Parathyroid scintigraphy during hypocalcaemia in primary hyperparathyroidism.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive parathyroid surgery in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) demands high imaging accuracy. By increasing blood flow to the parathyroid adenoma before injection of a perfusion marker, we intended to improve the parathyroid scintigraphy. We have named the technique stimulated parathyroid scintigraphy (SPS). METHODS: Twenty minutes after injection of 100 MBq (99m)Tc-pertechnetate a thyroid scintigram was performed in 25 patients with PHPT. During the thyroid scintigraphy sodium citrate was infused which lowered plasma calcium by a mean of 14 +/- 1.3%. T

Automated image-matching technique for comparative diagnosis of the liver on CT examination.

When interpreting enhanced computer tomography (CT) images of the upper abdomen, radiologists visually select a set of images of the same anatomical positions from two or more CT image series (i.e., non-enhanced and contrast-enhanced CT images at arterial and delayed phase) to depict and to characterize any abnormalities. The same process is also necessary to create subtraction images by computer. We have developed an automated image selection system using a template-matching technique that allows the recognition of image sets at the same anatomical position from two CT image series. Using the

Bleaching/blinking assisted localization microscopy for superresolution imaging using standard fluorescent molecules.

Superresolution imaging techniques based on the precise localization of single molecules, such as photoactivated localization microscopy (PALM) and stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM), achieve high resolution by fitting images of single fluorescent molecules with a theoretical Gaussian to localize them with a precision on the order of tens of nanometers. PALM/STORM rely on photoactivated proteins or photoswitching dyes, respectively, which makes them technically challenging. We present a simple and practical way of producing point localization-based superresolution images that

Application of Spinal Subtraction and Bone Background Fusion CTA in the Accurate Diagnosis and Evaluation of Spinal Vascular Malformations.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Accurate pretreatment diagnosis and assessment of spinal vascular malformations using spinal CTA are crucial for patient prognosis, but the postprocessing reconstruction may not be able to fully depict the lesions due to the complexity inherent in spinal anatomy. Our purpose was to explore the application value of the spinal subtraction and bone background fusion CTA (SSBBF-CTA) technique in precisely depicting and localizing spinal vascular malformation lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, patients (between November 2017 and November 2022) with

Measurement of a cross-sectional area of normal and stenotic arteries with videodensitometric quantitative arteriography and intravascular ultrasound.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: A videodensitometric technique that allows measurement of absolute cross-sectional area of any complex lesion was compared with an intravascular ultrasound (US) technique. METHODS: Stenotic devices (10-15 mm long) with cross sections of different shapes were placed in the distal aortas of five anesthetized pigs (weight, 40-50 kg). The stenotic devices were imaged by using an intravascular US probe after power injection of contrast material. RESULTS: A comparison of actual areas and measured cross-sectional areas of the stenotic devices showed that videodensitometry

Radionuclide imaging in primary hyperparathyroidism using 99mTc sestamibi--four case reports.

Radionuclide imaging using the 99mTc sestamibi either singly or as a subtraction technique with pertechnetate is a recent and reliable method in localising parathyroid adenomas prior to surgery. This is of use in pre-operative planning, as well as in failed first neck exploration. Four local patients with primary hyperparathyroidism whose parathyroid adenomas were localised by this scintigraphy are presented. The value and limitations of this imaging modality are discussed.

The current role of renal angioplasty in the treatment of renovascular hypertension.

Percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty, a relatively noninvasive technique, has assumed an increasing role in the treatment of renovascular hypertension. The combined advent of digital subtraction angiography, renal-vein renin samples, and percutaneous transluminal angioplasty have prompted many physicians to reassess their treatment strategies. The authors present their experience with renal angioplasty at the New York Hospital and briefly describe the history and mechanism of action of this procedure.

Colour duplex scanning versus angiography: a retrospective assessment of carotid stenosis.

A retrospective study was performed to investigate the reliability of colour duplex scanning as a screening method in detecting carotid artery disease. The results of this technique and digital subtraction arteriography of 100 carotid bifurcations in 50 patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy were compared. In accordance with suggested standard reports dealing with cerebrovascular disease, the diameter reduction was classified in one of five categories: < 20%, 20-59%, 60-79%, 80-99% and total occlusion. In 78% the gradings determined using digital subtraction arteriography and duplex scanni

Metastatic cutaneous malignant melanoma: spectrum of imaging findings and the role of multimodality imaging.

Cutaneous malignant melanoma is one of the most lethal and widely metastasising cancers with unpredictable pathways of spread. One of the most significant factors associated with survival in patients who have distant metastases is the number of organ sites involved. Innovative treatment options are now available for metastatic melanoma, and diagnostic imaging has become crucial for accurate staging and restaging of disease. The objective of this pictorial review is to illustrate the imaging spectrum of metastatic cutaneous malignant melanoma including both the common and the relatively ubiquit

[Evaluation of photographic subtraction images obtained from sialograms].

Photographic subtraction used in the examination of salivary glands was compared with conventional sialography. Subtraction images obtained from the duct system of parotid glands demonstrated the same images as were obtained by conventional sialography. In duct system of the submaxillary glands, however, the conventional sialograms were clearer than those images obtained by subtraction procedures. Subtraction images could provide the outward form of salivary glands, especially in the parotid glands. In most cases, sialography with subtraction provides valuable informations in diagnosing saliva

Digital subtraction angiography in extremity trauma.

Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) may have considerable impact on the work-up of patients who have suffered blunt or penetrating trauma. The angiographic evaluation of vascular injuries (e.g., arteriovenous fistulae, pseudoaneurysms, hemorrhage) can be accomplished rapidly and with minimal catheter use and manipulation, which is particularly important for those critically ill patients who have significant immobility because of multiple fractures. We retrospectively reviewed the digital subtraction angiograms in 50 consecutive cases of extremity trauma. The quality of the images in 44 of th

Rod derotation techniques for thoracolumbar spinal deformity.

OBJECTIVE: The operative correction of scoliosis requires multiple intraoperative techniques and tools to achieve an adequate result. Frequently, multiple methods are used to accomplish this, such as rod cantilever techniques, in situ bending, Smith-Petersen and pedicle subtraction osteotomies, closed reduction methods, and rod derotation techniques. Rod derotation techniques will be reviewed and discussed in this article. METHODS: A review of the available literature on anterior and posterior rod derotation is performed with a case example of the authors' experience utilizing this technique.

Technical report: digital subtraction dacryocystography.

Twenty-one patients presenting clinically with obstructive epiphora were investigated by digital subtraction dacryocystography (DSDCG). This technique is quick and simple to perform, with good patient acceptance. It produces diagnostic images on a single radiographic projection. The proximal lacrimal apparatus is well demonstrated. Patient radiation dose to the orbit is apparently reduced in DSDCG without the use of lead eye shields. The technique of DSDCG was readily acquired by junior radiologists. Reliable and accurate demonstrations of lacrimal duct obstructions were produced in a general

Accelerated noncontrast-enhanced 4-dimensional intracranial MR angiography using golden-angle stack-of-stars trajectory and compressed sensing with magnitude subtraction.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility and performance of compressed sensing (CS) with magnitude subtraction regularization in accelerating non-contrast-enhanced dynamic intracranial MR angiography (NCE-dMRA). METHODS: A CS algorithm was introduced in NCE-dMRA by exploiting the sparsity of the magnitude difference of the control and label images. The NCE-dMRA data were acquired using golden-angle stack-of-stars trajectory on six healthy volunteers and one patient with arteriovenous fistula. Images were reconstructed using (i) the proposed magnitude-subtraction CS (MS-CS); (ii) complex-subtracti
