The convergence of visceral and somatic afferent systems in the secondary somatosensory areas of the cat cortex was studied by means of evoked potentials. The suprathreshold stimulation of the sciatic and brachial plexus nerves depressed the test potentials evoked by the pelvic and mesenteric nerves stimulation. Maximal depression was observed at paired stimulation of visceral nerves. Comparison of the data obtained with mono- and bimodal stimulation suggests that duration of the response restoration period depends on the functional groups of neurons.

1. Drugs were applied to the cerebral cortex of rats anaesthetized with pentobarbitone and changes measured in the somatosensory primary evoked response.2. Computer-derived averages of thirty-two consecutive responses yielded stable and consistent measurements of the potential changes comprising the evoked response, and comparable records from the opposite (non-drug treated) cortex provided an essential control for systemic actions of the drug.3. The modifications produced by curare and strychnine were indistinguishable. The first positive wave (peak latency 7 msec) was unaltered; the second p

Tactile fingertip sensations are critical for everyday life. Accordingly, tactile fingertip maps have been extensively studied in human primary somatosensory cortex. However, the fine-grained functional architecture of these maps remains largely unknown. To uncover this architecture, we sought to estimate 2D spatio-tactile population receptive fields (pRFs) of the tip of the index finger in human Brodmann area 3b (BA3b). Using functional magnetic resonance imaging at 7T and submillimeter resolution along with prospective motion correction, we recorded brain responses while participants sensed …

The brain's representation of hand position is critical for voluntary movement. Representation is multisensory, combining visual and proprioceptive cues. When these cues conflict, the brain recalibrates its unimodal estimates, shifting them closer together to compensate. Converging evidence from research in perception, behavior, and neurophysiology suggest that such updates to body representation are communicated to the motor system to keep hand movements accurate. We hypothesized that primary somatosensory cortex (SI) is crucial in this updating process due to its role in proprioception and c…

IMPORTANCE: Unexplained chronic cough is common and has substantial negative quality-of-life implications, yet its causes are not well understood. A better understanding of how peripheral and central neural processes contribute to chronic cough is essential for treatment design.
OBJECTIVE: To determine if people with chronic cough exhibit signs of abnormal neural processing over laryngeal sensorimotor cortex during voluntary laryngeal motor activity such as vocalization.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a cross-sectional study of a convenience sample of participants with chronic c

While the significance of auditory cortical regions for the development and maintenance of speech motor coordination is well established, the contribution of somatosensory brain areas to learned vocalizations such as singing is less well understood. To address these mechanisms, we applied intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS), a facilitatory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) protocol, over right somatosensory larynx cortex (S1) and a nonvocal dorsal S1 control area in participants without singing experience. A pitch-matching singing task was performed before and after i

The immediate effect of changing the driving cutaneous input to locations within primary somatosensory cortex (SI) was examined by denervating one or more digits of the rat hindpaw by amputation or local anesthesia. When all or part of a receptive field of a cluster of neurons was denervated, it was found that the cortical location recorded from gained responsiveness to cutaneous stimulation of hindpaw areas bordering the denervated region. In 22 of the 29 animals studied this expansion took place within 5 min of the denervation.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can lead to long-lasting cognitive deficits in the human brain, with a considerable contribution of secondary morphological and functional sequela in cortical regions distant to the lesion site. In order to uncover the role of early functional alterations in parvalbumin-positive basket cells (PV-BCs), an interneuron population required to maintain inhibition of neocortical circuits, to this dysfunctional plasticity, we investigated anatomical and electrophysiological properties of PV-BCs in PV-IRES-Cre-tdTomato mice of both sexes 24 h after a cortical impact. Tactile feedback from brain-controlled bionic hands can be partially restored via intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of the primary somatosensory cortex. In ICMS, the location of percepts depends on the electrode's location and the percept intensity depends on the stimulation frequency and amplitude. Sensors on a bionic hand can thus be linked to somatotopically appropriate electrodes, and the contact force of each sensor can be used to determine the amplitude of a stimulus. Here we report a systematic investigation of the localization and intensity of ICMS-evoked percepts in three particip…

1. Reorganizations of representational maps have been described for a variety of sensory and motor regions of cerebral neocortex in several species. The purpose of this study was to investigate synaptic mechanisms of the reorganizations of primary somatosensory cortex that follow removal of a digit or the joining of two digits into a syndactyly. We examined neurons in the cortical representation of digit 4 (d4). Intracellular recording was used to compare somatosensory and corticocortical excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) in normal raccoons, with EPSPs recorded in two experimental gro…

Previously reported abnormalities in PIFP as a dishabituation of the R2 component of the blink reflex and psychiatric disturbances were co-evaluated. Psychiatric evaluation inc…

To understand neocortical function, it is helpful to define cortical cell types. Recent studies indicate that neurons in the deepest cortical layer play roles in mediating thalamocortical interactions and modulating brain state and are implicated in neuropsychiatric disease. However, understanding the functions of deep layer 6 (layer 6b [L6b]) neurons has been hampered by the lack of agreed-upon definitions for these neuron types. We compared commonly used methods for defining L6b neurons, including molecular, transcriptional, and morphological approaches and transgenic mouse lines, and identi

Recent literature suggests that the primary somatosensory cortex (S1), once thought to be a low-level area only modality-specific, is also involved in higher-level, cross-modal, cognitive functions. In particular, electrophysiological studies have highlighted that the cross-modal activation of this area may also extend to visual Working Memory (WM), being part of a mnemonic network specific for the temporary storage and manipulation of visual information concerning bodies and body-related actions. However, the causal recruitment of S1 in the WM network remains speculation. In the present study…

The fingertip somatotopy in BA1 and BA3b of monkeys exhibits characteristic differences with a more discrete separation of the body parts in BA3b and a continuous orientation column-like structure in BA1. We present evidence for similar differences in the human somatotopy using BOLD fMRI for the investigations. Though the variability between the individual maps was large, we found a group-wide somatotopic representation in BA3b and BA1. The variability due to anatomical differences was small in our sample. This was demonstrated by comparing exact shortest distances in the individual brains and
