Burden beyond biology: Understanding stigma, social anxiety, social exclusion, and self-esteem in TB patients to identify priority groups for psychosocial intervention.

CONTEXT: Tuberculosis (TB) continues to pose a significant public health challenge globally, with India accounting for approximately 26% of the global TB burden. Beyond its biomedical implications, TB is also associated with profound psychosocial consequences that can impede treatment adherence, affect patient well-being, and delay recovery. AIM: This study examines the psychosocial, clinical, and sociodemographic factors influencing TB patients to identify priority groups for targeted psychosocial interventions. DESIGN AND METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 90 patients registe

Hidradenitis Suppurativa Reddit Support Group: Finding New Meaning in Social Media During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) can significantly impact quality of life. Reddit allows users with common interests, like HS, to form a community and share information. This has become increasingly important with pandemic-related social isolation. We administered a survey from May 2021 to July 2021 to characterize patients with HS use of Reddit and social media more broadly before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. An analysis of a popular HS support page on Reddit from January 2019 to August 2021 was also conducted, analyzing subscribers over time. The rate of subscriber increase was higher befo

Attention bias modification augments cognitive-behavioral group therapy for social anxiety disorder: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT) is a first-line treatment for social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, since many patients remain symptomatic post-treatment, there is a need for augmenting procedures. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) examined the potential augmentation effect of attention bias modification (ABM) for CBGT. METHODS: Fifty patients with SAD from three therapy groups were randomized to receive an 18-week standard CBGT with either ABM designed to shift attention away from threat (CBGT + ABM), or a placebo protocol not designed to modify threat-related at

M by Fritz Lang (Germany, 1931) Phenomenology of Evil: a serial killer and his social group.

In 1931 an unknown murderer of little girls (Peter Lorre) is terrorizing the city of Berlin. We see him entice a new victim, the little Elsie Beckmann, who is coming home from school: whistling a tune by Grieg, he buys her a balloon from a blind beggar. When her corpse is discovered, the police undertake a major mobilization aimed at seeking the serial killer in the criminal underworld; meanwhile, the ever more terrified population starts to see the dangerous murderer in everyone. Since the roundups and incursions into the seediest parts of town disturb the gangsters' activities, the leaders o

Does prior psychotherapy experience affect the course of cognitive-behavioural group therapy for social anxiety disorder?

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether and how different patterns of psychotherapy history (no prior therapy, successful therapy experience, and unsuccessful therapy experience) affect the outcome of future treatment among patients undergoing cognitive-behavioural group therapy for social anxiety disorder. METHOD: Fifty-seven patients with varying histories of psychotherapy participating in cognitive-behavioural group treatment for social anxiety disorder were included in the study. Symptom severity (including anxiety, depression, self-efficacy, and global symptom severity) was assessed at pre- and po

Social support in cyberspace: a content analysis of communication within a Huntington's disease online support group.

OBJECTIVE: Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited disorder, characterized by a progressive degeneration of the brain. Due to the nature of the symptoms, the genetic element of the disease, and the fact that there is no cure, HD patients and those in their support network often experience considerable stress and anxiety. With an expansion in Internet access, individuals affected by HD have new opportunities for information retrieval and social support. The aim of this study is to examine the provision of social support in messages posted to a HD online support group bulletin board. METHODS:

Group cognitive behavior therapy for Japanese patients with social anxiety disorder: preliminary outcomes and their predictors.

BACKGROUND: A number of studies have provided strong evidence for the use of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) in the treatment of social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, all of the previous reports were from Europe and North America and it is unknown whether Western psychological therapies are effective for SAD in non-Western cultures. The present pilot study aimed to evaluate CBT program for SAD which was originally developed for Western patients, among Japanese patients. METHODS: Fifty-seven outpatients who participated in group CBT for SAD were evaluated using eight self-reported and one c

[Short-term effects of a cognitive-behavioural group therapy in social phobia: evaluation of sixty patients].

This study analyses the short term effects of a cognitive-behavioral group therapy with 60 patients suffering from social phobia according to the diagnostic criteria of the DSM IV. The therapeutic program is based on 12 sessions of 2 hours (for 6 to 9 subjects) and includes exposure, cognitive restructuring and social skills training. The sample included 34 women and 26 men, with an average age of 34.8 years (SD=9.3). Most patients presented generalized social phobia (n=42; not generalized social phobia: n=18), and 24 received at least one comorbid axis I diagnosis. Subjects were evaluated bef

Social Integration as Mediator and Age as Moderator in Social Capital Affecting Mental Health of Internal Migrant Workers: A Multi-Group Structural Equation Modeling Approach.

The rise of migrant workers has been a unique social phenomenon as China goes through industrialization, urbanization, and modernization. They are a special social group formed during the economic and social transition of the country. Migration of rural labor has pushed China on its new path toward industrialization and urbanization. Because of the urban-rural dual system of the country, however, it is difficult for migrant workers to be fully integrated into host cities, making them susceptible to negative emotions and mental health issues. Therefore, their mental health is an issue of great …

Understanding the social needs, resources, and group participation barriers of older rural veterans: A clinician survey.

Some older veterans experience unmet social needs due to factors including poor health, restricted mobility, and living in rural settings. We surveyed 75 clinicians treating older adults (age > 60) at Veterans Affairs hospitals to (a) explore facilitators and challenges to social connection, (b) describe obstacles to offering groups, (c) determine differences in unmet social needs by rurality, and (d) assess interest in delivering a group-based intervention, Enhancing Social Function for Older Veterans with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (ESVP). Clinicians reported the percentage of their casel

Health and social care staff's experiences working with adults with complex needs - a focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity is increasing globally, affecting over one-third of the population. Adults with complex needs often experience physical, mental, and cognitive disorders, leading to increased healthcare utilization, reduced quality of life, and social challenges. The frequent co-occurrence of psychiatric conditions, substance abuse, addiction, and homelessness highlights the complexity of these needs. Collaboration between healthcare and social services is essential for delivering integrated care but is often hindered by legislative constraints and difficulties in coordinating care.

Examining an individualized, group-based social skills training using a mixed-methods design: A feasibility study.

Tailoring treatments to individual needs may be beneficial for treatment adherence and treatment effects. However, individualizing a group-based Social Skills Training (SST) may be complicated. Therefore, in this feasibility study, we examined outcomes after engagement in an individualized SST provided to 33 children aged 7-11 years (M = 9.39, SD = 1.09; 13 girls), who were referred to a mental health care center for various psychosocial problems. To analyze outcomes, we combined a top-down (including researcher-chosen measures: Questionnaires on pro-social, socially inadequate, and problem be

PROTOCOL: Group-based community interventions to support the social reintegration of marginalised adults with mental illness.

This is the protocol for a Campbell systematic review. The main objective is to explore the general efficacy of group-based community interventions aimed at supporting marginalised adults with mental illness and related problems on outcomes such as problem behaviour, subjective well-being, homelessness, poverty and employment. Furthermore, the objective is to explore the potential advantages/disadvantages of using a group-based versus an individual intervention when targeting specific problems or when using specific types of interventions.

Who Represents Our Group? The Effects of Prototype Content on Perceived Status Dispersion and Social Undermining.

Group identity may be embodied in more typical or extreme member attributes. The present research suggests that individuals' perceptions of the group identity prototype predict their beliefs about the status hierarchy and, in turn, the prevalence of social undermining behavior. Across four studies using both experimental and field data, we find that perceiving that the group prototype is focused on the ideal rather than the central tendency is associated with greater levels of perceived status dispersion and social undermining, and that perceived status dispersion mediates the relationship bet

[Frankfurt group social communication and interaction skills training for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders].

OBJECTIVE: Despite the recognition of the need for group-based training programmes for children and adolescents with autistic disorders, there are only very few specific German-speaking training programmes available. Since 2003, a structured group training programme on social skills for children and adolescents with high-functioning autism or Asperger syndrome has been developed and conducted at our department. The training programme focuses on the main deficits of those disorders. Thus, the primary goal is to improve communication and interaction skills. METHOD: Participants are children and

Lost connection? Comparing group cohesion and treatment outcomes between videoconference and in-person cognitive behavioural group therapy for social anxiety disorder and other anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: One of the most effective treatments for social anxiety disorder (SAD) is cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Prior research indicates group cohesion is connected to treatment success in group CBT for SAD (CBGT). Videoconference CBGT delivery is now common following the COVID-19 pandemic; however, research investigating treatment outcomes and group cohesion in videoconference CBGT for SAD is limited. AIMS: The present study aimed to compare group cohesion in videoconference CBGT for SAD to group cohesion in both in-person CBGT for SAD and videoconference CBGT for other anxiety an
