"The Time Has Arrived": Perceptions of Behavioral Adjustments in the Context of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Availability Among Adolescents in South Africa.

Antiretroviral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) holds enormous potential to reduce HIV acquisition in key populations globally. We conducted an exploratory PrEP acceptability study using qualitative methodology among adolescents and service providers in the Western Cape Province of South Africa to inform future PrEP implementation challenges in South Africa and other high-prevalence African countries. Semistructured focus groups and in-depth individual interviews were conducted among 57 adolescents 16-17 years of age, living with and without HIV, and 25 clinical service providers. Adolescents a

Attachment-related differences in perceptions of an initial peer interaction emerge over time: evidence of reconstructive memory processes in adolescents.

This study examined whether attachment, assessed using the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI; George, Kaplan, & Main, 1996) was linked to how adolescents reconstructed their memory for an initial interaction with an unfamiliar peer. Adolescents (N = 189, 62% female) completed a 10-min laboratory task with a student whom they did not know. Immediately following this task, adolescents rated their perceptions of the interaction. Adolescents completed the same perception measure 2 weeks later. Although adolescents classified as secure and insecure on the AAI did not differ in how they perceived unfa

How Mountain Park Spatial Environments Affect Physiological and Psychological Perceptions of Young Adults Based on Real Time Sensor Monitoring.

Gathering spaces within urban parks serve as primary outdoor leisure venues, playing a critical role in facilitating social interaction and restoring the physical and mental well-being of this demographic. This study uses the example of Pipa Mountain Park in Chongqing, China to explore the psychological and physiological perceptual effects of spatial environmental characteristics on young adults in four typical gathering spaces: path platform, elevated point, viewing boundary, and key node. To this end, we employed onsite experimental methods using wearable ergonomic devices to collect partici

A mixed-methods study examining perceptions of fear of falling among community-dwelling people who use wheelchairs full-time.

OBJECTIVE: There is growing evidence that fear of falling (FOF) is common in people who use wheelchairs full-time and negatively influence their performance of daily activities and quality of life. The purpose of this study was to gain an in-depth understanding of perceptions related to FOF among people who use wheelchairs full-time. METHODS: Mixed-method analysis was conducted using semi-structured interviews and surveys to gain insight into FOF. Surveys included demographic information; Spinal Cord Injury-Fall Concerns Scale (SCI-FCS); a questionnaire that directly assesses FOF and associat

Outcomes and Healthcare Provider Perceptions of Real-Time Continuous Glucose Monitoring (rtCGM) in Patients With Diabetes and COVID-19 Admitted to the ICU.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed the clinical utility and accuracy of real-time continuous glucose monitoring (rtCGM) (Dexcom G6) in managing diabetes patients with severe COVID-19 infection following admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS: We present retrospective analysis of masked rtCGM in 30 patients with severe COVID-19. rtCGM was used during the first 24 hours for comparison with arterial-line point of care (POC) values, where clinicians utilized rtCGM data to adjust insulin therapy in patients if rtCGM values were within 20% of point-of-care (POC) values during the masked period. A Review on Time Perception of Death Row Inmates' Denials in Their Last Statements in the Context of Forensic Linguistics: The Sample of Texas Huntsville Unit.

This study aims to find out the time perception used in the denials in the last statements of 70 death row inmates, who were executed in Texas Huntsville Unit between 1982 and 2016. To accomplish this, the tenses in their last statements were specified, and their distribution was demonstrated on a horizontal timeline. Document analysis, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was utilized as the data collection tool of the study. The main data obtained from the results of the study suggest that the following 429 death row inmates out of 537 used their right for the last statement; ho…

Envisioning the Future in Times of Global Uncertainty: Latent Profiles of Societal Threat Perceptions and Future-Oriented Resources Among University Students.

Young adults today are required to envision and plan for the future in a context marked by interconnected societal threats, such as climate change, geopolitical conflicts, and economic instability, giving rise to a condition of polycrisis. Understanding how these threats are perceived and their relationship with future-oriented psychological functioning is essential for promoting adaptive development during emerging adulthood. This study used a person-centered approach to identify different profiles of societal threat perception among university students and examine their links to social resou

A stitch in time saves nine: Perceptions about colorectal cancer screening after a non-cancer colonoscopy result. Qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: To explore perceptions of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening among participants who have experienced a 'false alarm' for CRC, and to explore perceptions about the relevance of screening for themselves or others. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with screening participants who had participated in the Danish CRC screening program and experienced a 'false alarm' for colorectal cancer. A thematic analysis was performed, based on an interpretive tradition of ethnography. RESULTS: Perceptions about CRC screening after a non-cancer colonoscopy result were characterized by trust in the

Comparative perceptions of wait times for family planning services among contraceptive users and mystery clients in Kisumu, Kenya: a mixed methods analysis.

BACKGROUND: Long wait times at health facilities negatively affect contraceptive access and cause dissatisfaction with care. Conventional data collection methods, such as population-based surveys and exit interviews, may not accurately capture wait times due to methodological challenges including recall and social desirability bias. METHODS: We compared mystery client observations conducted in all public facilities in Kisumu County, Kenya with data from a population-based sample of women of reproductive age (18-49, n = 744) in Kisumu County. We compared recalled wait times from women who used

"Pandemic Public Health Paradox": Time Series Analysis of the 2009/10 Influenza A / H1N1 Epidemiology, Media Attention, Risk Perception and Public Reactions in 5 European Countries.

In 2009, influenza A H1N1 caused the first pandemic of the 21st century. Although a vaccine against this influenza subtype was offered before or at the onset of the second epidemic wave that caused most of the fatal cases in Europe, vaccination rates for that season were lower than expected. We propose that the contradiction between high risk of infection and low use of available prevention measures represents a pandemic public health paradox. This research aims for a better understanding of this paradox by exploring the time-dependent interplay among changing influenza epidemiology, media att

How do experiences and perceptions unfold in adolescents with longstanding non-traumatic knee conditions over time? A qualitative repeated interview study.

Adolescents' perceived uncertainty regarding diagnosis and its causes are significant barriers to acceptance of their knee pain and formation of self-management skills. This study uses a repeated interview design to explore how adolescents with longstanding non-traumatic knee pain experience and perceive changes over time in their condition, needs, understanding of knee pain, and self-management. Ten adolescents with longstanding, non-traumatic knee pain were included. Each adolescent participated in two semi-structured online interviews. The first interview took place 1-3 days after the consu

Parental and professional perceptions of informed consent and participation in a time-critical neonatal trial: a mixed-methods study in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

INTRODUCTION: Time-critical neonatal trials in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs) raise several ethical issues. Using a qualitative-dominant mixed-methods design, we explored informed consent process in Hypothermia for encephalopathy in low and middle-income countries (HELIX) trial conducted in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. METHODS: Term infants with neonatal encephalopathy, aged less than 6 hours, were randomly allocated to cooling therapy or usual care, following informed parental consent. The consenting process was audio-video (A-V) recorded in all cases. We analysed A-V records of

"The whole wall fell apart, and I felt free for the first time": Men's perceptions of helpful responses during discussion of child sexual abuse.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing awareness of the prevalence and consequences of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) for boys. Disclosure experiences often impact long-term functioning following CSA. Current understanding around disclosure has evolved from a singular act of telling to a broader, reciprocal process that can include discussion. However, there is limited empirical evidence about what constitutes a helpful response from others during the discussion of CSA for men. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the characteristics of a helpful response during the discussion of CSA among a large sample of

"I Accept Them, They Accept Me, We Enjoy Our Time Together": Autistic Adults' Preferences and Perceptions of Relationships With Other Autistic People.

Autistic adults may have distinct relationship preferences and perceptions compared to non-autistic individuals. The Double Empathy Problem suggests that autistic people often experience greater mutual understanding and connection when interacting with other autistic individuals. While some research has examined these relationships, few studies have focused on a range of relationship types. This study aimed to address this gap by qualitatively exploring how autistic adults prefer and perceive their relationships with other autistic people across friendships, romantic relationships, mentoring/s

Perceptions of preparedness, timing of cancer diagnosis, and objective emergency preparedness among gynecological cancer patients in Puerto Rico before and after Hurricane Maria.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the impact of cancer diagnosis status, individual feelings of preparedness, and other covariates on objective emergency preparedness among women diagnosed with gynecological cancers before or after the 2017 Hurricanes Irma and Maria in Puerto Rico. METHODS: This study included 240 women who were interviewed by telephone from 9/2019-11/2020. Objective emergency preparedness was assessed using a list of six items. Subjective emergency preparedness was assessed by asking the women how prepared they felt (well, somewhat, or not at all) to face an emergency. Cru

Closed vs open surgical exposure of palatally displaced canines: surgery time, postoperative complications, and patients' perceptions: a multicentre, randomized, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Closed and open surgical techniques are two different main approaches to surgical exposure of palatally displaced canines (PDCs). Because there is insufficient evidence to support one technique over the other, there is a need for randomized controlled trials. OBJECTIVES: To compare surgery time, complications and patients' perceptions between closed and open surgical techniques in PDCs. TRIAL DESIGN: The trial was a multicentre, randomized, controlled trial with two parallel groups randomly allocated in a 1:1 ratio. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Study participants were 119 consecutive p
