Adolescent stress experiences over time study (ASETS) protocol: design and methods of a prospective longitudinal study of sexual minority adolescents in the USA.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual minority adolescents (SMA) report higher rates of anxiety, self-harm, depression and suicide than heterosexual peers. These disparities appear to persist into adulthood and may worsen for certain subgroups, yet the mechanisms that drive these concerns remain poorly understood. Minority stress theory, the predominant model for understanding these disparities, posits that poorer outcomes are due to the stress of living in a violently homophobic and discriminatory culture. Although numerous studies report associations between minority stress and behavioural health in adolesce

Direct measurement of left ventricular ejection time from echocardiographic posterior wall excursion time: validation of technique.

Echocardiography has proven useful in determining systolic time intervals. Left ventricular mean velocity of circumferential fiber shortening has been calculated utilizing the left ventricular ejection time measured in several manners, usually from the echocardiographic aortic valve opening time or indirect carotid pulse tracing. Left ventricular ejection time is related to the time of posterior wall excursion in patients without conduction defects or segmental wall motion abnormalities. Thus, a single echocardiographic view can measure ventricular diameters and approximate ejection time simul

Passive intervertebral restraint is different in patients with treatment-resistant chronic nonspecific low back pain: a retrospective cohort study and control comparison.

PURPOSE: In vivo studies of continuous lumbar sagittal plane motion have found passive intervertebral motion to be more uneven in patients with chronic nonspecific low back pain (CNSLBP) than healthy controls, but the mechanisms are unclear. This study aimed to compare patients with CNSLBP with a matched group of pain-free controls for intervertebral restraint during passive recumbent bending. METHODS: Seventeen patients with CNSLBP and minimal disc degeneration who had quantitative fluoroscopy investigations were matched to 17 healthy controls from a database acquired using the same imaging

Low-frequency oscillations in frontocentral EEG responses associated with auditory motion processing.

This study investigated the oscillatory dynamics underlying sound motion processing in a delayed motion paradigm. Auditory motion was simulated by linear changes in interaural time difference. EEG was recorded while stimuli moved at seven velocities from 90 deg/s to 450 deg/s plus an abrupt displacement. We aimed to determine how the timing and magnitude of oscillatory responses scale with motion velocity, and how they relate to motion-onset response (MOR) components. The analysis focused on MOR deflections (cN1 and cP2) and oscillatory dynamics measured via event-related spectral perturbation

Cervical spine kinematics after anterior cervical discectomy with or without implantation of a mobile cervical disc prosthesis; an RCT.

BACKGROUND: When surgically treating cervical degenerative disc disease, the most commonly performed procedure is anterior cervical discectomy. This procedure is performed with, or without fusion promoting methods. For both options the rate of fusion is high and there is much debate whether fusion of the treated segment is a contributing factor to accelerated degeneration of adjacent motion segments. In an effort to prevent degeneration of adjacent segments (ASDeg) due to loss of mobility at the operated level, cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) was introduced. To evaluate the effectiveness of C

Assessment of cerebral oxygenation response to hemodialysis using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS): Challenges and solutions.

To date, the clinical use of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to detect cerebral ischemia has been largely limited to surgical settings, where motion artifacts are minimal. In this study, we present novel techniques to address the challenges of using NIRS to monitor ambulatory patients with kidney disease during approximately eight hours of hemodialysis (HD) treatment. People with end-stage kidney disease who require HD are at higher risk for cognitive impairment and dementia than age-matched controls. Recent studies have suggested that HD-related declines in cerebral blood flow mi

Experimental investigation of dynamic real-time rotation-including dose reconstruction during prostate tracking radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Hypofractionation in prostate radiotherapy is of increasing interest. Steep dose gradients and a large weight on each individual fraction emphasize the need for motion management. Real-time motion management techniques such as multileaf collimator (MLC) tracking or couch tracking typically adjust for translational motion while rotations remain uncompensated with unknown dosimetric impact. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to demonstrate and validate dynamic real-time rotation-including dose reconstruction during radiotherapy experiments with and without MLC and couch tracking.

Fast inter-frame motion correction in contrast-free ultrasound quantitative microvasculature imaging using deep learning.

Contrast-free ultrasound quantitative microvasculature imaging shows promise in several applications, including the assessment of benign and malignant lesions. However, motion represents one of the major challenges in imaging tumor microvessels in organs that are prone to physiological motions. This study aims at addressing potential microvessel image degradation in in vivo human thyroid due to its proximity to carotid artery. The pulsation of the carotid artery induces inter-frame motion that significantly degrades microvasculature images, resulting in diagnostic errors. The main objective of

Strategies to improve impact efficiency in football kicking.

In football, kicking with high ball velocity can increase scoring opportunities and reduce the likelihood of interception. Efficient energy transfer from foot to ball during impact is important to attain a high ball velocity. It is considered impact efficiency can be increased by reducing the change in ankle plantarflexion during foot-ball impact. However, conflicting evidence exists, questioning its effectiveness as a coaching cue. The aim of the present study was to systematically analyse joint stiffness, foot velocity and impact location with a mechanical kicking machine to determine if cha

MRI-Guided Reduced-Volume Radiation Therapy for Early-Stage Glottic Cancer:A Prospective Phase 1 Trial With Quantification of Laryngeal Motion.

PURPOSE: Five to 7 weeks of whole-larynx radiation therapy (RT) is standard for treatment of early-stage glottic cancer. Previous studies evaluated computed tomography-guided hypofractionated or stereotactic treatment to a smaller volume. Magnetic resonance-guided RT (MRgRT) allows real-time motion tracking and gating by continuously imaging the larynx. We performed the first prospective study of MRgRT in patients with early-stage glottic cancer with quantification of laryngeal motion. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This phase 1 trial evaluated MRgRT in patients with stage I/II squamous cell glottic

Modeling intra-fractional abdominal configuration changes using breathing motion-corrected radial MRI.

Abdominal organ motions introduce geometric uncertainties to gastrointestinal radiotherapy. This study investigated slow drifting motion induced by changes of internal anatomic organ arrangements using a 3D radial MRI sequence with a scan length of 20 min. Breathing motion and cyclic GI motion were first removed through multi-temporal resolution image reconstruction. Slow drifting motion analysis was performed using an image time series consisting of 72 image volumes with a temporal sampling rate of 17 s. B-spline deformable registration was performed to align image volumes of the time series

MR-ARFI and Beyond: Characterizing the Temporal Dynamics of Acoustic Radiation Force in Human Brain.

PURPOSE: Magnetic Resonance Acoustic Radiation Force Imaging (MR-ARFI) encodes focused ultrasound (FUS)-induced tissue displacements to MR phase shifts. Because these phase shifts are small, optimizing displacement sensitivity and minimizing motion artifacts requires characterization of the temporal dynamics of acoustic radiation force (ARF). Beyond sequence design, such characterization enables MR-ARFI to serve as a probe of brain viscoelastic behavior and can inform the design of therapeutic ultrasound pulsing schemes by quantifying how rapidly tissue deforms and relaxes. METHODS: We develo

The contrast sensitivity function of the praying mantis Sphodromantis lineola.

The detection of visual motion and its direction is a fundamental task faced by several visual systems. The motion detection system of insects has been widely studied with the majority of studies focussing on flies and bees. Here we characterize the contrast sensitivity of motion detection in the praying mantis Sphodromantis lineola, an ambush predator that stays stationary for long periods of time while preying on fast-moving prey. In this, its visual behaviour differs from previously studied insects and we might therefore expect its motion detection system to differ from theirs. To investiga
