It is desirable to identify those pregnancies that run an increased risk of abruptio placentae, as this disorder still is associated with a high perinatal mortality. Data were collected from the Swedish nationwide birth registry system on all 894,619 births in Sweden in the period 1973 to 1981. Maternal mortality in Sweden has declined steeply over the past 50 years. The reasons for this gratifying trend have been analysed. A decreasing incidence of complications during pregnancy and delivery, together with a lower case fatality rate from complications have been found to account for the major part of the reduction in maternal mortality in Sweden. This has been achieved by improvements in obstetrical and antenatal care, by the introduction of antibiotics and blood transfusion, and by a favorable shift to more appropriate ages for reproduction.

The annual incidence of IgA-positive dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) during the years 1976-1981 in Gothenburg, Sweden, a city with approximately 430000 inhabitants, was estimated prospectively. The mean annual incidence was 1.1 per 10(5) inhabitants. The prevalence of DH as at 31 December, 1981 was 22.9 per 10(5) inhabitants or 19.6 if patients in long-standing spontaneous remission were excluded. These figures probably represent the minimum overall prevalence rate.
