Acute or chronic spinal cord syndromes with or without evidence of cord compression are a common diagnostic problem in neurology. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed on 127 patients to assess the sensitivity of this examination in detecting local spinal cord lesions. The most common location noticed in this study were the cervico-thoracic (40.9%) and cervical regions (33.8%). A total spine examination accounted for 14.9% of the examinations performed, and the lumbar spine was evaluated in 10.2%. An increased signal corresponding to plaques of multiple sclerosis was the most frequent

Lung and thymus neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are rare tumors. According to the fifth edition of the World Health Organization classification of thoracic tumors published in 2021, lung and thymus NENs include typical carcinoids, atypical carcinoids, large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas, and small cell carcinomas. Although the incidence of lung and thymus NENs has gradually increased in recent years, there is a lack of randomized controlled clinical study results to guide clinical practice. The treatment of early-stage lung and thymus NENs is complete surgical resection, and the treatment met

Most neoplasms arising from the thymic epithelium are considered to be 'thymomas', which are composed of cytologically benign, neoplastic epithelial cells and nonneoplastic lymphocytes. In contrast, thymic epithelial neoplasms displaying cytologically malignant features have recently been classified as thymic carcinomas of various types of histology. However, primary thymic adenocarcinoma is extremely rare and only four cases of it have been reported in the literature. We report a rare case of primary thymic adenocarcinoma of 4-year complete remission with concurrent chemoradiotherapy followed

Carcinoids are neuroendocrine neoplasms. Bronchial carcinoids are unusual, malignant primary neoplasms that characteristically involve the central airways and typically exhibit well-defined margins and bronchial-related growth. Bronchial carcinoids include low-grade typical carcinoids and the more aggressive atypical carcinoids. These tumors usually affect patients in the 3rd through 7th decades of life who are often symptomatic with cough, hemoptysis, or obstructive pneumonia. Bronchial carcinoids radiologically manifest as hilar or perihilar masses, with or without associated atelectasis, pn

We report the results of a study performed in the thoracic surgery department of Hospital General Universitario of Valencia from October 1989 to December 1996. Of the 621 patients diagnosed of lung cancer during this period, 320 underwent the usual surgical excision, 18 were confirmed histologically as bronchial carcinoid tumors, indicating an incidence of 5.6% of all pulmonary neoplasms resected in our department. The symptoms most often reported were recurring infection (44.5%) and chest pain (33.3%). Only one patient presented carcinoid syndrome. The most common radiologic presentation was

UNLABELLED: The aim of this paper is to sustain the palliative resection in neoplasm of the esophago-gastric junction, as a surgical approach that allows a better post-operative life comfort in comparison with simple gastrostomy. 62 observations with proximal neoplasm of the stomach (12.5%) were identified between January 1996-August 2001, representing 12.5% of the 496 patients with gastric neoplasm admitted in our unit in the same period. Out of these 62 cases, 55 (88.71%) underwent surgical procedures. Our attitude was aggressive in 25 cases. 40.32%, including the locally advanced lesions wi

A 21-year-old American Saddlebred mare died with a history of weight loss and breathing difficulties of 1 month duration. Post-mortem examination revealed a copious pleural effusion with multifocal to coalescing numerous white to grey nodular masses on the serosal surface of the pericardium, lungs and thoracic cavity. In addition, the left thyroid gland was markedly enlarged. A thoracic mesothelioma and C-cell adenoma with amyloid deposits of the left thyroid gland were diagnosed by histopathology and confirmed by immunohistochemistry employing antibodies against cytokeratin (CK), vimentin and

Primary Plasma cell leukaemia (pPCL) is a rare plasma cell (PC) malignancy. The strict criteria for the diagnosis is an absolute PC number greater 2 × 10(9)/L or a plasmocytosis accounting for > 20% of the differential white cell count that does not arise from a pre-existing multiple myeloma. pPCL was associated with aggressive clinic-biological features. Primary Plasma cell leukaemia is more characterised by an extra medullar involvement such as hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, lepto-meningeal infiltration or extramedullary plasmocytomas. The prognosis of pPCL is very poor. We rep

The zosteriform pattern is an infrequent cutaneous finding in oncologic patients who have a skin metastasis from a different primary source. Herein we report a case of adenocarcinoma of the lung which presented with zoster-like lesions along the thoracic dermatome. The histopathology indicated a metastatic neoplasm with variable glandular formations. Immunohistochemistry results pointed to the diagnosis of metastasized lung cancer. We suggest physicians should consider this rare diagnosis when experiencing similar cases.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence, distribution, risk factors, and clinical outcome associated with the detection of unsuspected pulmonary emboli (PE) in routine thoracic MDCT examinations of pediatric oncology patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used our hospital information system to retrospectively identify all consecutively registered pediatric oncology patients 18 years old and younger who underwent contrast-enhanced thoracic MDCT for indications other than PE from July 2004 to May 2008. Two pediatric radiologists in consensus reviewed diagnostic-qualit

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a malignant epithelial tumor that predominantly originates in the salivary glands of the head and neck. However, ACC arising in the thoracic cavity is a rare entity. Diagnosis of primary esophageal ACC (EACC) involves use of gastrointestinal endoscopic ultrasound fine-needle aspiration; however a low diagnostic yield has been reported in the literature. We describe an uncommon presentation of EACC debuting with predominant airway obstructive symptoms and diagnosed through endobronchial ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration. We propose the use of an endobron

Mediastinal fine needle aspirations are routinely encountered in cytopathology practice. Mediastinal lesions may pose diagnostic challenges owing to their rarity and locations associated with the complexity of the mediastinal anatomic structures in the thoracic cavity. Diagnosing mediastinal lesions and guiding patient management usually require correlating with clinical and radiologic findings, being familiar with cytomorphologic features and appropriately triaging the diagnostic material for ancillary testing. This review proposes a practical approach to interpret mediastinal fine needle asp

PEComas are a group of very rare mesenchymal neoplasms, which express myogenic and melanocytic markers, such as HMB-45 and actin. Situs inversus totalis represents a complete left to right side transposition of the asymmetrical thoracic and abdominal organs and incorporates dextrocardia. The presence of uterus PEComa in the setting of situs inversus totalis is extremely rare. Here, we report a case of PEComa of uterus with coexistence of situs inversus totalis and review the literatures. To the best of our knowledge this is the fist report of a uterus PEComa patient with situs inversus totalis

Meningiomas represent about one sixth of all primary neoplasms of the central nervous system. They rarely metastasize outside the intracranial compartment. There are no clear criteria to identify the subset of aggressive tumors which recur locally or metastasize. Histological tumor grade is the most important predictor of recurrence or metastases. We report an unusual case of recurrent metastasis in an extrapleural location and review the literature. Our patient developed recurrent thoracic metastases from an intracranial benign meningioma after a disease-free interval of 8 years. She was succ

The paper deals with analysis of data on 37 cases of scapular neoplasms who had undergone such radical function--saving surgery as interscapular-thoracic resection ( Tikhov - Linberg 's operation) (27) or scapulectomy (10). Modifications of both procedures developed by the authors are described. Their application was followed by an improved functional status as compared with other surgical procedures. Oncological status of 30 cases of primary scapular malignancies is discussed: 23 patients were recurrence- and metastasis-free during a follow-up period of 10 months-18 years (21 patients were op

A 7-year-and-8-month-old, male degu (Octodon degus) with anorexia, depression, and labored breathing was found to have a thoracic effusion and enlargement of the right testis on radiographic examination. Despite treatment, the animal died. At necropsy, hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, and multifocal nodules on the intestinal serosa and mesentery were observed. Histologically, the foci were densely cellular invasive neoplasms composed of sheets of round to polygonal cells, with occasional multinucleated giant cells. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were immunopositive for ionized calcium-

Periosteal reaction may result from multiple causes including infection, trauma, medications, and neoplasms. One important etiology that must be considered in the differential diagnosis of symmetric periosteal reaction, especially in immunocompromised patients, is voriconazole use. We present a case of a 65-year-old man who underwent liver transplantation complicated by acute hypoxic respiratory failure and Aspergillus infection. Long term voriconazole therapy was initiated with resultant development of thoracic periosteal reaction which improved following discontinuation of the medication. Gi

Pleuropulmonary synovial sarcoma is a rare malignancy that often presents like any other thoracic tumor with symptoms such as chest pain or cough. Here we describe 4 young adults who underwent surgery for apparently benign recurrent pneumothoraces and who, unexpectedly, were found upon histologic and molecular examination of the resection specimen to have cystic primary pleuropulmonary synovial sarcoma. These cases highlight (a) the importance of cytogenetic analysis in making the diagnosis, as confusion with other spindle cell sarcomas or cystic neoplasms can occur and (b) the importance of t

Oncology patients often experience urgent or emergent medical complications that are a direct or indirect result of the underlying malignant condition and are first identified or clarified on radiologic imaging studies. The aim of this review is to identify, discuss, and illustrate some of the major thoracic complications in patients with primary intrathoracic or extrathoracic neoplasms; particular focus is placed on issues in which radiologic imaging may have a significant impact on patient management, including superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome, post-obstructive pneumonia, diaphragmatic para…
