Ultrasound-guided decompression of the spinal canal in traumatic stenosis.

The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of ultrasound (US)-guided decompression of the myelon in the surgical treatment of spinal fractures. Intraoperative ultrasonography was performed in 22 patients with traumatic stenosis of the spinal canal during spinal cord surgery with removal of retropulsed bony fragments. US imaging requires a posterior approach and an enlarged foramen interarcuale. The posterior vertebral facet and the myelon can accurately be distinguished from small bony fragments by ultrasonography. Pre- and postoperative computed tomography was compared with intraop…

Spinal canal stenosis at the level of the atlas: case report.

We describe a rare case of cervical canal stenosis at the level of the atlas, presenting with cervical myelopathy as an initial symptom. A 55-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a 4-month history of gait disturbance and clumsiness in both hands. He had no history of trauma, and showed left-sided hemihyperesthesia and mild quadriplegia with exaggerated deep tendon reflexes. Plain cervical tomography revealed marked spinal canal stenosis, with the diameter of 8.0 mm at the level of the atlas. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated severe compression of the spinal cord at the atlas, w…

Stenosis of the lumbar spinal canal in vertebral ankylosing hyperostosis.

Certain morphologic features frequently observed in radiography or computed tomography (CT) scan in patients with hyperostosis led us to study the association between a narrowed spinal canal and vertebral hyperostosis. Twenty-eight items were selected and studied by three different investigators (two rheumatologists and one radiologist) in radiographs and CT scans of 100 patients with acquired stenosis of the lumbar canal, with or without hyperostosis (46 and 54 cases, respectively). The most distinctive points that we suggest can be used as diagnostic criteria of the hyperostotic narrowed lum…

Sway of the center of gravity in patients with spinal canal stenosis.

In this study the sway of the center of gravity was observed in patients with spinal canal stenosis, in order to observe the movement of the center of the gravity after the onset of claudication. In normal subjects the sway of the center of gravity was restricted to a small area, but in patients with spinal stenosis, the center of gravity was diverted to the left or right side. With claudication, the center of gravity moved forward. Following several rest periods, the center of gravity returned to the initial area. The time required to return to the initial area was longer than for a patient's…

[Sagittal widths of the cervical spinal canal in the computerized tomogram].

The sagittal diameter of cervical spinal canals provided in radiological and anatomical literature cannot be used for the computertomographical diagnostics. Values measured by CT are lower than widths determined by other methods. Resulting from its high sensitivity computertomography detects even slight mineralisations and ossifications that cannot be seen on conventional X-ray pictures. CT is therefore the most suitable X-ray method for the diagnosis of stenosed cervical spinal canals.

Quantitative analysis of the cervical spinal canal by computed tomography.

Computed tomography measurements of the AP diameter, width, and cross-sectional area of the bony cervical canal were derived from cervical spine examinations of fifty-two normal adults. These quantitative parameters were then used to evaluate 80 patients with various cervical abnormalities to determine the clinical usefulness of the measurements. With the exception of spinal stenosis, quantitative cervical canal analysis was found to be of limited usefulness since normal measurements frequently occurred in the presence of significant cervical pathology.

Cheirolumbar dysostosis and constitutional narrowness of the cervical spinal canal.

In this paper we describe the second case of cheirolumbar dysostosis associated with constitutional narrowness of the cervical spinal canal. This case is the 32nd case of cheirolumbar dysostosis described in the literature. Cheirolumbar dysostosis is not a rare dysostosis and may occur in association with various anomalies.

Histological features of congenital lipomas of the lower spinal canal.

A study of 20 children with lipomyelomeningocele and two with intradural lipoma who underwent surgery revealed that five children had unusual and previously unreported histological findings. In each, the characteristic densely fibrous lipoma was present. One patient with an intradural lipoma had an ependymal-lined canal resembling a terminal ventricle. The subependymal layer was neuroglial and striated muscle fibers were scattered throughout adjacent connective tissue and lipoma. Three other children presented with lipomyelomeningoceles. In each case, the lipoma tapered to a firm fibrous tract

Quantitative assessment of the lumbar spinal canal by computed tomography.

An experimentally validated simple standardized method for making precise measurements of the spinal canal directly from the video display of a CT scanner is described. Using this method, normal values for anteroposterior diameter, interpediculate distance, and cross-sectional area of the lumbar spinal canal have been determined in a series of 60 adults. A careful study of canal configuration combined with the prudent use of the normal values should allow the CT diagnosis of lumbar spinal stenosis to be made with a high level of confidence.

A Rare Case of Cysticercosis Involving the Whole Spinal Canal.

BACKGROUND: Cysticercosis is the commonest parasitic disease to affect the central nervous system (CNS). However, cysticercosis affecting the spine is extremely rare. We reported a rare case of cysticercosis involving the whole spinal canal in China. CASE PRESENTATION: A rare case of cysticercosis involving the entire spinal cord, in a 52-year-old Chinese man, was detected in 2021. Epidemiological investigation, clinical and etiological examination was performed. CONCLUSION: Since spinal cysticercosis is a rare but potentially life-threatening disease, clinicians should always consider the d…
