Pragmatics can be defined as the way in which language is used to communicate in a given social context. Although there is a lack of a standardized assessment, healthcare professionals find themselves confronted with pragmatic language skill impairments in children with neurodevelopmental disorders or brain injuries. The characterization of language use causes problems in social interactions, which has clinical implications in daily life. However, this is still underestimated because there is currently no quick, easy-to-use screening device to rank these deficits. We have developed a pragmatic

High comorbidity and diagnostic overlap between autism spectrum disorder and social anxiety disorder have been documented. We examined if differences in adaptive behavior, essential for daily functioning, could differentiate these conditions among young university students. Eighty-eight autistic and 123 non-autistic undergraduates were categorized into four groups: autistic individuals: with low (n = 26)/high (n = 62) social anxiety (SA) symptoms; non-autistic: with low (n = 63)/high (n = 60) SA. The Adaptive Behavior Assessment System (ABAS) was utilized to assess three domains of adaptive sk

BACKGROUND: Social communication is a key area of difficulty in fragile X syndrome (FXS) and there are not yet adequate outcome measurement tools. Appropriate outcome measures for FXS have been identified as a key area of research interest in order to evaluate future therapeutic trials. The Brief Observation of Social Communication Change-Minimally Verbal (BOSCC-MV), an outcome measure with strong psychometrics developed for autism spectrum disorder, has promise as an outcome measure to assess social communication change with FXS participants.
METHODS: We examined the BOSCC-MV via central cod

Parent management training (PMT) is recommended treatment for children with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and child-directed cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is also recommended for school-aged children. The current study examined 2-year follow-up effects of parent management training (PMT) combined with the CBT based group intervention Coping Power Program (CPP) compared to PMT only. Results showed long-term effectiveness of both PMT and PMT combined with CPP in reduced disruptive behavior problems and harsh parenting strategies, and increased emotion regulation- and social communicatio

Selective mutism (SM) is a rare disorder that is associated with both anxiety and communication impairments. Preliminary evidence suggests that educational attainment and development of social skills and self-esteem may be affected by SM in a significant proportion of cases. There is a critical need for cross-disciplinary research from the fields of speech-language pathology, psychiatry, and clinical psychology to develop protocols for assessing language and cognitive functioning in children with SM and developing interventions that address psychiatric, communicative, and social aspects of thi

BACKGROUND: Many children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) demonstrate impairment in social skills. However, ADHD rarely occurs in isolation, with approximately one-third of children with ADHD having one additional disorder, and another third having two or three comorbidities. Few studies have considered the global and specific patterns of social skill performance based on comorbidity status.
METHOD: Using a large dataset containing 1400 carefully phenotyped children with ADHD (ages 7-12; 28% girls) in the United States and Canada, we characterized social skill deficit pro

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder. Its three core symptoms are social communication disorder, communication disorder, narrow interest and stereotyped repetitive behavior. The proportion of male and female autistic patients is 4:1. Many researchers have studied this phenomenon, but the mechanism is still unclear. This review mainly discusses the related mechanism from the perspective of gut microbiota and introduces the influence of gut microbiota on the difference of ASD between men and women, as well as how gut microbiota may affect the gender dimorphism …

Pragmatic language competence-the ability to use language effectively in social contexts-is foundational for communication, learning, and social integration. Difficulties in pragmatics are not only a hallmark of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) but are also prevalent across developmental disabilities, including ADHD, developmental language disorder, and intellectual disability. Such deficits predict long-term challenges in adaptive functioning, peer relationships, and educational attainment. This longitudinal study investigates early predictors of pragmatic language competence in middle childhoo

BACKGROUND: Language and communication skills are essential aspects of child development, which are often disrupted in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Cutting edge research in psycholinguistics suggests that multilingualism has potential to influence social, linguistic and cognitive development. Thus, multilingualism has implications for clinical assessment, diagnostic formulation, intervention and support offered to families. We present a systematic review and synthesis of the effects of multilingualism for children with neurodevelopmental disorders and discuss clinical implicatio

HEALTH PROBLEM: In Germany, about 100,000 people currently suffer from aphasia. This speech disorder occurs as a result of neurologic events such as stroke or traumatic brain injury. Aphasia causes major limitations in social participation and quality of life and can be associated with unemployability and social isolation. For affected persons, it is essential to regain and maintain autonomy in daily life, both at work and with family and friends. The loss of autonomy is perceived much more dramatically than the loss of speech. Clients wish to minimise this loss of autonomy in daily life. As f

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by persistent deficits in social communication, and conventional therapies often struggle to facilitate the generalization of these skills to real-world settings. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a virtual reality (VR)-based communication rehabilitation intervention as a supplement to conventional treatment for improving the linguistic and social communication skills of Arabic-speaking Egyptian children with ASD. A clinical trial with a pretest-posttest control group design was employed, wherein 60 children aged 4-6 years with m

Autism is currently considered as a neurodevelopmental disorder called "autism spectrum disorder" (ASD). Its diagnosis is based on assessments focusing on two main areas: the presence of persistent impairments in communication and social interactions in varied contexts, as well as the presence of a stereotypical or repetitive nature of the subject's movements, use of objects or language. The complementary functional diagnosis enables a personalised project to be constructed taking into account the resources and difficulties of the individual with ASD. It focuses on cognitive, communication, ps

Autism is a disorder of social communication, originally described as a triad of impaired social interaction, communication, and imagination, associated with a rigid, repetitive pattern of behaviour. More recently the core deficit has been described as a lack of social instinct. The term autism spectrum disorder (ASD) includes autism, atypical autism and Asperger's syndrome. According to NICE, diagnostic assessment should start within three months of referral. The decision to refer should be made on the basis of signs or symptoms. Information from all sources (i.e. medical history, parental co

Advances in the identification of the early signs of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have occurred despite the heterogeneity of the disorder and its variable onset and presentation. Using various methodologies including retrospective studies, community samples, and sibling cohorts, researchers have identified behavioral markers of the disorder that emerge over the first 2 years of life. However, there are characteristics of ASD that overlap with other types of developmental delay (DD), which may complicate differential diagnosis in young children. A review of the literature was conducted to ide

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) are both characterized by social difficulties, but overall clinical descriptions of the two disorders are different.
METHOD: Twenty-nine children with autism and 33 children with pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) were compared to 29 children with FASD of equivalent age and full-scale IQ. To isolate social deficits that are most unique to ASD, all participants were administered the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS). Parents of the children completed the Autism Diag

UNLABELLED: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare, autosomal dominant genetic syndrome that confers significantly increased risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with 50-60% of infants with TSC meeting criteria for ASD by 3 years of age. In a previous study of the current longitudinal cohort, we found that infants with TSC who develop ASD (TSC/ASD) evidence decreased cognitive abilities that diverge from infants with TSC and no ASD (TSC/no ASD). We extended this work by asking whether TSC/ASD infants (n = 13) differed from TSC/no ASD infants (n = 10) and infants with low developmental

The aim of this study was to provide a descriptive overview of the social characteristics associated with Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome (WSS). A total of 24 parents of children/adults with WSS (11F, mean age = 12.94 years, SD = 8.00) completed the Social Responsiveness Scale 2nd Edition (SRS-2); Colorado Learning Difficulties Questionnaire (CLDQ) and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Almost half our sample reported a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 70% had intellectual disability. On the SDQ, over 90% of participants were rated in borderline/clinical ranges in Peer P

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) represent a heterogeneous group of disorders, with onset in developmental age, which present a clinical expressiveness that varies from subject to subject and in the same subject over time. The DSM 5 defines Autism Spectrum Disorders according to two main criteria: persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction in multiple contexts and limited and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests or activities. This disorder can manifest itself across a broad spectrum of severity levels. Indeed, ASD includes clinical conditions from low functioning
