Phytostabilization of metal contaminated soils.

The contamination of soils with heavy metals represents a worldwide environmental problem of great concern. Traditional methods for the remediation of metal contaminated soils are usually very expensive and frequently induce adverse effects on soil properties and biological activity. Consequently, biological methods of soil remediation like phytoremediation (the use of green plants to clean up contaminated sites) are currently receiving a great deal of attention. In particular, chemophytostabilization of metal contaminated soils (the use of metal tolerant plants together with different amendme…

Perchlorate retention and mobility in soils.

Adsorption and release of perchlorate in a variety of soils, minerals, and other media were studied when the solid media were exposed to low and high aqueous solutions of perchlorate salts. Low level ClO4- exposure was investigated by subjecting triplicate 5.0 g portions of a solid medium (38 different soils, minerals, or dusts) to 25 mL of an aqueous ammonium perchlorate (NH4ClO4) solution containing 670 ng mL(-1) (6.8 microM) perchlorate. This corresponds to a perchlorate-to-soil ratio of 3.4 microg g(-1) (34 nmol g(-1)). At this level of exposure, more than 90% of the perchlorate was recove…

Geochemistry, soils and cardiovascular diseases.

The hypothesis is presented that deficiencies or excesses in the content or availability of trace elements in rocks and soils, or in water flowing through them, may be a possible cause of certain chronic diseases, including cardiovascular ones. The geographic distribution of cardiovascular diseases is often associated with geochemical differences. This trend is particularly evident in the United States and in Europe, with higher rates for cardiovascular mortality in areas underlain by soils that are poor in most essential trace elements. Confirmation of this trend is found in connection with t…

Residual polyethylene film loading alters soil quality and maize productivity, with distinct bacterial communities in plastisphere soil.

Residual polyethylene (PE) film can alter soil resources and crop production, but its effects across loading levels and at the soil-film interface remain poorly resolved. In a maize field experiment established in 2011 in northwestern China, we assessed soil properties, bacterial communities, nitrogen cycling indicators, and crop performance across five PE loadings (0-600 kg ha-1). Soil firmly adhering to residual film was pooled across the four film treatments to characterize plastisphere soil. Soil quality and maize performance responded nonmonotonically to loading. Grain yield was 20% highe…

Straw addition promotes biodegradable microplastic degradation and affects soil ecosystems: A comparative study across different soil types.

Biodegradable microplastics (bio-MPs), specifically poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) microplastics (PBAT-MPs), are an emerging soil contaminant of significant concern. While straw incorporation is a common agricultural practice, the biochemical interactions between crop residues and PBAT-MPs across diverse soil habitats remain poorly understood. Specifically, it is unclear how soil texture and initial organic matter availability modulate the microbial response and subsequent plastic degradation. This study conducted a 120-day incubation experiment using loam and sandy soils to investiga…

Concentrations and ecological risk assessment of pesticide residues on soil biota in irrigated soil of Ziway, Ethiopia.

Pesticide residues in soil samples were analyzed by a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer. To evaluate the ecological risks posed to significant soil organisms, including earthworms (Eisenia fetida), springtails (Folsomia candida), and nitrogen-mineralizing microorganisms, we employed toxicity exposure ratios and risk quotients to assess potential impacts. The rank order of pesticides in soil based on their concentration was p,p'-DDE (dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene) (M ± SD; 37.48 ± 16.76 μg kg-1) > propoxur (23.94 ± 10.71 μg kg-1) > propargite (22.09 ± 9.88 μg kg-1) > α-endosulfan (11.56 ± …

Recovery of TNT from post-blast soil samples: effects of soil type, extraction methodology, and storage conditions.

Traditionally, determination of explosives and their decomposition products in soil samples involves a 24-hour ultrasonic solid-liquid extraction (SLE) using acetonitrile followed by a "salting out" liquid-liquid extraction (LLE). Alternatively, aqueous extracts of soil can undergo solid-phase extraction to isolate target analytes prior to liquid chromatography. Although well suited for environmental analysis and standardized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), these methods can be overly labor- and time-intensive for a forensic chemist working a post-blast investigation. This highli…

Soil anaerobic microsites mediate land use and precipitation effects on soil organic carbon on a regional scale.

Anaerobic microsites promote soil organic carbon (SOC) storage by shielding it from oxidative degradation. However, relationships between anaerobic microsite abundance and SOC storage in upland soils have yet to be explored on a regional scale, where variation in climate and land use co-occur. This study examines the association of a proxy for soil anaerobic volume and SOC concentration across the North American mid-continent's mean annual precipitation (MAP) gradient (478-1040 mm, ∼1.1 mm km-1) and three common land uses (native prairie, agriculture, and post-agriculture). We analyzed soil sa…

Dahongpao mother tree affects soil microbial community and nutrient cycling by increasing rhizosphere soil characteristic metabolite content.

Cuttings are an important way of propagating tea trees (Camellia sinensis). In this study, Dahongpao mother tree (MD) and cutting Dahongpao (PD) were used as research objects and their rhizosphere soil were collected and performed metabolomics analysis. At the same time, soil nutrient content, microbial physiological indexes, and microbial carbon source utilization were determined, which in turn obtained the effect of cuttings on metabolites, microorganisms, and nutrient cycling in rhizosphere soil of tea trees. The results showed that available nitrogen, available phosphorus and available pot…

Impact of iron-modified biochars on soil nitrous oxide emissions: Variations with iron salts and soil fertility.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from soils are a significant environmental concern due to their contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. Biochar has been considered as a promising soil amendment for its potential to influence soil processes. Iron modification of biochar has been extensively discussed for its ability to enhance adsorption of pollutants, yet its impact on mitigating soil N2O emissions remains poorly understood. In the present study, corn straw (CB) and wood (WB) biochars were treated with FeSO4/FeCl3 (SCB and SWB) and Fe(NO3)3 (NCB and NWB). The effects of these biochars on soil …

Body size mediates the functional potential of soil organisms by diversity and community assembly across soil aggregates.

Body size is an important life-history trait that affects organism niche occupancy and ecological interactions. However, it is still unclear to what extent the assembly process of organisms with different body sizes affects soil biogeochemical cycling processes at the aggregate level. Here, we examined the diversity and community assembly of soil microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, and protists) and microfauna (nematodes) with varying body sizes. The microbial functional potential associated with carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur metabolism within three soil aggregate sizes (large macroagg…

Biochar combined with humic acid improves the soil environment and regulate microbial communities in apple replant soil.

Apple replant disease (ARD) negatively affects plant growth and reduces yields in replanted orchards. In this study, biochar and humic acid were applied to apple replant soil. We aimed to investigate whether biochar and humic acid could promote plant growth and alleviate apple replant disease by reducing the growth of harmful soil microorganisms, changing soil microbial community structure, and improving the soil environment. This experiment included five treatments: apple replant soil (CK), apple replant soil with methyl bromide fumigation (FM), replant soil with biochar addition (2 %), repla…

Biochar derived from hydrolysis of sewage sludge influences soil properties and heavy metals distributed in the soil.

Sewage sludge contains a large number of nutrients and dangerous substances, when sludge was processed into sludge hydrochar that was added to the soil, which not only solve the problem of sludge disposal, but also amend the soil and fix pollutants in the soil. However, it was lack of report on the effect of the sludge hydrochar on soil compositions and soil microorganism community structures until now. In the present study, the hydrothermal carbonization method is used to prepare hydrochar from sewage sludge at temperatures of 180 ℃ and 240 ℃ at durations of 6 h and 15 h in this paper. The ef…

Selenium application alters soil cadmium bioavailability and reduces its accumulation in rice grown in Cd-contaminated soil.

Selenium (Se) alleviates cadmium (Cd) accumulation in several plants. Nevertheless, it is still unclear why it has such effect. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effects of Se on soil Cd bioavailability, and Cd accumulation in flooded rice plants, and to determine the mechanisms underlying these effects. Concentration of Cd and Se in different rice tissues was determined along Cd and Se concentrations in the soil solution and soil Cd fractions. Results showed that exogenous selenite and selenate treatments significantly increased rice grain Se by 4.25- and 2.39-fold and decreased Cd by…
