Quantifying repetitive speech in autism spectrum disorders and language impairment.

We report on an automatic technique for quantifying two types of repetitive speech: repetitions of what the child says him/herself (self-repeats) and of what is uttered by an interlocutor (echolalia). We apply this technique to a sample of 111 children between the ages of four and eight: 42 typically developing children (TD), 19 children with specific language impairment (SLI), 25 children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) plus language impairment (ALI), and 25 children with ASD with normal, non-impaired language (ALN). The results indicate robust differences in echolalia between the TD and

Telerehabilitation, virtual therapists, and acquired neurologic speech and language disorders.

Telerehabilitation (telerehab) offers cost-effective services that potentially can improve access to care for those with acquired neurologic communication disorders. However, regulatory issues including licensure, reimbursement, and threats to privacy and confidentiality hinder the routine implementation of telerehab services into the clinical setting. Despite these barriers, rapid technological advances and a growing body of research regarding the use of telerehab applications support its use. This article reviews the evidence related to acquired neurologic speech and language disorders in ad

Prediction of pathology in primary progressive language and speech disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) encompasses a variety of clinicopathologic entities. The antemortem prediction of the underlying pathologic lesions is reputed to be difficult. This study sought to characterize correlations between 1) the different clinical variants of primary progressive language and speech disorders and 2) the pathologic diagnosis. METHODS: The latter was available for 18 patients having been prospectively monitored in the Lille Memory Clinic (France) between 1993 and 2008. RESULTS: The patients were diagnosed with progressive anarthria (n = 5), agrammat…

Academic outcomes in children with histories of speech sound disorders.

Tests of phonology, semantics, and syntax were administered to 52 preschool children (19 girls and 33 boys, age 4-6 years) with moderate to severe speech sound disorders. The children's performance on these tests was used to predict language, reading, and spelling abilities at school age (age 8-11 years). Language impairment at school age was related to poor performance on preschool tests of syntax and nonsense word repetition, while reading impairment was predicted by poor performance in all preschool test domains (phonology, semantics, and syntax). In contrast, spelling impairment was predic

Motor disorders of voice and speech in Reye's syndrome survivors.

Disorders of voice and speech were studied in 43 survivors of Reye's syndrome (RS). During hospital convalescence 26 (60%) of 43 were aphonic, hoarse, or had other alterations of speech production. These disorders occurred in those patients with the worst severity of RS. Four patients (9% of survivors) had a persistent motor voice or speech disorder at follow-up examination 1 1/2 to five years after recovery. All of the patients have breathy, low-intensity voice quality, whereas three of the four exhibit rapid and slurred speech. These four children have no difficulty with the symbolic aspects

[The localizing value of speech disorders in transitory cerebral ischemia].

Clinical and angiographic findings in 30 patients who had suffered from a dysphasic disorder in the course of transient cerebral ischaemia were reviewed and compared with the findings in patients with permanent aphasia or dysarthria. The results of angiography differed significantly from those of the aphasic patients and were similar to those of the patients with dysarthria: in nearly 60% of the patients with transient dysphasia angiography showed no abnormality, whilst only 23% of the patients had lesions in the left carotid or middle cerebral artery. In the cases where the other neurological

Do Adult Naïve Listeners Perceive Differences in Speech Before and After Therapy for Cleft Palate Speech Disorders? A Reliability Study of Perceptual Speech Ratings.

PURPOSE: This study compared the interrater reliability of adult naïve listeners' perceptual assessments of different speech variables in children with a cleft palate with or without a cleft lip (CP ± L). In addition, the study investigated whether the listeners were able to perceive differences in these speech variables before and after speech therapy for cleft palate speech disorders. METHOD: Thirty-four speech samples of 14 children with a CP ± L (14 samples collected immediately before 10 hr of speech intervention, 14 samples collected immediately after speech intervention, and six random…

[Language and speech disorders in preschool children and possibilities for rehabilitation--frequent ear-nose-throat findings that may be responsible for language and speech disorders].

Speech disorders in preschool children generally have to be treated by speech therapy with continuing support of the parents. Depending on the severity and cause of the disorder supplementary therapeutic interventions in specialised institutions or individual psychotherapy may be necessary in addition to speech therapy. Careful differential diagnosis before starting any specific therapy is mandatory.

Automated Assessment of Word- and Sentence-Level Speech Intelligibility in Developmental Motor Speech Disorders: A Cross-Linguistic Investigation.

Background/Objectives: Accurate assessment of speech intelligibility is necessary for individuals with motor speech disorders. Transcription or scaled rating methods by naïve listeners are the most reliable tasks for these purposes; however, they are often resource-intensive and time-consuming within clinical contexts. Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems, which transcribe speech into text, have been increasingly utilized for assessing speech intelligibility. This study investigates the feasibility of using an open-source ASR system to assess speech intelligibility in Hebrew and English …

Exploring perception of coarticulatory cues in childhood apraxia of speech and residual speech sound disorders: A pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) exhibit speech production deficits beyond segmental errors, including atypical coarticulation. Broadly, children with speech sound disorders (SSD) also exhibit weaknesses in speech perception, which may directly relate to specific production difficulties. This study examined differences in categorical perception among children with CAS, residual SSD affecting /ɹ/ (rSSD), and typical speech (TD). We hypothesized that children with CAS would demonstrate weaker performance on a task requiring perception of coarticulatory cues-a definin

Protocol for a Systematic Review of Interventions Not Delivered by Speech and Language Therapists for Children With Speech Sound Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Children with speech sound disorders (SSDs) of unknown origin usually need high-intensity speech intervention delivered by a speech and language therapist (SLT) and there is a rich evidence base focusing on these interventions. However, access to direct SLT services can be challenging, leaving many children with no timely support. To date there is no systematic review of possible interventions for children with SSD of unknown origin that do not require direct SLT input. AIMS: To describe a protocol for a systematic review of non-SLT-delivered interventions for children with SSD of

Long-Term Speech Outcomes in Moderate-to-Severe Childhood Speech Sound Disorder: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Parents of children with moderate-to-severe speech sound disorder presenting to clinic want to understand prognosis for their child; however, there is unclear evidence as to the specific long-term speech outcomes in this group. AIM: To review long-term speech outcomes in children with moderate-to-severe speech sound disorders. METHOD: A systematic review identified 3697 papers; 21 papers containing 15 unique studies (six had overlapping data) met inclusion criteria for moderate-to-severe speech sound disorder with at least one follow-up speech assessment unrelated to intervention

The agreement of phonetic transcriptions between paediatric speech and language therapists transcribing a disordered speech sample.

BACKGROUND: Speech and language therapists (SLTs) regularly use phonetic transcription to record and analyse typical and disordered speech. Phonetic transcription is highly demanding of auditory perceptual skills so researchers are sceptical about its accuracy and reliability. The literature describes how phonetic transcription is prone to auditory illusions and biases, such as a preference to transcribe speech sounds from the transcriber's own language. Few empirical research studies have calculated agreement amongst transcribers where a range of agreement scores have been reported (51%-97%).

A survey of interventions used by speech-language pathologists for children with speech sound disorders in the Middle East.

PURPOSE: While many examples of speech pathology intervention approaches for children with speech sound disorders (SSDs) exist in English and some other European languages, approaches with children in other languages are largely unknown. The aim was to determine current speech-language pathologists (SLPs) intervention practices with children with SSDs in the ME, and to then compare these with international practices. METHODS: Data were collected by online questionnaire using Qualtrics. One hundred and eighty-nine SLPs completed the survey. Participants were required to be Arabic first languag

Neural Changes in Children With Residual Speech Sound Disorder After Ultrasound Biofeedback Speech Therapy.

PURPOSE: Children with residual speech sound disorders (RSSD) have shown differences in neural function for speech production, as compared to their typical peers; however, information about how these differences may change over time and relative to speech therapy is needed. To address this gap, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine functional activation and connectivity on adaptations of the syllable repetition task (SRT-Early Sounds and SRT-Late Sounds) in children with RSSD before and after a speech therapy program. METHOD: Sixteen children with RSSD completed an f
