Tick-bite fever in South Africa. The occurrence of severe cases on the Witwatersrand.

Tick-bite fever, the variety of tick typhus occurring in southern Africa, is caused by Rickettsia conori var. pijperi and is transmitted by hard or ixodid ticks. It is usually a mild disease, especially in children and young adults, but in middle-aged and elderly patients (and sometimes in young adults) it may assume a severe form. This is characterized by high fever, severe headache, delirium, stupor and occasionally coma, and a profuse maculopapular rash which becomes haemorrhagic and is associated with petechiae in the skin and later, but rarely, by the development of gangrene of the finger

IxsS7: A novel biomarker for Ixodes scapularis tick bite exposure in humans.

Ixodes scapularis is a primary vector of several important tick-borne pathogens including Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the causative bacterial genospecies complex of Lyme disease, Babesia microti, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Borrelia miyamotoi, Ehrlichia muris eauclarensis, and Powassan virus. Salivary compounds secreted by I. scapularis during blood feeding are immunogenic and can elicit robust antibody responses in humans which can potentially be leveraged as surrogate markers of prior tick bite exposure. In this study, we investigate the potential of a tick secreted salivary serine prote

[African tick bite fever--rickettsiosis after holiday in South Africa].

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 61-year-old female patient presented with multiple tick bites. Some of them turned into skin ulcera. The patient acquired the tick bites during a stay in South Africa for several weeks. EXAMINATIONS AND DIAGNOSIS: According to the history and typical skin manifestations, a tick borne infection (rickettsiosis) was diagnosed and serologically confirmed. TREATMENT AND CLINICAL COURSE: The empiric treatment with doxycycline resulted in a fast regression of the skin ulcera. CONCLUSION: Rickettsial infections can be diagnosed in the presence of typical skin manifes…

Confirmation of tick bite by detection of antibody to Ixodes calreticulin salivary protein.

Ticks introduce a variety of pharmacologically active molecules into their host during attachment and feeding in order to obtain a blood meal. People who are repeatedly exposed to ticks may develop an immune response to tick salivary proteins. Despite this response, people usually are unaware of having been bitten, especially if they are not repeatedly exposed to ticks. In order to develop a laboratory marker of tick exposure that would be useful in understanding the epidemiology of tick-borne infection and the immune response to tick bite, we developed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (EL

Risk of Borrelia burgdorferi infection in western Switzerland following a tick bite.

The aim of this study was to define the risk of developing Lyme borreliosis after a tick bite. A survey was conducted from 1993 to 1995 in the western part of Switzerland in a group of patients who presented for treatment of a recent tick bite. Only patients with negative serological tests (enzyme-linked fluorescent assay screening test, and IgG and IgM immunoblots) at the first consultation and for whom a second blood sample was available 2 months later were included in the study. Of the 376 patients included, 266 had no clinical manifestation (group 1) and 110 had a small local cutaneous rea

Development of erythema migrans in spite of treatment with antibiotics after a tick bite.

OBJECTIVES: The recent information on the appearance of erythema migrans despite prophylaxis with 200 mg of doxycycline was the stimulus for a search among our patients for those who developed the skin lesion regardless of receiving antibiotics after a tick bite. METHODS: Data were reviewed for adult patients with erythema migrans diagnosed at our institution from 1994 to July 2001, targeting those who received antibiotics after a tick bite. RESULTS: Seven of 5056 (0.14%) patients, diagnosed with typical erythema migrans, developed the skin lesion despite receiving antibiotics after a tick b

Tick Bite Risk and Tick-Borne Disease Perceptions of School District Administrators in the Mid-Atlantic United States.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease is a common tick-borne disease in the northeastern and midwestern United States. School-aged children aged 5-15 years are at high risk for contracting Lyme disease. Many school campuses in the mid-Atlantic United States are in areas that are near, or border with, wooded habitat. METHODS: We surveyed school administrators to determine the perception of risk of tick encounters and tick control methods implemented on school campuses in the mid-Atlantic. RESULTS: Responses from Pennsylvania and New Jersey districts indicate school district administrators had knowledge of

Using citizen science to describe the prevalence and distribution of tick bite and exposure to tick-borne diseases in the United States.

Tick-borne pathogens are increasing their range and incidence in North America as a consequence of numerous factors including improvements in diagnostics and diagnosis, range expansion of primary vectors, changes in human behavior, and an increasing understanding of the diversity of species of pathogens that cause human disease. Public health agencies have access to human incidence data on notifiable diseases e.g., Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, and often local pathogen prevalence in vector populations. However, data on exposure to vectors and pathogens can be diffi

Pilot study assessing the effectiveness of long-lasting permethrin-impregnated clothing for the prevention of tick bites.

INTRODUCTION: Tick-borne diseases such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and ehrlichiosis are a significant concern for many thousands of workers who have frequent and unavoidable exposure to tick-infested habitats. Many North Carolina state employees with outdoor occupations report multiple tick bites each year, indicating that existing tick preventive strategies may be underutilized or ineffective. Treatment of clothing with permethrin, a nontoxic chemical with insecticidal, knockdown, and repellent properties, is highly effective against ticks. However, most permethrin products…
