[Symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia and anxiety: a dynamic analysis].

The paper analyses the connection between anxiety and different symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia. In the study 66 patients admitted to hospital with an episode of paranoid schizophrenia were examined by a set of tests. Exacerbation of anxiety was measured by State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), whilst symptoms of schizophrenia--by the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and Scale for Assessment of Positive and negative Symptoms (SANS < SAPS). Statistically important correlations between anxiety and the majority of positive symptoms were observed. On the other hand, correlations between ne

Executive function in fibromyalgia: Comparing subjective and objective measures.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence to suggest the existence of an executive dysfunction in people diagnosed with fibromyalgia, although there are certain inconsistencies between studies. Here, we aim to compare executive performance between patients with fibromyalgia and a control group by using subjective and objective cognitive tests, analyzing the influence of patient mood on the results obtained, and studying associations between the two measures. METHOD: 82 patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia and 42 healthy controls, matched by age and years of education, were assessed using the Behavioral R

Double-blind study on the hypnotic and antianxiety effects of zopiclone compared with nitrazepam in the treatment of insomnia.

The effects of zopiclone (7.5 mg/per os/day), a new non-benzodiazepine drug, on anxiety levels, time of sleep induction, hours of sleep, number of nocturnal arousals, quality of sleep and of daytime arousal were evaluated by using psychometric ratings. A random double-blind cross-over study versus nitrazepam (5.0 mg/per os/day) was performed on 20 patients affected by insomnia and generalized anxiety disorder (DSM III-R). The effects were evaluated by using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety, the Toulouse-Pieron Attention Test and a time-signed quantitative scale for anxiety. The results of

Does the Child Behavior Checklist predict levels of preoperative anxiety at anesthetic induction and postoperative emergence delirium? A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: preoperative anxiety at induction and postoperative emergence delirium (ED) in children are associated with postoperative behavioral changes and adjustment disorders. This study's aim is to assess the value of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) score in order to predict anxiety during induction and emergence delirium after anesthesia in children undergoing elective day-care surgery. METHODS: Anxiety at induction, assessed by the modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale (mYPAS), was studied as outcome in 401 children (60.1% male, age range: 1.5-16 years). For 343 of these children

Adaptive functions of self-focused attention: Insight and depressive and anxiety symptoms.

Maladaptive forms of self-focus, such as rumination, are considered transdiagnostic factors that contribute to depressive and anxiety symptoms. However, no or few studies have explored the possibility that adaptive forms of self-focus can also be a common factor that is negatively associated with depressive and anxiety symptoms. To test this possibility, we first examined the psychometric properties of a scale measuring adaptive forms of self-focus (the Self-Reflection and Insight Scale) on Japanese undergraduates (n=117). We replicated the two-factor structure of the scale: (a) self-reflectio

Psychometric properties, validation, and reliability of the Japanese version of the sport anxiety scale-2 for university student athletes.

BACKGROUND: Competitive anxiety is a critical factor that affects athletes' performance and mental well-being. The Sport Anxiety Scale-2 (SAS-2) is a widely used multidimensional measure for sport-specific anxiety, but a validated Japanese version has been unavailable. This study aimed to develop a Japanese version of the SAS-2 and evaluate its reliability and validity among university athletes in Japan. METHODS: After a standard back-translation process, 640 university athletes (mean age 19.1 ± 1.0 years) completed an online survey containing the Japanese SAS-2 and scales for competitive anx

Test Anxiety Among College Students With Specific Reading Disability (Dyslexia): Nonverbal Ability and Working Memory as Predictors.

Test anxiety and its correlates were examined with college students with and without specific reading disability (RD; n = 50 in each group). Results indicated that college students with RD reported higher test anxiety than did those without RD, and the magnitude of these differences was in the medium range on two test anxiety scales. Relative to college students without RD, up to 5 times as many college students with RD reported clinically significant test anxiety. College students with RD reported significantly higher cognitively based test anxiety than physically based test anxiety. Reading …

[Psychometric properties of the Hungarian version of the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale - Short Version (IUS-12)].

INTRODUCTION: Intolerance of uncertainty is the tendency to react negatively to an uncertain situation, regardless of the probability of the occurrence of the event and its consequences. Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) can also be conceptualized as a personality trait that is prominent in many anxiety and rumination-related pathologies. A growing body of research highlights its key role in understanding anxiety disorders. METHOD: The aim of present study was to investigate the dimensionality, validity and reliability of the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale in a large non-clinical sample (N =

Individual differences in attachment anxiety shape the association between adverse childhood experiences and adult somatic symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Although prior research has documented the link between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and somatic symptoms, it remains unclear why some individuals exposed to ACEs developed somatic symptoms while others did not. OBJECTIVE: Framed by a biopsychosocial perspective, this study investigated the role of attachment anxiety in the association between ACEs and somatic symptoms in adulthood. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: A total of 662 emerging adults attending college were recruited to respond to an online survey in a computer lab. METHOD: The computer-based survey included demograp

Psychometric evaluation of the 21-item Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) among Afghans.

BACKGROUND: Depression, anxiety, and stress are psychological mood states that have close relationships. Moreover, they are influenced by situational factors such as living in conflict zones (e.g., Afghanistan). The World Health Organization’s assessment suggests that a significant proportion, specifically one-tenth, of the population residing in areas of conflict endure varying degrees of mental health disorders, ranging from moderate to severe. The most used psychometric instrument to assess these mood states is the 21-item Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21). However, the scale h

Online self-test identifies women at high familial breast cancer risk in population-based breast cancer screening without inducing anxiety or distress.

INTRODUCTION: Identifying high familial breast cancer (FBC) risk improves detection of yet unknown BRCA1/2-mutation carriers, for whom BC risk is both highly likely and potentially preventable. We assessed whether a new online self-test could identify women at high FBC risk in population-based BC screening without inducing anxiety or distress. METHODS: After their visit for screening mammography, women were invited by email to take an online self-test for identifying highly increased FBC risk-based on Dutch guidelines. Exclusion criteria were previously diagnosed as increased FBC risk or a pe
