Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a systemic disorder: Pathways to cardiovascular disease.

Evidence indicates that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a significant risk factor for the development and progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Most explanations for PTSD-CVD associations conceptualize PTSD as a stress-related mental health disorder that elicits physiological, behavioral, and psychological responses that are causal factors in the development of cardiovascular disorders. This article reviews evidence for the broader physical health consequences of PTSD, and presents a conceptual model based on research suggesting that PTSD is a systemic disorder. Specifically, r

Psychological therapies for post-traumatic stress disorder and comorbid substance use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating mental health disorder that may develop after exposure to traumatic events. Substance use disorder (SUD) is a behavioural disorder in which the use of one or more substances is associated with heightened levels of distress, clinically significant impairment of functioning, or both. PTSD and SUD frequently occur together. The comorbidity is widely recognised as being difficult to treat and is associated with poorer treatment completion and poorer outcomes than for either condition alone. Several psychological therapies have bee

[Prevalence and impact of post-traumatic stress disorder in a disordered eating population sample].

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders (ED) are associated with a higher prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the impact they may have on the clinical features and severity of the ED remains unknown. In this study, we assessed the prevalence and the impact of PTSD in a disordered eating population sample. METHODS: We recruited patients with eating disorders during a period of 6 months, in 2014. The patients underwent a semistructured diagnostic interview by trained psychiatrists. The severity of eating behaviours and PTSD was assessed using the Eating Disorder Inventory 2 and th

Hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis in patients with post-traumatic stress disorders and related to oxidative stress.

OBJECTIVES: The study involves the effect of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal hormones disorders, and related to oxidative stress in individuals with PTSD to those in the healthy group after they experience a specific event that results in a congenital illness or limb loss. METHODS: Obtaining serum samples from males exclusively in cases where psychiatrists have determined that the men have experienced psychological damage brought on by a particular tragedy, and testing the men for hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis and oxidative stress parameters in comparison to healthy participants. RESULT

Post-Traumatic Stress and Stressor-Related Disorders in Hematological Malignancies: A Review.

Background: Patients with hematological malignancies undergo intensive treatments, endure prolonged hospitalizations, and face the stress of a life-threatening diagnosis, placing them at high risk for developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related trauma symptoms. Methods: This narrative review synthesizes findings from PubMed-indexed studies examining the prevalence, clinical features, and consequences of PTSD in patients with hematological malignancies. A separate focused search was also conducted to identify PTSD studies in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplan

Electrical injury: Chronic pain, somatosensory dysfunction, post traumatic stress and movement disorders.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: We aimed in this case series to identify shortcomings in assessment of long-term painful and psychosocial consequences of EI and to demonstrate the value of biopsychosocial assessment and the commonalities in outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 15 cases from 2004 to 2019 of adult claimants assessed in a medico-legal practice for complex chronic pain disorders secondary to EI. Extensive biopsychosocial information, including 165 data items on pre- and post-injury observations, were collected on each. Cutaneous and deep pressure somatosensory examination was pe

Rorschach content interpretation in post-traumatic stress disorders: a reply to Carr.

In traumatized patients, Rorschach responses draw from a variety of sources, including the traumatic event itself, past and current experiences, and internal fantasy. As complex and highly condensed mental constructions, these responses often serve to reveal the meaning of the trauma in terms of the patient's prevailing personality conflicts. In many cases, this meaning may be hidden in the response's distortion of or elaboration on images drawn from the actual event.

Rethinking Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Systems-Level Disorder of Stress Dysregulation and the Role of Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is traditionally viewed as a brain-centered disorder characterized by impaired fear extinction and dysregulated emotional processing. Despite advances in pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic interventions, treatment resistance remains a major challenge for a substantial proportion of patients, highlighting the complexity of PTSD pathophysiology beyond central neural mechanisms. In addition, PTSD is associated with persistent dysregulation of systemic stress-regulatory networks, including the autonomic nervous system, immune-inflammatory pathways, and the gu

Enhancing exposure therapy for anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Translating findings from basic science, several compounds have been identified that may enhance therapeutic outcomes and/or expedite treatment gains when administered alongside exposure-based treatments. Four of these compounds (referred to as cognitive enhancers) have been evaluated in the context of randomized controlled trials for anxiety disorders (e.g., specific phobias, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder), obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. These cognitive enhancers include D-cycloserine, yohimbine hydrochloride, glucocorticoids and cortisol and brain

OnTEPT: a multimodal OWL ontology for post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a heterogeneous neuropsychiatric condition that develops after exposure to traumatic events. Its diagnosis is currently governed by two major international classification systems, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and International Classification of Diseases) ICD, which differ in structure, granularity, and diagnostic thresholds. Moreover, PTSD assessment is also multimodal, spanning structured interviews, self-report psychometric instruments, and increasing neurophysiological recordings such as electroencephalograp

Hereditary angioedema and post traumatic stress disorder: a reciprocal relationship?

BACKGROUND: Hereditary angioedema (HAE) patients endure repeated unpredictable trauma associated with attacks of disfiguring swelling, severe abdominal pain, risk of asphyxiation or experiences with loss of a loved one with HAE. Our study investigated the prevalence of presumptive post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for HAE due to C1 inhibitor deficiency (HAE-C1INH). RESULTS: Participants ≥ 18 with HAE-C1INH were recruited from the US HAE Association: Cohort 1, self-referred; Cohort 2, randomized from the HAEA membership. Participants completed 8 on-line questionnaires: (1) HAE survey; (2)

Agmatinase and Telomerase Levels in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Children.

OBJECTIVE: Trauma is the impairment of an individual's ability to integrate emotions and cognitions after experiencing events. Psychiatric disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop in individuals following traumatic events. Traumas experienced by children can cause PTSD, just as it is encountered in adults who experience trauma. Alterations in the polyamine synthesis pathway and telomerase activity have been reported to be associated with cellular stress responses and neurobiological processes. Therefore, this study examines polyamine synthesis pathway enzyme levels a

Telomere Dynamics in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Critical Synthesis.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a mental disorder caused by exposure to traumatic stress, affects 5-10% of the world's population. There is some evidence that PTSD is associated with accelerated cellular aging, leading to an increased risk of medical and neurodegenerative comorbidities. Alterations in telomere length (TL) and telomerase enzyme activity have been proposed as biomarkers of this process. This hypothesis was seemingly confirmed in preliminary research, but more recent studies have yielded mixed results. The current narrative review was conducted to provide a critical synthe

An integrative review of post-traumatic stress disorder in pediatric nurses.

PROBLEM: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a concern for healthcare professionals including pediatric nurses. A lack of understanding of the prevalence rates and factors associated with work-related PTSD in pediatric nurses exists. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Articles published in peer-reviewed journals, written in English, focusing on pediatric registered nurses working in inpatient direct-care settings that answered the research questions: (1) describe the prevalence of PTSD in direct-care inpatient pediatric nurses (2) identify factors associated with work-related PTSD were included in th

High and Low Dose Ketamine in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Ketamine has unique properties making it a desirable drug to induce general anesthesia during surgery. However, it is typically reserved for children and adolescent patients due to its side effects in adults, including vivid dreams, hallucinations, and confusional states that may be pleasant or distressing. These symptoms may affect patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is a trauma-related psychological disorder that is mainly characterized by intrusive thoughts, hypervigilance, and re-experiencing of the trauma event. Most of current research focuses on the use of sub-anes

Metacognitive therapy in post-traumatic stress disorder: A meta- analysis.

The metacognitive model of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) proposes that the natural emotional processing following a traumatic event may be impaired due to the negative effects (thoughts and emotions) related to the trauma and its memory. Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) is increasingly being used as a treatment for PTSD. This meta-analysis aimed to examine the effectiveness of MCT clinical outcomes in treating PTSD over the past two decades. In this meta-analysis, we analyzed experimental studies published between January 2000 and October 2022, in which MCT was administered to young and adu
