Effect of barodenervation on cardiovascular responses elicited from the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus of the rat.

We have previously reported that chemical stimulation of the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARCN) in the rat elicited increases as well as decreases in blood pressure (BP) and sympathetic nerve activity (SNA). The type of response elicited from the ARCN (i.e., increase or decrease in BP and SNA) depended on the level of baroreceptor activity which, in turn, was determined by baseline BP in rats with intact baroreceptors. Based on this information, it was hypothesized that baroreceptor unloading may play a role in the type of response elicited from the ARCN. Therefore, the effect of barodenervat

Neuromodulation in multiple sclerosis.

Neuromodulation, or the utilization of advanced technology for targeted electrical or chemical neuronal stimulation or inhibition, has been expanding in several neurological subspecialties. In the past decades, immune-modulating therapy has been the main focus of multiple sclerosis (MS) research with little attention to neuromodulation. However, with the recent advances in disease-modifying therapies, it is time to shift the focus of MS research to neuromodulation and restoration of function as with other neurological subspecialties. Preliminary research supports the value of intrathecal baclo

Role of the Cholinergic Anti-Inflammatory Reflex in Central Nervous System Diseases.

In several central nervous system diseases, it has been reported that inflammation may be related to the etiologic process, therefore, therapeutic strategies are being implemented to control inflammation. As the nervous system and the immune system maintain close bidirectional communication in physiological and pathological conditions, the modulation of inflammation through the cholinergic anti-inflammatory reflex has been proposed. In this review, we summarized the evidence supporting chemical stimulation with cholinergic agonists and vagus nerve stimulation as therapeutic strategies in the t

Functional Measurement of Respiratory Muscle Motor Behaviors Using Transdiaphragmatic Pressure.

The diaphragm muscle must be able to generate sufficient forces to accomplish a range of ventilatory and non-ventilatory behaviors throughout life. Measurements of transdiaphragmatic pressure (Pdi) can be conducted during eupnea, hypoxia (10 % O2)-hypercapnia (5 % CO2), chemical airway stimulation (i.e., sneezing), spontaneously occurring deep breaths (i.e., sighs), sustained airway or tracheal occlusion, and maximal efforts elicited via bilateral phrenic nerve stimulation, representing the full range of motor behaviors available by the diaphragm muscle. We provide detailed methods on the in v

Mechanosensitive pelvic nerve afferent fibers innervating the colon of the rat are polymodal in character.

This report describes the chemical and thermal sensitivity of mechanosensitive pelvic nerve afferent fibers innervating the colon of the rat. A total of 51 fibers in the S1 dorsal root, identified by electrical stimulation of the pelvic nerve, were studied. An approximately 7 cm length of descending colon was isolated in situ to permit intracolonic perfusion and distension with Krebs solution. Reproducibility of responses to repetitive colorectal distension (CRD, 40 mmHg, 30 s, every 4 min) was documented. All fibers gave monotonic, incrementing responses to graded CRD (5 to 60 mmHg). Increase

Behavioural phase change in the Australian plague locust, Chortoicetes terminifera, is triggered by tactile stimulation of the antennae.

Density-dependent phase polyphenism is a defining characteristic of the paraphyletic group of acridid grasshoppers known as locusts. The cues and mechanisms associated with crowding that induce behavioural gregarization are best understood in the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, and involve a combination of sensory inputs from the head (visual and olfactory) and mechanostimulation of the hind legs, acting via a transient increase in serotonin in the thoracic ganglia. Since behavioural gregarization has apparently arisen independently multiple times within the Acrididae, the important ques

[Low-intensity helium-neon laser irradiation in multimodal treatment of corneal injuries].

He-Ne laser stimulation was used in multiple-modality treatment of 512 patients with various corneal conditions: 217 with perforating wounds, 75 with chemical and thermal burns, 48 with ulcers of various origins, and 162 with endothelial-epithelial dystrophy resulting from cataract extraction with implantation of the intraocular lens. A course of treatment consisted of 6 to 10 daily 3 min exposures at radiation power density of 50-100 micro W/cm2 on the cornea. The effect achieved by laser stimulation was significantly superior to that of routine methods of treatment used in the reference grou

Real time precisely tracing the fluctuations of mitochondrial SO2 in cells during ferroptosis and tissues using a mitochondrial-immobilized ratiometric fluorescent probe.

Mitochondrial sulfur dioxide (SO2) plays important roles in physiological and pathological activities. Unfortunately, it is lack of a reliable tool to precisely visualize the mitochondrial SO2 and elaborate its complicated functions in various cytoactivities. Here we report a mitochondrial-immobilized fluorescent probe PM-Cl consisting of coumarin and benzyl chloride modified benzothiazole, which enables selective visualization of mitochondrial SO2via chemical immobilization. The spectral results demonstrated that probe PM-Cl could respond to SO2 with high selectivity and sensitivity. Co-local

Chemical exposures and Parkinson's disease in residents of three Negev kibbutzim.

We consider whether chemical pollutants in drinking water (including aromatic hydrocarbons, alkanes, halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons, and phthalic acid) or used occupationally in agriculture that have shown no parkinsonism-inducing effect may be responsible for excess cases of Parkinson's disease (PD) in three adjacent kibbutzim in southern Israel (Negev). Literature data on PD pathogenesis have been compared with common pathogenetic pathways to xenobiotics effects; the following neurotoxic mechanisms, besides individual sensitivity, have been suggested: (1) impairment of the protective rol

Effect of chronic tobacco-betel-lime "quid" chewing on human salivary secretions.

Salivary flow rates by mechanical stimulation with forced spitting method and by chemical stimulation with 10% citric acid were determined in 25 healthy adult subjects with a history of chronic tobacco-betel-lime "quid" chewing and in 25 healthy control adults with no history of chewing. The chewers secreted more saliva as compared to nonchewers on chemical, but not on mechanical stimulation. The salivary amylase, potassium, and sodium levels were lower in chewers, but the reductions of the first two components only were significant. These reductions were thought to be due to increased salivar

Respiratory sensations evoked by activation of bronchopulmonary C-fibers.

C-fibers represent the majority of vagal afferents innervating the airways and lung, and can be activated by inhaled chemical irritants and certain endogenous substances. Stimulation of bronchopulmonary C-fibers with selective chemical activators by either inhalation or intravenous injection evokes irritation, burning and choking sensations in the throat, neck and upper chest (mid-sternum region) in healthy human subjects. These irritating sensations are often accompanied by bouts of coughs either during inhalation challenge or when a higher dose of the chemical activator is administered by in

Stimulating Central Carbon Metabolism to Re-sensitize Pseudomonas aeruginosa to Aminoglycosides.

In this issue of Cell Chemical Biology, Meylan et al. (2017) examine how stimulation of central carbon metabolism of Pseudomonas aeruginosa modulates aminoglycoside lethality in tolerant bacteria. They identify fumarate as a tobramycin potentiator that stimulates proton motive force-dependent drug uptake and increases respiration-dependent killing.

[Central Asiatic black scorpion venom protect Mauthner neurons from the damaging action of prolonged stimulation].

The effect of long-term natural stimulation resulting in prolonged fatigue and structural disorders as well as the black scorpion poison influence on these processes were studied in gold fish Mauthner neurons (MN). The poison previously applied to MN significantly protects their function and structure from the stimulatory effect and subsequently allows the neurons to recover more fast. Appearance of numerous desmosome-like (actin-containing) contacts and proliferation of subsurface cisterns, the accumulators of calcium ions was noted immediately after the poison action and stimulation and one

Influence of intrathoracic vagotomy on the cough reflex in the anesthetized cat.

Recurrent laryngeal afferent fibers are primarily responsible for cough in response to mechanical or chemical stimulation of the upper trachea and larynx in the guinea pig. Lower airway slowly adapting receptors have been proposed to have a permissive effect on the cough reflex. We hypothesized that vagotomy below the recurrent laryngeal nerve branch would depress mechanically or chemically induced cough. In anesthetized, bilaterally thoracotomized, artificially ventilated cats, thoracic vagotomy nearly eliminated cough induced by mechanical stimulation of the intrathoracic airway, significant

Apnea following hyperventilation in man.

To assess the incidence of posthyperventilation apnea (PHA), breathing patterns after active voluntary hyperventilation were determined during EEG recording by means of: (1) a thermocouple in 1060 patients; (2) a pneumotachograph coupled with a capnograph in 100 further patients. All the patients were randomly chosen. PHA of 12.6 +/- 0.48 occurred in only 18% of awake subjects and was not related to the magnitude of the lowering of end-tidal FECO2 during the test. PHA frequency increased when sleep followed hyperventilation and in patients with clinical or EEG evidence of cerebral pathology an

Inhibition and stimulation of prolactin release. Delayed response in duodenal ulcer patients.

Prolactin inhibitory tests (bromocriptine in a single dose 2.5 mg orally) as well as stimulatory tests (metoclopramide in a single dose of 10 mg intravenously) were performed in 33 patients with endoscopically proven duodenal ulcer and in 32 healthy volunteers. Delayed response in inhibition of prolactin release as well as in stimulation of prolactin release was observed in duodenal ulcer patients compared to healthy volunteers (P < 0.01). The results implicate the role of the dopamine-prolactin axis in the pathogenesis of duodenal ulcer disease.

Infrared light excites cells by changing their electrical capacitance.

Optical stimulation has enabled important advances in the study of brain function and other biological processes, and holds promise for medical applications ranging from hearing restoration to cardiac pace making. In particular, pulsed laser stimulation using infrared wavelengths >1.5 μm has therapeutic potential based on its ability to directly stimulate nerves and muscles without any genetic or chemical pre-treatment. However, the mechanism of infrared stimulation has been a mystery, hindering its path to the clinic. Here we show that infrared light excites cells through a novel, highly gene

Cytokine regulation of chemical sensitization.

The skin is an immunologically active tissue. Epidermal cells, both keratinocytes and Langerhans cells (LC), produce constitutively or can be stimulated to produce a variety of cytokines, many of which play important roles in the induction and regulation of allergic responses to sensitizing chemicals. Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) provides the signal for LC migration from the skin and granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), interleukin 1 (IL-1) and other cytokines effect the functional maturation of LC and their acquisition of immunostimulatory potential. The initi
