Unintended Sunburn: A Potential Target for Sun Protection Messages.

New Zealand (NZ) has the highest melanoma incidence rate in the world. Primary prevention efforts focus on reducing sunburn incidence and increasing sun protective practices in the population. However, sunburn from excessive ultraviolet radiation (UVR) remains common. To reduce sunburn incidence, it is important to examine those individuals who experience unintended sunburn. This study aims to use data from the NZ Triennial Sun Protection Survey to describe respondents who were not intending to tan but were sunburnt after outdoor UVR exposure. Information on sociodemographics, concurrent weath…

Sun exposure, sun protection and sunburn among Canadian adults.

BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure and a history of sunburn are important risk factors for skin cancer. Sunburn is more common among men, younger age groups, and people in higher income households. Sun protection measures also vary by sex, age, and socioeconomic characteristics. Associations between ambient UVR and sunburn and sun safety measures have not been quantified. DATA AND METHODS: A total of 53,130 respondents aged 18 or older answered a Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) module on sun safety, which was administered in six provinces from 2005 to 2014. The module co…

Beach holiday sunburn: the sunscreen paradox and gender differences.

A survey about sunbathing practices was performed on a summer holiday weekend at a Galveston beach. The likelihood of sunburn increased with increasing duration of sun exposure, with 100% of subjects experiencing sunburn after exposure > or = 4.5 hours. Men exhibited a significantly higher frequency of sunburn, employed fewer sun-protective measures, and demonstrated less knowledge concerning sun safety information and skin cancer than women. This information suggests a need for greater educational efforts directed toward changing public attitudes about preventing sunburn, especially those of …

Infrared radiation suppresses ultraviolet B-induced sunburn-cell formation.

Sunburn cell (SC) formation, a quantifiable measure of epidermal cell injury induced in mouse ear skin by ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation (290-320 nm), was significantly decreased by pre-exposure to infrared radiation (IR), which elevated the surface temperature of ear lobes to 37-42 degrees C. An autoradiographic study demonstrated that the basal cell labelling indices were significantly reduced in a surface temperature-dependent manner by pre-exposure to IR. Taken together with our previous findings that SC formation depends upon the ratio of cycling to non-cycling cells, the present findings …

The impact of ultraviolet radiation on sunburn-related search activity.

We establish a strong, positive relationship between the Ultraviolet Index and Google search engine activity for sunburn-related terms in the United States. Using the Google Trends utility and data available from the National Weather service, we combine data from a twelve-year period to produce panel data for each state. We fit a time-series regression model of search activity and perform statistical tests on the resulting parameter estimates. This study lays the groundwork for using search-related data to assess the prevalence of, and attitudes about sunburn. By tracking the frequency of sear…

Correlates of Sun Protection and Sunburn in Children of Melanoma Survivors.

INTRODUCTION: Sunburns during childhood increase melanoma risk. Children of melanoma survivors are at higher risk, but little is known about their sunburn and sun protection. One study showed that almost half of melanoma survivors' children experienced sunburn in the past year. This study evaluated sunburn and sun protection in melanoma survivors' children, and relevant survivor characteristics from Social Cognitive Theory and the Health Belief Model. METHODS: Melanoma survivors (N=340) were recruited from a comprehensive cancer center. Survivors completed a baseline questionnaire administere…

Sunburn in children and adolescents: associations with parents' behaviour and attitudes.

AIMS: Sunburn in childhood is a known risk factor for melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. Based on a theoretical model, we tested the hypothesis that parental attitudes and behaviour are related to the risk of sunburn in their children. METHODS: We analysed the association between behaviour in the sun and attitudes related to tanning among Danish parents and their children's risk for sunburn by logistic regression. Gender, educational level, and skin type of the responding parent were included as confounders and analyses were stratified for child age. RESULTS: In children aged 7-12 and 13…

Paediatric sunburn: the experience of an Australian paediatric burns unit.

AIM: The number of hospital presentations and admissions for treatment of sunburn remains significant, despite efforts to educate the public regarding sun protection. Current literature chiefly examines public health campaigns and sun protection behaviours and attitudes. There are very few articles that explore paediatric sunburn requiring hospital presentation. This study was therefore undertaken to provide a snapshot of this issue and to identify patterns and causative factors in the development of severe sunburn requiring hospital presentation. METHODS: Data were collected for retrospectiv…

Knowledge and perception of melanocytic nevi and sunburn in young children.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Understanding the public's perception of nevi and sunburn is crucial to melanoma prevention efforts. METHODS: We investigated the knowledge and perception of melanocytic nevi and sunburns in 77 children 6 to 10 years old (mean 8.2) in two elementary schools in Styria, Austria. The children were interviewed by specially trained psychologists about the number of their moles and how they felt having them. Additionally questions about sunburn history and sunburn perception were asked. The spontaneous answers of the children were recorded, there were no pregiven answers. Aft…

Cutaneous melanoma and sunburns in childhood in a southern European population.

A population-based case-control study of 260 patients (74 males and 186 females, mean age = 56) with cutaneous malignant melanoma and 416 controls (211 males and 205 females, mean age = 55) was conducted in Turin, north-west Italy, to examine the relation between timing of sunburns and sun exposure and melanoma risk within a southern European population, which is still relatively little investigated. Particularly elevated risk was associated with history of sunburns in childhood [odds ratio 5.9; 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.6-9.5], and such risk elevation persisted after allowance for other …

Immunization, abrasion, and sunburn as localizing factors in chicken pox.

Three children had striking localization of varicella lesions to skin overlying a diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus toxoid (DPT) immunization injection site, a facial abrasion, and a sunburn of the trunk, respectively. Presumably, during the viremic stage of varicella, the virus passed from damaged blood vessels into the skin. A disabling myalgia in the thigh at the DPT site in one child may also have been the result of localization of the varicella virus in the muscle during the inapparent viremic stage. This suggests that an injection given during an occult viremia could trigger an unexpected rea…

Immediate sunburn-like reaction in a patient with formaldehyde photosensitivity.

A 78-year-old man experienced pruritus, burning, and redness within minutes of exposure to sunlight. The immediacy as well as the temporary nature of the response was similar to that seen in solar urticaria, but in sharp contrast to the delayed reactions associated with sunburn and photocontact dermatitis. Photo-patch tests revealed a specific photosensitivity to formaldehyde. Despite its ubiquitous presence and its capacity to produce allergic contact dermatitis, formaldehyde, to my knowledge, has not been previously found to be a photosensitizer.
