Assessment of a Digital Symptom Checker Tool's Accuracy in Suggesting Reproductive Health Conditions: Clinical Vignettes Study.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive health conditions such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affect a large proportion of women and people who menstruate worldwide. Prevalence estimates for these conditions range from 5% to 40% of women of reproductive age. Long diagnostic delays, up to 12 years, are common and contribute to health complications and increased health care costs. Symptom checker apps provide users with information and tools to better understand their symptoms and thus have the potential to reduce the time to diagnosis for reproductive health condition

Symptom-based pharmacotherapy for neuropathic pain related to spinal disorders: results from a patient-based assessment.

Existing guidelines advocate an updated therapeutic algorithm for chronic neuropathic pain (NeP), but pharmacotherapeutic management should be individualized to pain phenotypes to achieve higher efficacy. This study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy of medications, based on NeP phenotypes, and to propose symptom-based pharmacotherapy. This retrospective study was enrolled 265 outpatients with chronic NeP related to spinal disorders. The patients were classified into three groups: spinal cord-related pain, radicular pain, and cauda equina syndrome. Data were obtained from patient-based questio

An App Detecting Dengue Fever in Children: Using Sequencing Symptom Patterns for a Web-Based Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever (DF) is one of the most common arthropod-borne viral diseases worldwide, particularly in South East Asia, Africa, the Western Pacific, and the Americas. However, DF symptoms are usually assessed using a dichotomous (ie, absent vs present) evaluation. There has been no published study that has reported using the specific sequence of symptoms to detect DF. An app is required to help patients or their family members or clinicians to identify DF at an earlier stage. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop an app examining symptoms to effectively predict DF. METHO

Lesion correlates of patholinguistic profiles in chronic aphasia: comparisons of syndrome-, modality- and symptom-level assessment.

One way to investigate the neuronal underpinnings of language competence is to correlate patholinguistic profiles of aphasic patients to corresponding lesion sites. Constituting the beginnings of aphasiology and neurolinguistics over a century ago, this approach has been revived and refined in the past decade by statistical approaches mapping continuous variables (providing metrics that are not simply categorical) on voxel-wise lesion information (voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping). Here we investigate whether and how voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping allows us to delineate specific lesion p

Psychometric evaluation of a patient-reported symptom assessment tool for adults with haemophilia (the HAEMO-SYM).

In patients with haemophilia, repeated bleeding events result in significant comorbid conditions that can degrade health-related quality of life. Clinician-reported symptom measures are available for use in patients with haemophilia A or B; however, there has not been a validated patient-reported symptom evaluation instrument available for haemophilia to date. The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a self-report instrument, the HAEMO-SYM, for measuring symptom severity in patients with haemophilia. Eighty-four haemophilic subjects from Canada and the USA were enrolled and comp

The importance of symptom assessment in the surgical treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and Barrett's esophagus.

The "art" and science of symptom assessment in the evaluation of patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease has been under emphasized. In fact, it is critical to judgements regarding surgical versus non-surgical therapy and is much more difficult than meets the eye. Many symptoms thought to be secondary to gastroesophageal reflux are not, and some, such as asthma cough and chest pain, which are commonly thought secondary to other causes, are indeed symptoms of reflux. Diagnostic studies are helpful but far from perfect, ultimately requiring the clinician's expert judgement as the key factor…

Measuring symptom distress and health-related quality of life in clinical trials of gastroesophageal reflux disease treatment: further validation of the Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Symptom Assessment Scale (GSAS).

This study reports the reliability and validity of the distress subscale of the GERD Symptom Assessment Scale (GSAS) and the acute SF-36 Health Survey in a clinical trial setting. Patients with moderately severe GERD completed the GSAS and SF-36 at baseline and four weeks following treatment. The age (mean +/- SD) of the 187 patients was 45.5 +/- 11.1 years and most were female (63%) and Caucasian (78%). All scales met the 0.70 reliability criterion except for the SF-36 bodily pain scale. Mean baseline GSAS scores were significantly (P < 0.001) poorer by 10-17% among patients reporting more se…
