Gastric volvulus is an abnormal rotation of the stomach. The incidence seems to be equal for men and women, and all ages are represented. Gastric volvulus may present as an emergency or as a chronic condition. Acute volvulus is potentially lethal if unrecognized, while a chronic volvulus may cause symptoms for years if not treated. Gastric volvulus may be more common than previously estimated. Approximately 700 cases have thus far been documented. Two case reports of chronic gastric volvulus are presented, of which one was treated by laparoscopic surgery.

Campylobacter jejuni is the commonest cause of acute bacterial enteritis in the UK. However, in this case a 74-year-old lady underwent gastroscopy for an upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage and was noted to have a gastric ulcer. Gastric biopsy revealed spiral gram-negative bacteria and culture yielded a moderate growth of C. jejuni. Identification was confirmed by growth characteristics, biochemical tests and PCR amplification of the species-specific flagellin gene--fla A. Six children, aged upto one year, with volvulus of the stomach are reported. Vomiting and regurgitation of feeds were the main presenting symptoms. Eventration of the left hemidiaphragm was present in four cases. Barium meal confirmed the diagnosis. Five cases were operated on through an abdominal approach. Plication of the diaphragm (3 cases), colonic displacement (2) and gastrostomy (3) were resorted to. One child needed reoperation for a missed Ladd's band. There was no operative mortality.

Problems in the distinction between gastritis and gastric cancer on CT and the evaluation of cancer on endoscopic ultrasonography have been highlighted. Involvement of the gastrointestinal tract is rare in varicella. We report a previously healthy young girl with perforation of the stomach that appeared to be a complication of varicella. Varicella inclusion bodies were demonstrated at the site of gastric perforations. On surgery, an organoaxial volvulus of the stomach was demonstrated.

An X-ray contrast medium examination revealed extensive polyposis in the gastric fundus of a 66-year-old patient with intermittent heartburn. Physical examination and laboratory tests including carcinoembryonal antigen yielded no abnormal findings. An acute gastric volvulus calls for an urgent operation, while a chronic volvulus can be indicated for operation only after a careful clinical and paraclinical examination which rules out other causes of the symptoms. The authors describe a case of secondary gastric volvulus successfully treated by a causal surgical operation involving elimination of adhesions without gastropexy.

The protruded mass with central depression resembled a submucosal tumor, located on the posterior wall of a part of the cardia, fornix, and upper corpus. Twenty-five angiodysplasias in the stomach and duodenum were identified with endoscopy in 12 patients. The average age of the patients was 70 years. Two patients had aortic stenosis. Six of the patients were treated with electrocoagulation, three of whom required surgery. Angiodysplasia of the upper gastrointestinal tract is considered to be more common than previously thought and an important cause of both obscure and overt bleeding.
