A Comparison of Mobile Social Media Promotion and Volunteer-Driven Strategies for Community Organizations Recruiting Men Who Have Sex with Men for HIV Testing in Zhejiang Province, China: Cross-Sectional Study Based on a Large-Scale Survey.

BACKGROUND: China has recently implemented a strategy to promote and facilitate community organization involvement in HIV prevention among men who have sex with men (MSM). Although community-based strategies have been shown to increase HIV testing uptake, the relative effectiveness of mobile social media promotion compared with volunteer-driven recruitment remains underexplored. Limited research has investigated how these strategies differentially affect MSM who have not undergone previous HIV testing. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the differences between a mobile social media promot

Intergenerational income mobility and psychotropic drug dispensation in a 1953 Stockholm cohort: a diagonal reference model approach.

The theoretical link between intergenerational social mobility and mental health has long been explored in the social sciences. Declining social mobility in high-income countries alongside rising mental health concerns have reignited interest in this research area. Sweden, while experiencing similar trends, remains a country known for its high social mobility. To investigate the relationship between social mobility and mental health, we used psychotropic drug dispensation as a proxy for mental health problems. We analyzed survey and register data of a 1953 Stockholm cohort (n = 11,199), follow…

Global sport mega-events and the politics of mobility: the case of the London 2012 Olympics.

This paper examines the politics of mobility which surrounded the London 2012 Olympics. We provide a critical discussion of the mobility conflicts, problems and criticisms which emerged from our research with local people in the Stratford and wider Newham areas of London, where most Olympic events were located. The paper is divided into four broad parts. First, we identify and discuss the relevant components of the 'mobilities paradigm' in social science which underpin our analysis. Second, we briefly outline our research methods, centring particularly on fieldwork and interviews with differen

Determinants of voluntary compliance: COVID-19 mitigation.

During the pre-vaccine period, the success of containing the spread of COVID-19 depends upon how communities respond to non-pharmaceutical mitigation policies such as social distancing, wearing of masks, retail and dining constraints, crowd limitation, and shelter-in-place orders. Of these policies, shelter-in-place and social distancing are of central importance. By using county-level mobility data as a measure of a community's voluntary compliance with social distancing policies, this study found that counties who received strong state social distancing policy directives and who had a high p

The Inevitability of Ethnocentrism Revisited: Ethnocentrism Diminishes As Mobility Increases.

Nearly all major conflicts across the globe, both current and historical, are characterized by individuals defining themselves and others by group membership. This existence of group-biased behavior (in-group favoring and out-group hostile) has been well established empirically, and has been shown to be an inevitable outcome in many evolutionary studies. Thus it is puzzling that statistics show violence and out-group conflict declining dramatically over the past few centuries of human civilization. Using evolutionary game-theoretic models, we solve this puzzle by showing for the first time tha

The detrimental effect of high mobility on long-term mental health trajectories following Hurricane Katrina.

This article uses longitudinal data from the Gulf Coast Child and Family Health Study to examine the impact of residential mobility on the long-term mental health trajectories of individuals displaced or severely impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Analyses begin with a descriptive understanding of residential mobility post-Katrina, including an explanation of who moved and how often in the 13 years after the storm, and determine which social groups were more likely to experience residential mobility than others. Secondly, it builds on these descriptive results by examining how residential mobility

Development, Implementation, and Preliminary Results of a Novel Social Network for Rare Disease Communities: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Rare diseases affect approximately 20 million Europeans, presenting unique challenges such as delayed diagnoses, limited therapies, and significant personal and financial burden. While resilience-supporting factors such as peer support are available and artificial intelligence-based diagnostic tools are being developed further, there is a lack of a dedicated online social network connecting patients, caregivers, relatives, and experts. This study presents the development and preliminary findings of Unrare.me, a novel social network designed to provide a secure space for experts and

Accumulation of disparity in physical activity in old age.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The level of physical activity often declines in old age, although many older people would like to be more active than what they are capable of. This leads to unmet physical activity need, the feeling that one's level of physical activity is inadequate, which is a manifestation of disparity in physical activity in old age. The accumulation of risk factors, including mobility limitations, low socioeconomic status (SES) and lack of social support may increase disparity in physical activity. The aim of this study was to investigate how the accumulation of risk factors is asso

Early-life impairments, chronic health conditions, and income mobility.

Individuals who have congenital conditions or become disabled early in life tend to have poorer educational and occupational outcomes than non-disabled individuals. Disability is known to be a complex entity with multiple causations, involving, inter alia, physiological, social, economic, and cultural factors. It is established that social factors can influence educational and occupational attainment for disabled people, and current disability policy in many countries, particularly in the Global North, stress the importance of equality of opportunity. However, there is a scarcity of research t

A Novel Geospatial Assistive Navigation Technology for Seamless Multimodal Mobility of Wheelchair Users.

Mobility is fundamental for social participation of people with disabilities. Unfortunately, traditional design of urban environments, including infrastructure and services are developed based largely on a standard perception of an independent, fully functional citizen without disability which limits the mobility social participation of PWD. This paper presents the design and development of a novel geospatial assistive navigation technology to support multimodal mobility of people with disabilities, especially those using manual wheelchair in urban areas.

[Mobility of older people in public spaces from a gender perspective].

For older people, a sufficient mobility offer is an essential prerequisite for participation in social life and a better quality of life. The goal should be self-determined everyday mobility that enables a satisfying and healthy life. Mobility depends on diverse individual abilities and needs. On the other hand, social structures as well as regulatory and spatial framework conditions limit the realisation of mobility services and their transport infrastructure. These framework conditions are characterised by the perception of social roles, the availability of resources and gender-specific attr

Levels and determinants of ambulatory mobility in lower-limb prosthesis users from urban and rural Cambodia: a cross-sectional survey study.

OBJECTIVES: The majority of people globally who have undergone limb amputations are living in low- and middle-income countries. For those with lower-limb amputations, ambulatory mobility with a prosthesis is considered a key factor for achieving independent living; however, little is known of determinants of mobility for prosthesis users in low- to middle-income countries. In this study, we sought to assess levels of self-reported mobility in Cambodian prosthesis users and to identify determinants associated with their ambulant mobility. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. SETTING: Three seconda
