Dietary Sulfur-Containing Amino Acids Are Associated with Higher Prevalence of Overweight/Obesity in Northern Chinese Adults, an Internet-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Elevation of plasma sulfur-containing amino acids (SAAs) is generally associated with higher body mass index (BMI) and unfavorable lipid profiles. It is not known how dietary SAAs relate to these associations in humans. METHODS: A convenient tool named internet-based dietary questionnaire for Chinese (IDQC) was used to estimate dietary SAAs intake. A total of 936 participants were randomly recruited and asked to complete the IDQC. Furthermore, 90 subjects were randomly selected to perform a subgroup study. The associations between dietary SAAs and prevalence of obesity, lipid

Imbalanced dietary methionine-to-sulfur amino acid ratio can affect amino acid profiles, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal morphology of piglets.

Animal protein sources such as fishmeal and plasma powder are excellent and indispensable sources of energy, amino acids, and minerals in animal production. Amino acid imbalance, especially methionine-to-sulfur amino acid (Met:SAA) ratio, caused by an imbalance of animal protein meal leads to growth restriction. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of imbalanced Met:SAA ratio supplementation of different animal protein source diets on growth performance, plasma amino acid profiles, antioxidant capacity and intestinal morphology in a piglet model. Twenty-four weaned piglets (castrat

Artificial Diets with Altered Levels of Sulfur Amino Acids Induce Anticancer Activity in Mice with Metastatic Colon Cancer, Ovarian Cancer and Renal Cell Carcinoma.

Sulfur-containing amino acids methionine (Met), cysteine (Cys) and taurine (Tau) are common dietary constituents with important cellular roles. Met restriction is already known to exert in vivo anticancer activity. However, since Met is a precursor of Cys and Cys produces Tau, the role of Cys and Tau in the anticancer activity of Met-restricted diets is poorly understood. In this work, we screened the in vivo anticancer activity of several Met-deficient artificial diets supplemented with Cys, Tau or both. Diet B1 (6% casein, 2.5% leucine, 0.2% Cys and 1% lipids) and diet B2B (6% casein, 5% glu

Building a High-Potential Silver-Sulfur Redox Reaction Based on the Hard-Soft Acid-Base Theory.

Sulfur holds immense promise for battery applications owing to its abundant availability, low cost, and high capacity. Currently, sulfur is commonly combined with alkali or alkaline earth metals in metal-sulfur batteries. However, these batteries universally face challenges in cycling stability due to the inevitable issue of polysulfide dissolution and shuttling. Additionally, the inferior stability of metal sulfide discharge compounds results in low S0/S2- redox potentials (<-0.41 V vs SHE). Herein, we leverage the principle of the hard-soft acid-base theory to introduce a novel silver-sulfur

Effects of sulfur amino acid supplementation on broiler chickens exposed to acute and chronic cyclic heat stress.

Chronic heat stress can result in oxidative damage from increased reactive oxygen species. One proposed method to alleviate the chronic effects of HS is the supplementation of sulfur amino acids (SAA) which can be metabolized to glutathione, an important antioxidant. Therefore, the objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of dietary SAA content on broiler chickens exposed to HS from 28 to 35 d on broiler performance, body temperature, intestinal permeability, and oxidative status. Four experimental treatments were arranged as a 2 × 2 factorial consisting of HS (6 h at 33.3°C f

Sulfuric Acid Immobilized on Activated Carbon Aminated with Ethylenediamine: An Efficient Reusable Catalyst for the Synthesis of Acetals (Ketals).

Through the amination of oxidized activated carbon with ethylenediamine and then the adsorption of sulfuric acid, a strong carbon-based solid acid catalyst with hydrogen sulfate (denoted as AC-N-SO4H) was prepared, of which the surface acid density was 0.85 mmol/g. The acetalization of benzaldehyde with ethylene glycol catalyzed by AC-N-SO4H was investigated. The optimized catalyst dosage accounted for 5 wt.% of the benzaldehyde mass, and the molar ratio of glycol to benzaldehyde was 1.75. After reacting such mixture at 80 °C for 5 h, the benzaldehyde was almost quantitatively converted into a

Sulfur recycle in biogas production: Novel Higee desulfurization process using natural amino acid salts.

In this work, a desulfurization method using natural amino acid salts (AAS), which can be green prepared by biological fermentation, is proposed to remove H2S from raw biogas. Biogas purification and fertilizer production can be simultaneously achieved to close sulfur recycle. The reaction kinetic characteristics of H2S absorption with three kinds of AAS, including potassium β-alaninate (PA), potassium sarcosinate (PS) and potassium l-prolinate (PP) are first studied. Kinetic parameters including orders of reaction, rate constants, pre-exponential factors and activation energies are given. AAS

Sulfur amino acid metabolism and related metabotypes of autism spectrum disorder: A review of biochemical evidence for a hypothesis.

There are multiple lines of evidence for an impaired sulfur amino acid (SAA) metabolism in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). For instance, the concentrations of methionine, cysteine and S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) in body fluids of individuals with ASD is significantly lower while the concentration of S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH) is significantly higher as compared to healthy individuals. Reduced methionine and SAM may reflect impaired remethylation pathway whereas increased SAH may reflect reduced S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase activity in the catabolic direction. Reduced SAM/SAH ratio reflect

Physiologic Responses to Dietary Sulfur Amino Acid Restriction in Mice Are Influenced by Atf4 Status and Biological Sex.

BACKGROUND: Dietary sulfur amino acid restriction (SAAR) improves body composition and metabolic health across several model organisms in part through induction of the integrated stress response (ISR). OBJECTIVE: We investigate the hypothesis that activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4) acts as a converging point in the ISR during SAAR. METHODS: Using liver-specific or global gene ablation strategies, in both female and male mice, we address the role of ATF4 during dietary SAAR. RESULTS: We show that ATF4 is dispensable in the chronic induction of the hepatokine fibroblast growth factor 21

Sulfur precursor and citric acid effect on SnS2 nanoparticles and their influence on the photodegradation activity of selected organic compounds.

Semiconductor nanoparticle-mediated photocatalysis is an attractive option for water decontamination, being the semiconductors as SnS2 with a bandgap in the visible region, the most promising materials. In the present work, we evaluated the influence of important parameters in the photocatalytic application of SnS2 nanoparticles. Our results show that the presence of citric acid (used as a capping agent) restricts the formation of hexagonal nanoparticles. We also demonstrated that using thioacetamide as a sulfur source results in smaller nanoparticles than thiourea, 24.0 nm and 616 nm respecti

New mechanistic pathways for the formation of organosulfates catalyzed by ammonia and carbinolamine formation catalyzed by sulfuric acid in the atmosphere.

In the secondary organic aerosol formation, exploring the formation of nucleation precursors is of paramount importance for understanding the secondary organic aerosol formation. Here, we report new mechanistic pathways for the formation of organosulfates and carbinolamine in the atmospheric gas phase by utilizing a high-level W2X//QCISD/cc-pV(T+d)Z method close to CCSD(T)/CBS accuracy, dual level kinetics strategy by combining multistructural variational the transition state theory, containing small-curvature tunneling at the M08-SO/maug-cc-pVTZ level with the conventional transition state th

The regulation of the sulfur amino acid biosynthetic pathway in Cryptococcus neoformans: the relationship of Cys3, Calcineurin, and Gpp2 phosphatases.

Cryptococcosis is a fungal disease caused by C. neoformans. To adapt and survive in diverse ecological niches, including the animal host, this opportunistic pathogen relies on its ability to uptake nutrients, such as carbon, nitrogen, iron, phosphate, sulfur, and amino acids. Genetic circuits play a role in the response to environmental changes, modulating gene expression and adjusting the microbial metabolism to the nutrients available for the best energy usage and survival. We studied the sulfur amino acid biosynthesis and its implications on C. neoformans biology and virulence. CNAG_04798 e

Comparison of sulfur amino acid utilization for GSH synthesis between HepG2 cells and cultured rat hepatocytes.

HepG2 cells are widely used as a model of human hepatocytes for studies of drug metabolism and toxicity. However, GSH metabolism in HepG2 cells is poorly characterized. This report describes the utilization of sulfur amino acids for GSH synthesis in HepG2 cells. In contrast to primary cultures of rat hepatocytes, which rely mostly on methionine for GSH synthesis, HepG2 cells use cystine. Their inability to utilize methionine for GSH synthesis was not due to lack of methionine uptake or low cellular ATP levels, but rather to the lack of S-adenosyl-methionine synthetase activity. When HepG2 cell

[Effects of peeling agents (resorcinol, crystalline sulfur, salicylic acid) on the epidermis of guinea pig (author's transl)].

The mode of action of "classical peeling agents" such as resorcinol, crystalline sulfur, and salicylic acid on the epidermis is almost unknown. There are only a few experimental data available. Therefore the effects of resorcinol, crystalline sulfur, and salicylic acid were studied. A 1% and 3% concentration of these chemicals in vaselinum flavum or Unguentum Cordes was applied to the ears and flanks of adult male guinea pigs up to 14 days. Prior to biopsies at various time intervals, 3H-thymidine was injected intradermally. Specimens were paraffin embedded and routinely processed for autoradi

Acid modification enhances selective catalytic reduction activity and sulfur dioxide resistance of manganese-cerium-cobalt catalysts: Insight into the role of phosphotungstic acid.

Improving the SO2 resistance of catalysts is crucial to driving commercial applications of Mn-based catalysts. In this work, the phosphotungstic acid (HPW) modification strategy was applied to improve the N2 selectivity, SO2 and H2O resistance of the Mn-Ce-Co catalyst, and further, the mechanism of HWP modification on enhanced catalytic performance was explored. The results showed that HPW-Mn-Ce-Co catalyst exhibits higher NOx conversion (~100% at 100-250 °C) and N2 selectivity (exceed 80% at 50-350 °C) due to more oxygen vacancies, greater surface acidity, and lower redox capacity. Microwave-Assisted Sulfuric Acid Leaching of Vanadium from Pre-Decalcified Vanadium-Bearing Steel Slag.

Vanadium-bearing steel slag has attracted considerable attention as a secondary source of vanadium. Pre-decalcified vanadium-bearing steel slag served as the feedstock to evaluate vanadium leaching under microwave irradiation and conventional water-bath heating by varying sulfuric acid concentration, temperature, leaching time, and liquid-to-solid ratio. The leaching performance was further evaluated through countercurrent leaching experiments, and kinetic analysis was conducted to investigate the rate-controlling behavior. The results demonstrated that the optimum leaching conditions under mi
