The vault of the skull is a region of the neurocranium formed by a process of membranous ossification. It consists of several bones: frontal bone, parietal bone, squamous part of the temporal bone, lamina ascendens of the sphenoid, and interparietal bone. The embryological origin of the bones of the skull vault is still the subject of controversy. This can be explained by the different animal models used for these purposes, but also by the various techniques applied to this problem. At all events, it seems that the cells of the neural crest generate some of the bones of the vault and that the

Congenital depression of the fetal skull is a rare condition. We discuss the case of a 14-days-old male infant, born at term by elective non-complicated caesarean section presenting with a left temporoparietal skull depression. A CT scan was performed which showed no associated fracture. A conservative approach was followed since the infant showed no signs of neurological deficit. Similar cases have been managed successfully in other reports using a conservative approach, with the condition being often self-resolving over the course of a few months.

A variety of histologic tumor types are present in the anterior skull base. Primary tumors of this area may be derived from the bone, paranasal sinuses, nasopharynx, dura, cranial nerves, pituitary gland and brain. Symptoms are caused mostly through mass effect but, if the tumor becomes aggressive, also through invasion. Selection of surgical approaches to the anterior skull base is based upon balancing risk reduction with maximizing extent of resection. Here we review a spectrum of neoplastic entities found in the anterior skull base in adults and discuss clinical and radiographic presentatio

Basilar skull fractures are a relatively frequent occurrence in significant head trauma, and their detection is important, as even linear nondisplaced fractures can be associated with critical complications. The management of skull base fractures depends on the location and extent of these associated complications. This article reviews skull base anatomy; morphology of the common fracture patterns within the anterior, central, and posterior skull base; associated complications; imaging findings; and possible pitfalls in imaging of skull base trauma.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Myoepithelioma of bone is a rare osseous tumor thought to be related to myoepithelial lesions found at other anatomic sites such as the salivary gland and skin. These tumors are composed of varying proportions of epithelial and myoepithelial cells and exhibit a spectrum of biologic behavior ranging from benign to malignant. We present the first reported case of myoepithelioma of the skull.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old white woman presented with a persistent right parieto-occipital skull nodule, relating its presence to a fall on the site 2 years previously.

Calvarial cavernous hemangiomas (CHs) comprise 0.2% of benign neoplasms of the skull and frequently occur in the second and fourth decades. Their occurrence in infancy is extremely rare and they can initially be misdiagnosed as cephal hematoma or caput succadeneum that can occur due to the birth trauma, but trauma is not a predisposing factor. CT scan is more helpful than other neuro-imaging studies and untreated CHs of the skull may show progression. Only two cases of congenital primary CH of the skull without intracranial invasion have been reported in the literature. Herewith we reported a

BACKGROUND: Tumours and metastases of the lateral skull base are rare findings. Clinically, the progressive involvement of ipsilateral cranial nerves is important.
CASE REPORT: A 69-year-old man presented with headache and palsies of the facial nerve and nerve VI. Furthermore, he had hearing loss and hypaesthesia of the trigeminal nerve (V3). Four months previously, laser therapy for carcinoma of the trachea (cT4 cN3 cM0) had been done. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an intrapetrosal mass with destruction of the lateral skull base. The findings suggeste

This article briefly discusses the imaging approach to lesions of the anterior skull base. A brief review of normal anatomy and imaging techniques is followed by a discussion about common neoplastic and non-neoplastic pathologies involving this region.

Stereotactic radiosurgery is commonly used for selected patients with benign cranial base tumors. The goal of radiosurgery is cessation of tumor growth and preservation of neurological function. Over the last 2 decades, the technique of radiosurgery has evolved due to improved imaging, better radiosurgical devices and software, and the continued analysis of results. In this report, the authors discuss technical concepts and dose selection in skull base radiosurgery.

The surgery and management of children who have congenital malformations of the skull and meninges require multidisciplinary care and long-term follow-up by multiple specialists in birth defects. The high definition of three-dimensional CT and MRI allows precise surgery planning of reconstruction and management of associated malformations. The reconstruction of meningoencephaloceles and craniosynostosis are challenging procedures that transform the child's appearance. The embryology, clinical presentation, and surgical management of these malformations are reviewed.

CASE REPORT: A 1-year-old girl presented with a 10-month history of progressive protuberance of the left frontal skull. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography demonstrated a large osteolytic interosseous mass extending to the frontal sinus and temporal base without any intracranial invasion. A fronto-temporo-parietal craniectomy of the outer skull table and excision of an interosseous tumor resulted in local dural exposure in the temporal area that was covered by cranioplasty. Pathological examination identified desmoplastic fibroma (DF) of the skull. The patient's cranial asymmetr

An unsual case of penetrating nasal injury with middle skull base involvement, from fired arrow is reported. The arrow was surgically removed and the patient remains well with no sequelae. We therefore present this case because of its rarity. The anatomical principles underlying the surgical management of the lesions are discussed.

BACKGROUND: The description of the otorhinolaryngeal and craniofacial anomalies in patients with cleidocranial dysplasia.
METHODS: For this study, 26 patients with cleidocranial dysplasia were examined after their medical history had been recorded. The main focus was placed on otorhinolaryngological and orthodontic findings.
RESULTS: The portion of spontaneous mutations in our patient population was 46.1%. All patients exhibited otorhinolaryngological and craniofacial anomalies. While single ENT-anomalies were expressed in 76.9%-92.3% of the patients, the craniofacial findings were distribut

The art of interpreting skull radiographs is slowly being lost as trainees in radiology see fewer plain radiographs and depend more heavily on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Nevertheless, skull radiographs still provide significant information that is helpful in finding pathologic conditions and appreciating their extents. Abnormalities in the skull may be reflected as variations in the density, size, and shape of the skull, as well as skull defects. Skeletal dysplasias may manifest as a generalized decrease in calvarial density (hypophosphatasia, osteogenesis imperfecta),

The article contains the results of an experimental modeling of the destruction of the head of a bio-mannequin by compressing it between two blunt objects with the hard, flat and broad surfaces and by using a mechanical press (with slow motion) and freely falling object (with fast motion). The obtained results were compared with two opposite-direction blows by a similar object. The author studied the main regularities of fractures of the skull of the main shapes, i.e. ellipsoid or ovoid as well as spheroid and rhomboid shapes, at different directions of its compression (sagittal, lateral, diag

Neuronavigation (computer-aided surgery planning and performance) has proven to be helpful in performing neurosurgical operations. The experiences of our department gained on more than 500 patients operated upon will be presented, with special focus on more than 100 operations for lesions on the skull base. Navigation is one of several modern surgical tools, its value cannot be defined without observing other improvements e.g. in the area of preoperative diagnostics, intraoperative monitoring, microsurgical instruments and microsurgical approaches.
