Hydrophobic zeolites for biofuel upgrading reactions at the liquid-liquid interface in water/oil emulsions.

HY zeolites hydrophobized by functionalization with organosilanes are much more stable in hot liquid water than the corresponding untreated zeolites. Silylation of the zeolite increases hydrophobicity without significantly reducing the density of acid sites. This hydrophobization with organosilanes makes the zeolites able to stabilize water/oil emulsions and catalyze reactions of importance in biofuel upgrading, i.e., alcohol dehydration and alkylation of m-cresol and 2-propanol in the liquid phase, at high temperatures. While at 200 °C the crystalline structure of an untreated HY zeolite coll

Microscale to mesoscale analysis of parenchymal tethering: the effect of heterogeneous alveolar pressures on the pulmonary mechanics of compliant airways.

In the healthy lung, bronchi are tethered open by the surrounding parenchyma; for a uniform distribution of these peribronchial structures, the solution is well known. An open question remains regarding the effect of a distributed set of collapsed alveoli, as can occur in disease. Here, we address this question by developing and analyzing microscale finite-element models of systems of heterogeneously inflated alveoli to determine the range and extent of parenchymal tethering effects on a neighboring collapsible airway. This analysis demonstrates that micromechanical stresses extend over a rang

Current Understandings and Future Opportunities Related to the Structure Direction in Zeolite Synthesis.

Porous materials are intrinsically metastable structures owing to the presence of voids, which form in opposition to thermodynamic driving forces of crystallization, with the aid of structure-directing agents. For some materials, such as metal-organic frameworks, the solvent can play a critical space-filling role to prevent structural collapse. For zeolites, the role of structure direction is multifaceted. The packing of inorganic or organic cations within pores can function in a space-filling or templating role to stabilize channels or cages, while the positive charge is necessary to counterb

Understanding the Tunnel-Structured Evolution in α-MnO2 Cathode Failure for Aqueous Zinc Ion Batteries.

Recently, extensive efforts have been devoted to aqueous Zn-Mn batteries owing to their inherent safety, high energy density, and affordable cost. Comprehensively unveiling the failure mechanism of hollandite cathode is conducive to developing efficient and stable cathodes that is of significant importance in improving their practical competitiveness. Herein, the tunnel-structured evolution of α-MnO2 during cation insertion and extraction processes has been monitored. Experimental results reveal that Ca- (Ca-MnO2) and Cr-doped α-MnO2 (Cr-MnO2) possess expanded tunnel dimension, delivering bett

Release performance and kinetic behavior of volatile products from controlled pressure pyrolysis of oil shale in nitrogen atmosphere.

The gas injection parameters such as temperature, pressure and duration during the in-situ pyrolysis of oil shale are important factors that affect the pore evolution and product release characteristics of oil shale. This paper takes Huadian oil shale as a sample, uses pressurized thermogravimetry and pressurized fluidized bed experimental device to explore the influence of temperature, pressure and time on the evolution of pore structure under high-pressure nitrogen injection conditions, and analyzes the influence mechanism of pore structure evolution on the release and kinetic behavior of vo

Loss of cell adhesion causes hydrocephalus in nonmuscle myosin II-B-ablated and mutated mice.

Ablation of nonmuscle myosin (NM) II-B in mice during embryonic development leads to marked enlargement of the cerebral ventricles and destruction of brain tissue, due to hydrocephalus. We have identified a transient mesh-like structure present at the apical border of cells lining the spinal canal of mice during development. This structure, which only contains the II-B isoform of NM, also contains beta-catenin and N-cadherin, consistent with a role in cell adhesion. Ablation of NM II-B or replacement of NM II-B with decreased amounts of a mutant (R709C), motor-impaired NM II-B in mice results

Firing recoilless weapons from enclosures.

THE PROBLEM: Recoilless weapons commonly release a great deal of energy rearward in the immediate vicinity of the crew. If such weapons are fired from within structures, there is concern that in addition to the acoustic hazard to the ear or other organs, there might be hazard associated with flying debris or even structural collapse. STUDIES: Two studies were conducted to evaluate such hazards by remotely firing a total of 24 rounds from the 90 mm recoilless rifle, LAW, TOW, and DRAGON weapons systems from within enclosures (Price, 1978; Shank & Garinther, 1975). The structures, selected from

Stent flexibility: an essential feature in the treatment of dynamic airway collapse.

Implantation of endobronchial stents for treatment of dynamic airway collapse represents a suitable therapeutic option to alleviate distressing symptoms. We report the case of a 43 year old patient suffering from progressive respiratory distress 2 weeks after insertion of a balloon-expandable radial noncompliant Palmaz stent in an unstable segment of the left main bronchus, with the aim of preventing symptomatic airway collapse. Bronchial instability had developed following sleeve resection of the right lung due to adenoid cystic carcinoma. Explanation revealed compression and deformation of t

Submental negative pressure application decreases collapsibility of the passive pharyngeal airway in nonobese women.

The pharyngeal airway is surrounded by soft tissues that are also enclosed by bony structures such as the mandible, maxilla, and cervical spine. The passive pharyngeal airway is therefore structurally analogous to a collapsible tube within a rigid box. Cross-sectional area of the tube is determined by transmural pressure, the pressure difference between intraluminal and extraluminal pressures. Due to a lack of knowledge on the influence of extraluminal soft tissue pressure on the human pharyngeal airway patency, we hypothesized that application of negative external pressure to the submental re

Neurotropic effects of venoms and other factors that promote prey acquisition.

Mammals envenomed by either the Eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) or the cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus piscivorus) exhibit an immediate but transitory pupillar contraction, a parasympathomimetic effect mediated through the ciliary ganglion that can be prevented by a retrobulbar injection of anesthetic. The venom of the cottonmouth injected into the lymph spaces of the frog (Rana pipiens) produces an immediate and total collapse of the lung sacs. Applied locally to the surface, it produces a constriction that eventually collapses the entire sac. Tests of venoms and tox

Upper airway epithelial structural changes in obstructive sleep-disordered breathing.

The etiology of upper airway collapsibility in patients with snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) remains unclear. Structural mucosal changes could be contributory factors. The objective of this study was to determine whether pathologic changes in the epithelium or the epithelial-connective tissue interface are present in patients with snoring and/or OSA by means of scanning electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry. Uvulae were obtained by uvulopalatopharyngoplasty from three patients with habitual snoring and nine patients with mild to severe OSA, as well as by dissection from 43 non

Mechanistic Elucidation of Dynamic Deformation Transitions and Energy Absorption in Gyroid Structures Across Relative Densities and Compression Velocities.

Understanding the rate-dependent deformation and energy absorption behavior of architected lattice structures is essential for developing lightweight impact-resistant materials. This study investigates the effects of loading rate and relative density on the mechanical response of additively manufactured acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) gyroid structures. Quasi-static and dynamic compression experiments were conducted, and PAM-CRASH finite element simulations were validated against the experimentally investigated compression conditions and subsequently used to explore responses beyond the

Structurally optimized suture resistant polylactic acid (PLA)/poly (є-caprolactone) (PCL) blend based engineered nanofibrous mats.

The structural fabrication and optimization of polylactic acid (PLA)/poly (є-caprolactone) (PCL) blend-based bead-free electrospun nanofibrous mats (ENMs) has been carried out by using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and Taguchi design of experiments (DoE). From the three control parameters i.e., PCL content, N, N- dimethylformamide (DMF) content, and electrospinning solution concentration, the optimal parametric combinations for minimizing the bead defects amongst ENMs were obtained. The parametric optimization outcomes remained identical, from both RSM and Taguchi approaches, irrespective

Beyond Ortner's syndrome--unusual pulmonary complications of the giant left atrium.

INTRODUCTION: The giant left atrium (GLA) is a complication of severe mitral valve disease and causes morbidity by compressing adjacent intra-thoracic structures. CLINICAL PICTURE: We report 2 cases of unusual pulmonary complications of the GLA. Case 1 developed recurrent collapse of the left lung due to left main bronchus compression. Case 2 was diagnosed with right middle lobe compression and collapse. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Case 1 was successfully treated by mitral valve replacement and left atrial reduction surgery. Case 2 was treated conservatively. CONCLUSION: Pulmonary atelectasis ma

Structural geometries and mechanical properties of vertebral implant with honeycomb sandwich structure for vertebral compression fractures: a finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: Because of osteoporosis, traffic accidents, falling from high places, and other reasons, the vertebral body can be compressed and even collapse. Vertebral implants can be used for clinical treatment. Because of the advantages of honeycomb sandwich structures, such as low cost, less material, light weight, high strength, and good cushioning performance. In this paper, the honeycomb sandwich structure was used as the basic structure of vertebral implants. METHODS: The orthogonal experiment method is applied to analyse the size effect of honeycomb sandwich structures by the finite el

Drosophila photoreceptor tethering by a laminin-Eys scaffold.

Visual acuity in Drosophila requires precise photoreceptor alignment along the optical axis, maintained by longitudinal tension between a rigid cornea and a contractile retinal base. Here, we identify the rhabdomere caps-an extracellular matrix (ECM) structure that links rhabdomere tips to the integrin-decorated basal surfaces of overlying, lens-forming cone cells. Rhabdomere caps form perlecan-filled peaks shaped by a trapezoidal LanB1 (laminin) grid, which mirrors the inter-rhabdomeral space (IRS) contour. Our study revealed that Eys (eyes shut), a photoreceptor-secreted proteoglycan essenti

Synthesis of β-cyclodextrin magnetic-graphene-oxide pyrenyl (β-mGOP) gels for high-throughput enrichment and detection of various trace mycotoxins in food using UHPLC-cIMS.

In this research, β-cyclodextrin magnetic-graphene-oxide pyrenyl gel composite (β-mGOP) was employed to remove trace mycotoxins from food products. The β-mGOP gels exhibited a three-dimensional macroporous structure that facilitated the rapid diffusion of target molecules into the nanoporous structure of the covalent organic frameworks embedded within the gel. The adsorption process of mycotoxins onto the β-mGOP gels conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich adsorption model. These findings demonstrated exceptional rapid adsorption kinetics without pore collapse, making

Local orchestration of distributed functional patterns supporting loss and restoration of consciousness in the primate brain.

A central challenge of neuroscience is to elucidate how brain function supports consciousness. Here, we combine the specificity of focal deep brain stimulation with fMRI coverage of the entire cortex, in awake and anaesthetised non-human primates. During propofol, sevoflurane, or ketamine anaesthesia, and subsequent restoration of responsiveness by electrical stimulation of the central thalamus, we investigate how loss of consciousness impacts distributed patterns of structure-function organisation across scales. We report that distributed brain activity under anaesthesia is increasingly const

Single Modification at the N-Terminus of Norvancomycin to Combat Drug-Resistant Gram-Positive Bacteria.

In the arsenal of glycopeptide antibiotics, norvancomycin, which differs from vancomycin by a single methyl group, has received much less attention. Facing the risks of serious antibiotic resistance and even the collapse of last-line defenses, we designed and synthesized 40 novel norvancomycin derivatives to combat the threat. 32 compounds are single N-terminally modified derivatives generated through simple and efficient methods. Diversity at the N-terminus was greatly enriched, mainly by lipophilic attachment and strategies for the introduction of lipo-sulfonium moieties for extensive struct
