Barriers and Facilitators to Community-Based Physical Activity Participation Among Children and Adolescents With Developmental Disabilities in South Korea: Professionals' and Parents' Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents with developmental disabilities often encounter substantial barriers to physical activity. However, prior research has rarely provided a comprehensive understanding that integrates multiple perspectives. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with nine parents and seven sports professionals in South Korea. Data were analysed thematically using Braun and Clarke's six-phase framework. RESULTS: Identified barriers included inaccessible or poorly maintained facilities, societal stigma, insufficient instructor qualifications, fragmented administrativ

Inclusive legal education as an upstream intervention: building legal governance and capacity for health equity.

Achieving health equity requires attention not only to healthcare access and the social determinants of health, but also to the governance capacity of institutions that shape health-related policies and legal frameworks. This study explores inclusive legal education as a potential upstream intervention for building health governance capacity, focusing on how barriers in legal professional training may indirectly connect to the health equity agenda. Through a secondary qualitative analysis of publicly available narrative texts and official documents concerning 14 Chinese legal professionals wit

Mitigating the affective and cognitive consequences of social exclusion: an integrative data analysis of seven social disconnection interventions.

BACKGROUND: Being socially excluded has detrimental effects, with prolonged exclusion linked to loneliness and social isolation. Social disconnection interventions that do not require direct support actions (e.g., "how can I help?") offer promise in mitigating the affective and cognitive consequences of social exclusion. We examine how various social disconnection interventions involving friends and unknown peers might mitigate social exclusion by buffering (intervening before) and by promoting recovery (intervening after). METHODS: We present an integrative data analysis (IDA) of five studie

Social discrimination and tolerance in intergroup relations: reactions to intergroup difference.

In this article, we present a theoretical approach to social discrimination on the one hand and intergroup relations characterized by tolerance and plurality on the other hand. Central to the analysis is the question of how members deal with intergroup difference. If the outgroup's difference is judged to be non-normative and inferior, devaluation, discrimination, and hostility are likely responses toward the outgroup. Judging the outgroup's difference to be normative or positive leads to acceptance and appreciation of this group. Following self-categorization theory, the criteria being norms

A proposed AI application for enhancing the quality of life of people with disabilities in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) holds significant potential to enhance the quality of life (QoL) for individuals with disabilities by improving access to healthcare, promoting social participation, and supporting independence. In Saudi Arabia, however, there is a gap in inclusive AI models tailored to local needs, particularly in addressing the challenges faced by people with disabilities in accessing essential services. AIMS: This article proposes an AI-supported application tailored to improve key QoL dimensions such as healthcare accessibility, social inclusion, and autonomy for p…

Beyond inclusion: Why research on encounter needs a feminist account of freedom.

BACKGROUND: Though the concept of encounter promises to move the field of social inclusion beyond the dichotomy of presence and participation, new work in political theory pushes encounter in a different direction, making freedom - not inclusion - the central value at stake. METHODS: Interpretative video analysis was conducted on an online learning program "Supporting Inclusion" developed to help support workers recognise and facilitate encounters between people with intellectual disabilities and community members. FINDINGS: Using the lens of freedom in the encounter offers an alternative fr…

Letter to editor: Peer attitudes after adolescent acquired brain injury: moving from intention to real-world inclusion.

Adolescent acquired brain injury (ABI) often results in long-term social challenges, with peer acceptance playing a crucial role in psychosocial outcomes. Hills and Dunsmuir's study highlights how attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control influence adolescents' intentions to engage with peers with ABI, explaining 83% of the variance. Notably, perceived behavioral control was the strongest predictor, indicating that even positive attitudes may not translate into inclusion if engagement is perceived as difficult. Externalizing behaviors further reduce the likelihood of peer a

Feeling excluded no matter what? Bias in the processing of social participation in borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) feel ostracized even when they are included. This might be due to a biased processing of social participation in BPD. We examined whether patients with BPD also process social overinclusion in a biased manner, i.e., whether they feel ostracized even when the degree of social participation is increased. METHODS: An EEG-compatible version of Cyberball was used to investigate the effects of inclusion and overinclusion (33% vs. 45% ball receipt) on perceived ostracism, need threat and P3 amplitude, an EEG indicator for expectancy vio

Perceptions of Social Climate and Aggressive Behavior in Forensic Services: A Systematic Review.

Social climate is a term used to describe the environment of a particular setting which may influence the moods and behaviors of the people inhabiting that setting. This review explores perceptions of social climate in secure forensic services and the associations with aggression. Article searches were conducted using electronic databases, hand-searching reference lists, and contacting experts. Inclusion/exclusion criteria were applied to each study, and quality screens conducted on the remaining articles to establish those for inclusion. A total of seven studies were identified. Factors which

The link between falls, social isolation and loneliness: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The chances of experiencing a fall among those aged 60 years and older increase as risk factors accumulate. In the last few decades, several studies have identified different risk factors for falls in older people, including the role of social isolation and loneliness. This systematic review provides an overview of published literature that analyzes the bidirectional relation between falls and social isolation or loneliness. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two databases (PubMed and Europe PMC) were used to search for publications investigating the relationship between falls, social isolatio

Inclusive fitness for the conflicted individual.

The theory of inclusive fitness explains the process and purpose of social adaptation. However, the canonical derivation of inclusive fitness assumes a simple causal relationship between genotype and phenotype. In reality, different components of the genotype may have different impact upon the phenotype and different genetic relatedness to social partners, as for example in the case of parent-of-origin effects that have been implicated in the evolution of genomic imprinting and a diversity of pathological phenotypes. Whilst such scenarios may be framed in terms of a clash of inclusive-fitness

Thinking Outside the Nation: Cognitive Flexibility's Role in National Identity Inclusiveness as a Marker of Majority Group Acculturation.

In superdiverse societies like Canada, characterized by high levels of cultural and ethnic plurality, national identity boundaries are often blurry. While policies may officially promote inclusiveness, public discourse on national identity is frequently dominated by mainstream groups, whose willingness to expand these boundaries plays a crucial role in fostering minority inclusion. Despite the importance of inclusivity for social cohesion, little is known about what enables majority group members to adopt a more inclusive national identity. This study addresses this gap by exploring the role o

[Promoting participation in sports clubs: sports- and physical activity-oriented social work with people with disabilities].

Physical activity is an important resource for health, development and social participation in childhood and adolescence. For children and adolescents with disabilities, sport and movement can support motor development, psychosocial well-being, self-efficacy, and social inclusion, while also contributing to the prevention of chronic diseases and obesity. However, access to inclusive physical activity opportunities remains limited. Barriers include inaccessible facilities, insufficient transport and assistance services, a lack of low-threshold offers, and uncertainties among professionals in de…

Transitions to Sociobioeconomy in the Amazon: Governance, Business, and Sustainable Innovations.

Sociobioeconomy has gained prominence as an alternative to conventional bioeconomy by integrating biodiversity conservation, social inclusion, and the valorization of traditional knowledge. This article aims to identify the institutional and organizational elements that enable sociotechnical transitions to sociobioeconomy in the Amazon. The study adopts a qualitative and exploratory approach based on the analysis of four initiatives that reconcile nature conservation, social inclusion, and traditional knowledge: the sustainable management of pirarucu, fine cocoa and chocolate production in Tra…

Social Disadvantage and Multimorbidity Including Oral Conditions in the United States.

Existing studies on multimorbidity have largely excluded oral diseases in multimorbidity prevalence estimates. The reason behind this is somewhat unclear, as chronic oral conditions are highly prevalent, affecting over half the global population. To address this gap, we examined the relationship between social disadvantage and multimorbidity, stratifying by the inclusion and exclusion of oral conditions. For participants aged 30 y and over (n = 3,693), cross-sectional analysis was carried out using the US National Health and Nutrition Survey (2013-2014). Multimorbidity was defined as having 2

Seeing myself through the eyes of my peers: Explaining the self-concept of students with and without special educational needs through acceptance and friendship.

INTRODUCTION: Paving the way towards inclusive education, it is essential to aim for positive social outcomes for all students, including cultivating a positive self-concept and fostering acceptance and friendships with peers. Although self-concept, acceptance and friendships are interrelated, research focussing on the relationship between these constructs remains limited. METHOD: This study examined the self-concept, acceptance and friendships of two groups of typically developing students in secondary education (n = 401) and two groups of students in special secondary education with either

Reversing the negative psychological sequelae of exclusion: inclusion is ameliorative but not protective against the aversive consequences of exclusion.

Social exclusion can have devastating personal, social, and clinical consequences, but several recent studies have identified factors that can reduce its aversive impact (e.g., distraction from rumination, control over a noise). In this study, we continued to explore possible strategies for reducing the aversive experiences of being excluded. Three experiments investigated whether an experience of inclusion reduced the impact of exclusion. Specifically, participants engaged in two rounds of a computer ball toss game (Cyberball) in which they were either included or excluded. Participants were
