Altered resting-state intra- and inter- network functional connectivity in patients with persistent somatoform pain disorder.

Patients with persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD) usually experience various functional impairments in pain, emotion, and cognition, which cannot be fully explained by a physiological process or a physical disorder. However, it is still not clear for the mechanism underlying the pathogenesis of PSPD. The present study aimed to explore the intra- and inter-network functional connectivity (FC) differences between PSPD patients and healthy controls (HCs). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was performed in 13 PSPD patients and 23 age- and gender-matched HCs. We used independent c

Altered Neural Correlates of Emotion Associated Pain Processing in Persistent Somatoform Pain Disorder: An fMRI Study.

Patients with persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD) suffer from long-term pain and emotional conflicts. Recently, accumulating evidence indicated that emotion has a significant role in pain perception of somatoform pain disorder. To further understand the association between emotion and pain-related brain activities, functional activities of patients with PSPD fulfilling ICD-10 criteria and healthy controls were assessed using functional magnetic resonance imaging technology, while participants viewed a series of positive, neutral, or negative pictures with or without pinprick pain stimul

Acoustic neuroma identified after electroconvulsive therapy in a patient with recurrent major depression and undifferentiated somatoform disorder.

Little is known about the safety of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in patients with brain tumors, especially in patients with acoustic neur … diagnosed acoustic neuroma. It is suggested that for patients with refractory major depression with somatoform disorders, the threshold of suspicion for silent tumors should be lowered and pre-ECT brain imaging study should be performed, specifically when the pattern of symptoms of the central nervous system-related somatoform syndrome changes.

[A rare differential diagnosis of a somatoform autonomous disorder of the gastro-intestinal tract: the hepatocellular liver carcinoma in childhood].

OBJECTIVES: A severely ill 11-year-old boy came to the child psychiatric outpatient department of the Fachkrankenhaus Neckargemünd with the diagnosis of a somatoform disorder. Main symptoms included nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. He wished to be examined in order to enter the Stephen-Hawking-School for physically handicapped children in the town of Neckargemünd. RESULTS: Manual examination revealed a palpable mass in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, which was imaged as a tumour of the liver. During the subsequent operation, a 500 ml hepatocellular carcinoma was found.

Does addition of low-dose flupentixol enhance the analgetic effects of low-dose amitriptyline in somatoform pain disorder?

In a double-blind, crossover study, the effects of 75 mg amitriptyline alone during 5 weeks on pain intensity were compared with the effects of a combination of 75 mg amitriptyline and 3 mg flupentixol during 5 weeks in 34 patients with somatoform pain disorder. Both treatments resulted in a statistically significant reduction in pain. However, pain reduction in the combined treatment did not differ from that in the treatment with amitriptyline as a single drug. Neither tardive dyskinesias nor other serious side effects were observed. The results do not support the clinical practice of adding

Case Report: Overload of a cross-country skier in elite sports, somatoform autonomic disorder, and end-of-career support.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, sports psychiatry and psychotherapy has developed rapidly. Under the umbrella of the International Society for Sports Psychiatry (ISSP), the first international consensus statement on sports psychiatry was recently published. Fields of sports psychiatry were identified. In the field of competitive and elite sports, the end of a sports career is a vulnerable phase. The end of a sports career can lead to an increased prevalence of psychiatric symptoms and disorders. This is illustrated using the case of a cross-country skier. CASE DESCRIPTION: The interactions bet

Serum levels of glycosylated hemoglobin, insulin, total protein and their association with somatoform disorder in environmentally exposed populations in Kazakhstan.

Biochemical blood parameters may serve as biomarkers of environmental pollution, with somatoform disorder (SD) being of interest. This study examined serum glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C), insulin, total protein, and SD prevalence in populations from polluted areas in Kazakhstan. It assessed the predictive value of these parameters for SD, along with other risk factors. A cross-sectional study of 1881 individuals (ages 18-52) in Kazakhstan used the PHQ-15 questionnaire to assess SD. HbA1C was measured via immunoturbidimetry, insulin via immunoassay, and total protein via colorimetry. HbA1C lev

Role of coping with negative emotions in cognitive behavioral therapy for persistent somatoform pain disorder: Is it more important than pain catastrophizing?

AIM: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is known to be effective for patients with persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD). Improvement of negative emotions in interpersonal stressful situations has been reported to reduce PSPD-related clinical pain. However, these associations in CBT remain unclear. Therefore, we examined the relation between changes in negative emotions and clinical pain symptoms after CBT by using a multiple regression analysis that included pain catastrophizing. METHODS: We analyzed negative emotional intensity scores in stressful situations of 38 patients with PSPD wh
