The effects of trichloroethylene (TCE) on microbial community composition were analyzed by reverse sample genome probing. Soil enrichments were incubated in dessicators containing an organic phase of either 1 or 10% (w/w) toluene in vacuum pump oil, delivering constant equilibrium aqueous concentrations of 16 and 143 mg/l, respectively. Whole cells of Pseudomonas putida containing toluene dioxygenase were able to remove all detectable trichloroethylene (TCE) from assay mixtures. The capacity of cells to remove TCE was 77 microM/mg of protein with an initial rate of removal of 5.2 nmol/min/ng of protein. TCE oxidation resulted in a decrease in the growth rate of cultures and caused rapid cell death. BACKGROUND: Toluene is one of the most widely abused inhaled drugs due to its acute neurologic effects including euphoria and subsequent depression. However, dangerous metabolic abnormalities are associated to acute toluene intoxication. It has been previously reported that rhabdomyolysis and acute hepatorenal injury could be hallmarks of the condition, and could constitute risk factors for poor outcomes. The two Sn-O-C-C-C-O chelate rings in the title compound, [Sn(C(15)H(11)O(2))(2)Cl(2)]·0.5C(7)H(8), adopt envelope conformations, with the Sn atom deviating from the least-squares plane passing through the C and O atoms by 0.626 (1) Å in one ring and by 0.690 (1) Å for the other. The two planes are aligned at an angle of 59.6 (1)°. The Cl atoms occupy cis positions in the octa-hedral SnCl(2)O(4) coordination environment.
