Investigating the Interplay Between Mental Health Conditions and Social Connectedness on Suicide Risk: Findings from a Clinical Sample of Adolescents.

This study examined whether school and community connectedness buffer the relationships between mental health conditions and suicide risk in a clinical sample of adolescents with histories of substance use disorders. Data from 294 adolescents were examined, with approximately 58% reporting lifetime suicidal ideation and/or prior attempts. Multinomial logistic regression was used to examine main and interaction effects on a three-category measure of suicide risk. Depression severity and panic disorder were associated with elevated suicidal ideation risk, whereas disordered eating was associated

Exploring the enablers and barriers to social prescribing for people living with long-term neurological conditions: a focus group investigation.

BACKGROUND: People living with Long Term Neurological Conditions (LTNCs) value peer support and social activities. Psychological support and wellbeing enables them to manage their condition. Social prescribing is a formal process of referring patients to a link worker to co-design a plan to improve their health and wellbeing. Intervention involves supporting participation in activities based within the individual's local community. This study aimed to explore the barriers and enablers to accessing social prescribing for people living with LTNCs (plwLTNCs). METHODS: A total of four focus group

Working conditions mediate the association between social class and physical function in older age in Sweden: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Global demographics are changing as societies all over the world are aging. This puts focus on maintaining functional ability and independence into older age. Individuals from lower social classes are at greater risk of developing limitations in physical function later in life. In this study, we investigated the mediating role of working conditions in the association between occupation-based social class and physical function measured as self-reported mobility limitations and objectively measured physical impairment in older age. METHODS: Two Swedish surveys, linked at the individ

Social and environmental conditions related to Mycobacterium leprae infection in children and adolescents from three leprosy endemic regions of Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy is is still considered a public health issue and in Colombia 7-10% of new cases are found in children, indicating both active transmission and social inequality. We hypothesized that circulating antibodies against Natural Octyl Disaccharide-Leprosy IDRI Diagnostic (NDO-LID) (a combination of Mycobacterium leprae antigens) could reveal the social and environmental aspects associated with higher frequencies of M. leprae infection among children and adolescents in Colombia. METHODS: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted involving sampling from 82 children and a

Comorbidity of social anxiety disorder and antisocial personality disorder in the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC).

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) are not often thought of as being comorbid. However, recent research suggests the existence of a SAD subtype with characteristics atypical of SAD but common to ASPD. Thus, we explored two competing hypotheses: (1) SAD and ASPD represent opposite ends of a single dimension, or (2) SAD and ASPD exist on two separate dimensions that may be positively correlated. Data were obtained from the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions. SAD-ASPD was related to greater impairment and psychiatric comorbidity

Biological and environmental initial conditions shape the trajectories of cognitive and social-emotional development across the first years of life.

Human development is thought to evolve from the dynamic interchange of biological dispositions and environmental provisions; yet the effects of specific biological and environmental birth conditions on the trajectories of cognitive and social-emotional growth have rarely been studied. We observed 126 children at six time-points from birth to 5 years. Intelligence, maternal sensitivity, and child social engagement were repeatedly tested. Effects of neonatal vagal tone (VT) and maternal postpartum depressive symptoms on growth-rates were assessed. Cognitive development showed a substantial growt

Loneliness and social isolation in transitions to adverse health conditions and mortality: an analysis of data from the UK Biobank study.

BACKGROUND: Adverse health conditions may serve as intermediate states linking loneliness and social isolation with excess mortality. We examined whether loneliness and social isolation are primarily associated with the risk of developing an adverse health condition or with prognosis after diagnosis. METHODS: A cohort of 236 879 individuals from the UK Biobank was followed from baseline in 2006-2010 until death or administrative end of follow-up in 2022. The incidence of three broad categories of adverse health conditions, (1) neoplasms, (2) endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases and (

Impact of pre-existing conditions on the severity of post-COVID syndrome among workers in healthcare and social services in Germany.

BACKGROUND: The underlying mechanisms of post-COVID syndrome (PCS) are still not fully understood. While pre-existing conditions have been described as a risk factor for severe PCS in the general population, data specific to different occupational groups in this context is lacking. This study aimed to investigate the impact of pre-existing conditions on severe post-COVID syndrome among the occupational group of healthcare and social services employees. METHODS: Baseline data from a longitudinal, observational study were analysed. In February 2021, health workers who had a COVID-19 infection i

Whole brain correlates of individual differences in skin conductance responses during discriminative fear conditioning to social cues.

Understanding the neural basis for individual differences in the skin conductance response (SCR) during discriminative fear conditioning may inform on our understanding of autonomic regulation in fear-related psychopathology. Previous region-of-interest (ROI) analyses have implicated the amygdala in regulating conditioned SCR, but whole brain analyses are lacking. This study examined correlations between individual differences in SCR during discriminative fear conditioning to social stimuli and neural activity throughout the brain, by using data from a large functional magnetic resonance imagi

Effect of Voluntary Wheel-Running Exercise on the Endocrine and Inflammatory Response to Social Stress: Conditioned Rewarding Effects of Cocaine.

The present paper evaluates the effect of physical activity on the increase of the conditioned rewarding effects of cocaine induced by intermittent social stress and on the neuroinflammatory response that contributes to the enhancement of drug response. For that purpose, three studies were designed in which social stress was induced in different samples of mice through a social-defeat protocol; the mice underwent an increase of physical activity by different modalities of voluntary wheel running (continuous and intermittent access). The results showed that continuous access to running wheels p

Mediating engagement in a social network intervention for people living with a long-term condition: A qualitative study of the role of facilitation.

BACKGROUND: Successful facilitation of patient-centred interventions for self-management support has traditionally focussed on individual behaviour change. A social network approach to self-management support implicates the need for facilitation that includes an orientation to connecting to and mobilizing support and resources from other people and the local environment. OBJECTIVE: To identify the facilitation processes through which engagement with a social network approach to self-management is achieved. METHOD: Thematic analysis was used to analyse data from a longitudinal study design us

Behavioral Traits Associated With Resilience to the Effects of Repeated Social Defeat on Cocaine-Induced Conditioned Place Preference in Mice.

The relationship between stress and drug use is well demonstrated. Stress-induced by repeated social defeat (RSD) enhances the conditioned place preference (CPP) induced by cocaine in mice. The phenomenon of resilience understood as the ability of subjects to overcome the negative effects of stress is the focus of increasing interest. Our aim is to characterize the behavior of resilient animals with respect to the effects of RSD on the CPP induced by cocaine. To this end, 25 male C57BL/6 mice were exposed to stress by RSD during late adolescence, while other 15 male mice did not undergo stress

Personalized and typical concurrent risk of limitations in social activity and mobility in older persons with multiple chronic conditions and polypharmacy.

PURPOSE: We define personalized concurrent risk (PCR) as the subject-specific probability of an index outcome within a defined interval of time, while currently at risk for a separate outcome, where the outcomes are not mutually exclusive and can be jointly modeled with a shared random intercept. We further define typical concurrent risk as the risk obtained by setting the random intercept to null. METHODS: Drawing data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (cohorts 2008-2013), we jointly model limitations in social activity and mobility over two years among older community-dwelling perso

Conditioned odor aversion induces social anxiety towards females in wild-type and TrpC2 knockout male mice.

Female-emitted pheromonal inputs possess an intrinsic rewarding value for conspecific males, promoting approach and investigation of the potential mating partner. In mice these inputs are detected mainly by the vomeronasal organ (VNO) and the main olfactory epithelium (MOE). We investigated the role of VNO-mediated inputs in experience-dependent plasticity of reproductive responses. We applied a sex-specific conditioned odor aversion (COA) paradigm on adult, wild-type (WT) male mice and on male mice impaired in VNO-mediated signal transduction (TrpC2-/- ). We found that WT males, which underwe

Social rhythm and mental health accounting for chronotype: Latent profiles and conditional-process pathways in adolescents and young adults.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Technological advancements have fragmented lives, disrupting biological and social rhythms. While biological rhythms (e.g., chronotype) are relatively stable, social rhythms are modifiable and intervention-ready. However, the independent impact of different social rhythms on mental health, separate from chronotype, remains unclear. METHODS: The research included two studies: a survey of 92,466 university students (mean age 19.70; 53,964 female, 38,502 male) and diagnostic interviews with 2993 elementary/middle-school students (mean age 13.79; 1934 female, 1059 male). Mu or delta opioid receptor antagonists increase the expression of social conditioned place preference in early adolescent mice.

RATIONALE: Social behaviors undergo dramatic changes during adolescence, enabling the development of adult social abilities. These changes are intricately linked to the development of the brain reward system and the activity of endogenous opioid signaling. However, the involvement of the opioid system in the development of social behaviors still raises more questions than answers. OBJECTIVES: Here, we investigated the role of the endogenous opioid system in the rewarding effects of social contact in early and late adolescent male mice. METHODS: Social reward was assessed using the social con

Cortical responses to social stimuli in infants at elevated likelihood of ASD and/or ADHD: A prospective cross-condition fNIRS study.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are highly prevalent neurodevelopmental conditions that often co-occur and present both common and distinct neurodevelopmental profiles. Studying the developmental pathways leading to the emergence of ASD and/or ADHD symptomatology is crucial in understanding neurodiversity and discovering the mechanisms that underpin it. This study used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to investigate differences in cortical specialization to social stimuli between 4- to 6-month-old infants at typical and elevated
