those who are older, have a higher BMI, or come from divorced or single-pa …

A systematic review of the evidence on the effect of parental communication about health and health behaviours on children's health and wellbeing.

Parents report feeling unsure how best to talk with their children about sensitive health topics and may avoid such conversations; yet if children have questions or concerns about their health, talking to a parent could enhance their health and wellbeing. We investigated the effects of parental communications about health and health behaviours on children's health and wellbeing, and explored what strategies can encourage parents to communicate about health. We conducted a systematic review and narrative synthesis of research published between January 2008 and April 2020 from five databases. Of

Correlates of Impairment and Growth in Families of Young Autistic Children.

The purpose of this project was to investigate potential correlates of family life impairment in families of young autistic children. This project incorporated measures of specific child and parent challenges in addition to a commonly used unidimensional measure of autism characteristics. In this way, we could assess whether such challenges explain variance in family life impairment, and whether their inclusion diminish associations between autism characteristics and family life impairment. Cross-sectional data were collected from 564 parents of autistic children aged 2 to 5 years who particip

Single Motherhood, Alcohol Dependence, and Smoking During Pregnancy: A Propensity Score Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Few studies linking single motherhood and maternal smoking during pregnancy consider correlated risk from problem substance use beyond history of smoking and concurrent use of alcohol. In the present study, we used propensity score methods to examine whether the risk of smoking during pregnancy associated with single motherhood is the result of potential confounders, including alcohol dependence. METHOD: Data were drawn from mothers participating in a birth cohort study of their female like-sex twin offspring (n = 257 African ancestry; n = 1,711 European or other ancestry). We cond
