Coping with Structural Harm: Social Support and Recent Drug Use Among Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

BACKGROUND: We argue that drug use should not be understood as a lifestyle choice, nor should it be regarded as a characteristic of individuals, but rather as a coping mechanism in response to structural harm. Accordingly, structural theories, social support theory, and constellation perspective provide a useful framework for explaining recent drug use. METHODS: Using data from the Aboriginal Peoples Survey, we conducted multivariate logistic regression analyses to examine the correlates of drug use. Variables derived from social support theory and from the constellation model were used to ex

Examining Structural and Social Drivers of Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Rates Across Clinical Settings for Youth.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States and a leading cause of cervical, anal, and oropharyngeal cancers. Despite its effectiveness in cancer prevention, HPV vaccination rates remain suboptimal. This study examines HPV vaccination initiation and completion among adolescents and young adults across clinic types, demographics, and social determinants of health (SDOH) to identify barriers and inform interventions. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional analysis using electronic health record data from adole

Social cognition profile in early Huntington disease: Insight from neuropsychological assessment and structural neuroimaging.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is traditionally associated with motor, cognitive, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Recent observations suggest that disturbances in social cognition may feature prominently in HD, potentially contributing to behavioral challenges. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the onset and neural mechanisms underlying social cognition disturbances in HD, which are not yet well understood despite increasing recognition of these symptoms. METHODS: This study compared 20 individuals in the early stages of HD with 20 healthy controls across a range of cognitive tests

Racial disparities in uterine fibroids and endometriosis: a systematic review and application of social, structural, and political context.

IMPORTANCE: Uterine fibroids and endometriosis are 2 of the leading causes of morbidity among reproductive-aged women. There are significant racial disparities in disease prevalence, incidence, age of onset, and treatment profile in fibroids. The data on endometriosis are less clear. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review of racial disparities in prevalence of uterine fibroids and endometriosis in the United States and summarize the literature on these 2 highly prevalent benign gynecologic conditions using a framework that explicitly incorporates and acknowledges the social, structural, an

Structural and functional deficits and couplings in the cortico-striato-thalamo-cerebellar circuitry in social anxiety disorder.

Although functional and structural abnormalities in brain regions involved in the neurobiology of fear and anxiety have been observed in patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD), the findings have been heterogeneous due to small sample sizes, demographic confounders, and methodological differences. Besides, multimodal neuroimaging studies on structural-functional deficits and couplings are rather scarce. Herein, we aimed to explore functional network anomalies in brain regions with structural deficits and the effects of structure-function couplings on the SAD diagnosis. High-resolution stru

Rural homelessness: how the structural and social context of small-town living influences the experience of homelessness.

OBJECTIVES: Homelessness is increasingly recognized as a crisis beyond Canada's largest cities where it is most visible, yet little is known about the experience and outcomes associated with rural homelessness. The aims of this study were to explore the experience of housing insecurity and its impact on the health of rural residents, identify the various factors contributing to homelessness in a rural Ontario context, and give voice to people with lived experience about their needs, challenges, and potential solutions to the housing crisis. METHODS: This exploratory qualitative study used int

Functional and structural social support in DSM-5 mood and anxiety disorders: A population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Social support has been found to be a key correlate of many psychiatric disorders including several mood and anxiety disorders. However, research on social support is largely investigated in individual disorders, despite the high co-occurrence of these diagnoses, and has typically relied on pre-DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. Additionally, differences in structural and functional social support are rarely explored. Thus, the present study investigated the unique association between these two aspects of social support and past-year DSM-5 mood and anxiety disorders while adjusting for com

Structural Validity of the Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised Short Form: Application to Brooding and Reflection.

Research on social problem-solving ability or the cognitive-behavioral processes used to find successful solutions to everyday problems has been advanced by the availability of easy-to-administer self-report measures. The goal of the current study is twofold: (a) validate the factor structure of the Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised: Short Form (SPSI-R:S) and (b) examine the relationship between depressive rumination subtypes and dimensions of social problem solving. An initial confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) in Sample 1 revealed poor model fit. An exploratory factor analysis reveale

Social and Structural Factors Shaping High Rates of Incarceration among Sex Workers in a Canadian Setting.

In light of the emphasis on enforcement-based approaches towards sex work, and the well-known negative impacts of these approaches on women's health, safety and well-being, we conducted a study to investigate the prevalence and correlates of recent incarceration among a cohort of women sex workers in Vancouver, Canada. Data were obtained from an open prospective community cohort of female and transgender women sex workers, known as An Evaluation of Sex Workers' Health Access (AESHA). Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses, using generalized estimating equations (GEE), were us

Social and structural barriers to housing among street-involved youth who use illicit drugs.

In Canada, approximately 150,000 youth live on the street. Street-involvement and homelessness have been associated with various health risks, including increased substance use, blood-borne infections and sexually transmitted diseases. We undertook a qualitative study to better understand the social and structural barriers street-involved youth who use illicit drugs encounter when seeking housing. We conducted 38 semi-structured interviews with street-involved youth in Vancouver, Canada from May to October 2008. Interviewees were recruited from the At-risk Youth Study (ARYS) cohort, which foll

Women and tobacco control policies: social-structural and psychosocial contributions to vulnerability to tobacco use and exposure.

This article explores the psychosocial and social-structural vulnerability in relation to women's tobacco use, smoke exposure and responses to policy, and examines these issues in the context of women's lives and roles, describing forward looking strategies that could improve research and equity in outcomes for women. Various literatures on smoking among women and girls, and how women and sub-populations of women respond to tobacco control policies are reviewed. Specific sub-populations exhibiting more tobacco use and exposure are described, such as young pregnant and mothering women and low-i

Empirical methods for the estimation of the mixing probabilities for socially structured populations from a single survey sample.

"The role of variability of sexual behavior in the transmission dynamics of HIV and AIDS has been illustrated, through the use of mathematical models, by several investigators.... In this paper we describe some practical methods for estimating the deviations from random mixing from a single survey sample.... We include a description of the role of the estimated mixing probabilities in models for the spread of HIV, a discussion of alternatives and possible extensions of the methods described in this article, and an outline of future directions of research." Social Inequality and Structural Vulnerability as Predictors of Health-Related Quality of Life: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Background Social inequality and structural vulnerability are increasingly recognized as important social determinants of health; however, longitudinal evidence regarding their impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) remains limited, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This study explored associations between social inequality, structural vulnerability, and HRQoL over a six-month follow-up period in adults in Pakistan. Methods We conducted a prospective cohort study of 600 adult participants recruited through healthcare facilities and community-based settings in Karachi,

Social and Structural Determinants of Health Impact Utilization of Emergency Surgical Services in a Regional Quality Collaborative.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency general surgery (EGS) is associated with increased morbidity. The unequal distribution of social and structural determinants of health (SSDH) may impact the need for EGS. We hypothesized that SSDH would be associated with an increased utilization of EGS and sought to evaluate the impact of SSDH on EGS utilization in a regional quality collaborative. METHODS: Patients undergoing general surgery procedures at 16 South Carolina Surgical Quality Collaborative hospitals between 08/2015 and 12/2021 were randomly selected for data abstraction and analysis. The primary outcome

[Structural and functional cardiac parameters in older adults residing in a long-term social care facility.].

The aging of the population is accompanied by an increase in the prevalence of chronic heart failure, including those with preserved ejection fraction, which necessitates the early detection of structural and functional changes in the myocardium in the elderly and senile, especially in long-term care facilities. The aim of the study was to identify the features of the structural and functional state and diastolic function of the myocardium in elderly and senile patients with various rehabilitation profiles according to transthoracic echocardiography. The study included residents of the residen

The role of artificial intelligence and bureaucracy in frugal innovation for social and environmental performance: A structuration theory approach.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has played a crucial role in decision-making within public departments. The impact of AI on the discretion exercised by public officials and bureaucrats has attracted significant scholarly attention. Despite the growing body of literature, there remains a need to explore how digital discretion and social structures shape innovation, particularly in disadvantaged communities facing resource constraints, limited accessibility, and complex societal issues. In such contexts, AI-assisted decision-making by public officials can promote frugal innovation, contributing to …

Impact of a Structured Social Skills Training Program on Adolescents and Young Adults with Level 1 Autism.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Level 1 autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by challenges in social and communication skills. Despite these difficulties, individuals with level 1 ASD often exhibit average intelligence and typical language development. Improving socialisation skills in this population requires tailored approaches that address their specific needs and include targeted strategies. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured social skills training programme for adolescents and young adults with level 1 ASD. METHODS: Participants

Synthesis of evidence yields high social cost of carbon due to structural model variation and uncertainties.

Estimating the cost to society from a ton of CO2-termed the social cost of carbon (SCC)-requires connecting a model of the climate system with a representation of the economic and social effects of changes in climate, and the aggregation of diverse, uncertain impacts across both time and space. A growing literature has examined the effect of fundamental structural elements of the models supporting SCC calculations. This work has accumulated in a piecemeal fashion, leaving their relative importance unclear. Here, we perform a comprehensive synthesis of the evidence on the SCC, combining 1,823 e
