Diversity and ecology of microbial sulfur metabolism.

Sulfur plays a pivotal role in interactions within the atmosphere, lithosphere, pedosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere, and the functioning of living organisms. In the Earth's crust, mantle, and atmosphere, sulfur undergoes geochemical transformations due to natural and anthropogenic factors. In the biosphere, sulfur participates in the formation of amino acids, proteins, coenzymes and vitamins. Microorganisms in the biosphere are crucial for cycling sulfur compounds through oxidation, reduction and disproportionation reactions, facilitating their bioassimilation and energy generation. Microbia…

Synthesis and Structure of Protonated Sulfur Dioxide.

Salts of protonated sulfur dioxide were synthesized by recrystallization of [FS(OX)2][SbF6] (X=H, D) in aprotic solvents at low temperatures. Hemiprotonated sulfur dioxide [(SO2)2H][Sb2F11] was obtained from the solvent SO2 and the monoprotonated sulfur dioxide [OSOD][Sb2F11], using 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane as solvent. For both compounds, single crystals were obtained and an X-ray structure analysis was conducted. Furthermore, the salts were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and the results were discussed together with quantum chemical calculations on the M06-2X/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory.

Effect of sulfur mustard on melanogenesis in vitro.

The chemical warfare agent sulfur mustard (SM) affects all cells in the epidermis including melanocytes which are responsible for melanin synthesis. After exposure to SM, pigment abnormalities like hypo- and hyperpigmentation can occur. The underlying molecular pathomechanisms of SM exposure on human melanogenesis have not been elucidated so far. In our study, we investigated the effect of SM on human melanocytes and melanogenesis. Normal human epidermal melanocytes (NHEM) were used as in vitro model and they were exposed to different concentrations of SM (4.5 μM-100 μM). Melanin production wa…

A case of vitiligo cured with cucumber and sulfur.

This study investigates a 42-year-old man who used sulfur powder adhered to cucumber slices to successfully self-treat a vitiligo condition. The treatment has resulted in no recurrence of the disease for 21 years. We analyzed the mechanism of this folk prescription for vitiligo, concluding that the success of the self-treatment may be mainly associated with hydrogen sulfide (H2 S). The antibacterial activity of pentathionic acid (H2 S5 O6 ) and the antioxidant activity of cucumber might also play a role in the treatment.

Fixation of sulfur dioxide into small molecules.

Sulfonyl-derived functional groups can be found in a broad range of natural products, pharmaceuticals, and materials. Among the methods for the introduction of the sulfonyl group into small molecules, the approach using sulfur dioxide is the most promising and attractive one. In the past several years, the insertion of sulfur dioxide into small molecules under transition metal catalysis or metal-free conditions via a radical process has been developed. In this review, recent advances in the insertion of sulfur dioxide are presented.

Optimization of a monitoring network for sulfur dioxide.

In this study, we develop and apply a methodology to reduce an existing monitoring network to find an optimal configuration of a smaller network. We use a criterion based on locally weighted regression with two different weight functions. The methodology is applied to the Dutch national SO2 network and offers the possibility to include different politically relevant options in the model by weight criteria. Because full enumeration of all monitoring networks is impossible, a combinatorial search algorithm is applied to find a (sub)optimal solution. If different (optimal) monitoring networks res

Detection of sulfur dioxide in bronchodilator aerosols.

Several bronchodilator drugs commonly used in respiratory therapy contain sodium metabisulfite as an antioxidant preservative. When aerosolized, these agents may release the irritant gas SO2 as a result of bisulfite decomposition. We found that agents that contain bisulfites generated SO2 concentrations of 2.0 ppm and greater, while bronchodilator solutions without bisulfite did not. Such levels are known to induce or to exacerbate asthmatic symptoms. Levels of SO2 were higher when solutions were nebulized with compressed air from a tank or electric compressor than when they were nebulized fro

Antibotulinal efficacy of sulfur dioxide in meat.

The addition of sodium metabisulfite as a source of sulfur dioxide delayed botulinal outgrowth in perishable canned comminuted pork when it was temperature abused at 27 degree C. The degree of inhibition was directly related to the level of sulfur dioxide. Levels greater than 100 microgram of sulfur dioxide per g were necessary to achieve significant inhibition when a target level of 100 botulinal spores per g was used. Sodium nitrite partially reduced the efficacy of the sulfur dioxide. Sulfur dioxide offers a new option for the control of botulinal outgrowth in cured or noncured meat and pou…

Mechanisms of resistance to sulfur dioxide in the Cucurbitaceae.

The relative resistance of four cultivars of the Cucurbitaceae (Cucumis sativus L. cv. National Pickling, and inbred line SC 25; Cucurbita pepo L. cv. Prolific Straightneck Squash, and cv. Small Sugar Pumpkin) to SO(2) was determined. According to plots of the degree of exposure to SO(2) (which depends on the SO(2) concentration and the duration of the exposure), there is an 8-fold difference in resistance to this toxic gas among these cultivars. However, if the degree of injury is plotted as a function of the amount of SO(2) absorbed, all four cultivars appear similarly sensitive to the gas.

Sulfur dioxide contributions to the atmosphere by volcanoes.

The first extensive measurements by remote-sensing correlation spectrometry of the sulfur dioxide emitted by volcanic plumes indicate that on the order of 10(3) metric tons of sulfur dioxide gas enter the atmosphere daily from Central American volcanoes. Extrapolation gives a minimum estimate of the annual amount of sulfur dioxide emitted from the world's volcanoes of about 10(7) metric tons.

Multiheme selenoenzyme essential for elemental sulfur respiration.

Elemental sulfur reduction is a key process in anaerobic ecosystems and the global sulfur cycle. Although elemental sulfur serves as a terminal electron acceptor in microbial respiration, the molecular basis is unclear. Here, we identify a conserved multiheme cytochrome c selenoprotein essential for sulfur reduction in a sulfur-respiring bacterium. Structural and biochemical analyses show that the enzyme forms a tetramer, with each subunit containing five hemes and one selenocysteine residue. The enzyme catalyzes polysulfide reduction at an active site, where a cysteine coordinates the heme ir…
