Full-mouth rehabilitation of a patient with bulimia nervosa. A case report.

Anorexia and bulimia nervosa are eating disorders seen mainly in adolescents or young patients. The dentist should be in the position to recognize early signs of the disorder and alert the patient (and the patient's parents, if necessary) of the possible physical, psychologi cal, and dental consequences. Such dental treatment may help motivate the patient to confront the problem. In this paper the full-mouth rehabilitation, using a combination of galvano- and metal-ceramic restorations, of a young patient suffering from bulimia nervosa is described.

Continuous eruption of some adult human teeth of ancient populations.

It has been argued that the teeth maintain a potential for eruption throughout life and that eruption takes place whenever an opportunity occurs. Thus continuous, active eruption would be expected when the occlusal surfaces of the teeth have been affected by severe attrition. Radiographs of teeth and jaws of adult skulls with marked attrition from the Romano-British, Anglo-Saxon and Mediaeval periods were measured using the inferior alveolar canal (IAC) as a reference structure. Statistical analysis of the measurements from 164 of the specimens showed that the worn occlusal surfaces (OS) maint

Diagnoses and Treatment of Dental Disorders in a Research Colony of Macaca fascicularis: A Case Series.

During daily routine oral examinations in a research colony of nonhuman primates (NHPs, Macaca fascicularis), a variety of oral-dental lesions were identified. A dental care program was established based on these findings. Based on the presence of dental clinical signs and their severity, 31 animals were triaged to be examined and treated by a veterinarian. Clinical examination consisted of visual inspection using a periodontal probe/explorer and full or partial mouth dental radiographs. Treatment was performed during the same procedure. Some animals had a follow-up examination including radio

Interaction of dental erosion and bruxism: the amplification of tooth wear.

Bruxism and erosion are important to identify during a dental examination. By understanding the etiologies of both processes, a management strategy can be implemented to decrease their effects. Management for bruxism, clenching, and parafunction can include medications, cognitive behavioral therapy, and dental appliances. Bruxism, clenching, and parafunction combined with dental erosion can cause dental wear to increase faster than any component alone.

Tooth wear: diet analysis and advice.

Diet analysis and advice for patients with tooth wear is potentially the most logical intervention to arrest attrition, erosion and abrasion. It is saliva that protects the teeth against corrosion by the acids which soften enamel and make it susceptible to wear. Thus the lifestyles and diet of patients at risk need to be analysed for sources of acid and reasons for lost salivary protection. Medical conditions which put patients at risk of tooth wear are principally: asthma, bulimia nervosa, caffeine addiction, diabetes mellitus, exercise dehydration, functional depression, gastroesophageal ref

Effects of brushing with a dentifrice for sensitive teeth on tubule occlusion and abrasion of dentin.

By using a dentifrice or toothpaste for sensitive teeth, the brushing-induced effects on dentinal tubule occlusion and abrasion of human sound dentin were investigated with a scanning electron microscope and a scanning laser microscope. The dentifrice contained diatomaceous earth and silica as abrasives and strontium chloride hexahydrate as an active ingredient. Thirty dentin pieces of human premolar teeth with an average of 20% occluded dentinal tubules were attached to resin plates and exposed to the oral cavities of five adult subjects for 2, 4, and 8 weeks. Brushing with and without dentif

Othodontic aspects of dental anthropology.

Variation in the size, shape, number, arrangement, and wear pattern of the teeth of man has long been an area of great interest to physical anthropologists. In this paper some of the remarkable variations to be found in the human dentition are identified and translated in orthodontic terms. Teeth are by nature imperfect structures, often just as disfigured individually as the malocclusions they form collectively. It is important that the orthodontist cultivates an anthropologist's eye for tooth variations. With this sensitivity he shall surely enlarge his understanding of the limitations of or

Dental pathologies in ten free-ranging chimpanzees from Gombe National Park, Tanzania.

The dental remains of ten adult chimpanzees from Gombe National Park, Tanzania, were examined for enamel attrition, caries, abscesses, periodontal disease, and tooth loss. Age was the underlying factor in the development of dental pathology, in that enamel wear was present to some extent in all ten but was uniformly severe only in the three for whom estimated age at death was 39-43 years. In turn, enamel wear appears to have been the direct cause of abscess development, periodontal disease, and tooth loss. Periodontal disease was commonly expressed as alveolar resorption, particularly around t
