Anticipated stigma and perceived social support among maintenance hemodialysis patients in Syria: a multicentre cross-sectional study in a conflict-affected setting.

IMPORTANCE: Stigma is a significant psychosocial challenge among patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis (HD). Evidence from conflict-affected, resource-limited settings is scarce, particularly regarding anticipated stigma, perceived social support, and site-level differences in dialysis care. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of anticipated stigma and its association with perceived social support and clinical factors among maintenance HD patients in Syria. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted from June 30 to December 4, 2025, among 50

Stigma, serostatus disclosure, coping strategies, and the role of social capital resources among HIV care-nonadherent MSM in Russia: a qualitative analysis.

The HIV epidemic continues to expand in Russia, with suboptimal levels of care uptake. This qualitative study aimed to characterize social capital resources and lived stigma experiences, coping, and disclosure among care-nonadherent men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV in Russia. Twenty-five HIV-positive MSM - recruited online - completed in-depth interviews over Zoom, with data analyzed using MAXQDA software. Stigma was more likely to be encountered in interactions with persons with whom social ties were weaker such as medical providers and relatives, particularly males. Close frie

Does Social Stigma and Neglect Post-COVID-19 Matter? A Case Report on Brief Psychotic Disorder Post-COVID-19 and Self-Quarantine.

Social stigma and neglect post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and self-quarantine can be associated with a brief psychotic disorder (BPD). A 53-year-old African-American man with no significant past medical and psychiatric history was brought to the emergency department (ED) with symptoms of persecutory delusions post COVID-19 and self-quarantine. His symptoms included false beliefs that people were plotting to kill him which made him combative at work and home. As his symptoms worsened, his wife brought him to the hospital. He was given intramuscular haloperidol 5 mg one dose in the ED.

HIV Sero-Status Non-disclosure Among HIV-Infected Opioid-Dependent Individuals: The Roles of HIV-Related Stigma, Risk Behavior, and Social Support.

HIV sero-status disclosure among people living with HIV (PLWH) is an important component of preventing HIV transmission to sexual partners. Due to various social, structural, and behavioral challenges, however, many HIV-infected opioid-dependent patients do not disclose their HIV status to all sexual partners. In this analysis, we therefore examined non-disclosure practices and correlates of non-disclosure among high-risk HIV-infected opioid-dependent individuals. HIV-infected opioid-dependent individuals who reported HIV-risk behaviors were enrolled (N = 133) and assessed for HIV disclosure,

Social isolation, social exclusion, and access to mental and tangible resources: mapping the gendered impact of tuberculosis-related stigma among men and women living with tuberculosis in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: In 2022, an estimated 10.6 million people developed tuberculosis (TB) globally, with men bearing a greater burden of disease compared to women. In South Africa specifically, men experience higher risks of poor outcomes and TB-related mortality than women. Stigma and isolation among people living with tuberculosis (PLWTB) are well documented. The gendered pathways through which TB-related stigma leads to isolation or impacts access to resources during one's illness-to-health journey are poorly understood. METHODS: We interviewed PLWTB receiving treatment at government clinics in Bu

Epilepsy in children and young people as a stigma throughout history: identifying cultural, religious and educational factors to design strategies for contemporary social inclusion.

Epilepsy ranks among the most extensively stigmatized neurological conditions in recorded history, affecting an estimated 50 million people worldwide. This paper examines the historical transformation of stigma associated with epilepsy in children, adolescents, and young adults across cultural and chronological contexts ranging from Mesopotamian antiquity to the digital present. A qualitative design was employed in which a critical narrative review of the scholarly literature furnished the basis for a historical-critical analysis of primary sources. Medical texts, religious writings, and legal

Quality of life between schizophrenia patients and family caregivers in Northern China: an actor-partner interdependence mediation model of stigma and social support.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia poses significant challenges to the lives of individuals and to society. However, limited research has explored the relationship between stigma and quality of life in both patients with schizophrenia and their family caregivers. Furthermore, the potential mediating role of social support in the association between stigma and quality of life remains underexplored in this dyadic context. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the mediating effect of social support on the relationship between stigma and quality of life in patients with schizophrenia and their family care

Perceived societal meritocratic climate and self-stigma among adolescents in conflict with the law: the mediating role of collective self-esteem and social disconnection.

INTRODUCTION: This research investigated the relationship between perceived meritocratic climate and self-stigma among adolescents in conflict with the law across two studies. METHODS: Study 1 (N = 322) employed a cross-sectional survey; Study 2 (N = 254) used an experimental manipulation of perceived (non)meritocratic climate. RESULTS: In Study 1, perceived meritocratic climate positively predicted self-stigma, and an exploratory serial mediation via collective self-esteem and social disconnection was observed. In Study 2, the serial mediation was not replicated; instead, the effect was med

Stigma and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (and additional identities) (LGBTQ+) parent socialization self-efficacy: Mediating roles of identity and community.

In the United States, cultural forces have led to the stigmatization of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (and additional identities) (LGBTQ+) parenthood. However, pushing back against this stigmatization, developing a positive LGBTQ+ identity, and investing in one's LGBTQ+ community may inform empowering narratives of future parenthood and related constructs, such as LGBTQ+ parent socialization. Perceived self-efficacy related to preparation for bias (i.e., discussions of discrimination, prejudice, or bias-based bullying) socialization is likely associated with an individual's ow

Short, animated storytelling social contact videos reduce addiction stigma in the UK, USA, and South Africa: a randomised controlled trial of 13,397 participants.

BACKGROUND: Societal stigma towards people with addiction fuels exclusion, undermines social support, and inhibits help-seeking. We evaluated a wordless, short animated storytelling (SAS) social contact video in three countries. METHODS: We conducted a three-arm, online randomised controlled trial in the UK, USA, and South Africa. Adults aged 18-49 years were recruited via Prolific Academic between July 10th and July 24th, 2025, and randomly assigned (1:1:1) to a 2 min 40 s SAS video with soundtrack, the same video without soundtrack, or an informational control delivered within the online su

Sex Work Stigma as a Partial Mediator Between Social Support and Depressive Symptoms Among Vulnerable Women Engaged in Sex Work in Southern Uganda.

Mental health is a significant challenge among women engaged in sex work (WESW), especially in low-resource settings. This study examined the mediating role of family-level and community-level sex work stigma, which is intrinsically linked to HIV, on the relationship between social support and depressive symptoms among WESW. We analyzed baseline data from the Kyaterekera study (R01MH116768), a cluster-randomized trial implemented in southern Uganda, which recruited 542 WESW aged 18-58 years. We applied a structural equation model to examine the hypothesized mediation pathway. Perceived social

Stigma, Food Insecurity, and Limited Social Support as Psychosocial Correlates of Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence Among Pregnant Women Living With HIV: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) during pregnancy is critical for maternal health and the prevention of vertical HIV transmission. In Uganda, where HIV prevalence remains high, pregnant women living with HIV face intersecting structural and psychosocial challenges, including stigma, food insecurity, and limited social support. Although each factor has been linked to ART nonadherence, less is known about how these factors co-occur within individuals and jointly shape vulnerability to nonadherence during pregnancy. OBJECTIVE: This study used latent profile analysis to ident

HIV-related stigma and self-disclosure among older people living with HIV: chain mediating roles of perceived social support and acceptance of illness.

Self-disclosure represents a pivotal challenge for older people living with HIV (PLWH) in China, who are frequently impacted by HIV-related stigma. As such, the current study aims to explore the relationship between HIV-related stigma and self-disclosure, and specifically examine the chain-mediating roles of perceived social support and acceptance of illness. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 282 older PLWH, recruited from Wuxi, China. AMOS 24.0 was used for model drawing and mediation path testing, and SPSS 26.0 was used for data analysis.
