Evaluation of the relation between the maxillary sinus and the posterior teeth using digital panoramic radiography.

This research aimed to determine the relationship between the maxillary posterior teeth and maxillary sinus floor (MSF), as well as the impact of nearby tooth loss on the space between MSF and posterior maxillary roots. A number of 120 digital panoramic radiographs were obtained from the archives of several clinics in Al-Najaf, Iraq, with the overall teeth examined in these radiographs including 236 of the 1st premolars, 227 of the 2nd premolars, 227 of the 1st molars, and 231 of the 2nd molars, from the right and left sides. The distances between the apices of the teeth and the maxillary sinu

Autotransplantation of premolars and space closure in a patient with inflamed sinuses.

Congenital absence of permanent teeth can be treated by means of dental implants and prosthetics. Tooth autotransplantation is an alternative in growing patients because continued eruption of the transplanted tooth and associated alveolar bone growth can be expected. This clinical report presents tooth autotransplantation in a 10-year-old boy with chronic maxillary rhinosinusitis, diagnosed by the department of otorhinolaryngology. The patient's mandibular second premolars were transplanted to a congenitally edentulous maxillary premolar region. There was insufficient alveolar bone during tran

Electronic apex locator: a useful tool for root canal treatment in the primary dentition.

The purpose of this study was to test the ability of an electronic apex locator, Root ZX to measure the root canal length in primary teeth with partial resorption. Twenty extracted primary molars were embedded in an alginate model imitating in vivo conditions. Root ZX and radiographic measurements were compared in dry and wet environments to the actual tooth length. Root ZX identified the tooth length at the most coronal portion of the resorption. The content of the root canal did not influence the results. No statistical differences were found between electronic, radiographic and actual tooth

Orbital Apex Syndrome Secondary to a Dental Implant Infection Caused by Staphylococcus lugdunensis.

Orbital apex syndrome (OAS) is a rare complication of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis. An 87-year-old woman with gingivitis caused by a dental implant infection developed diplopia, followed by a rapid visual deterioration and limited extraocular movement in her left eye. Imaging revealed penetration of the upper left first molar into the maxillary sinus and inflammation involving the extraocular muscles and the orbital apex. Staphylococcus lugdunensis (S. lugdunensis) was cultured from the patient's sinus. Steroid pulse therapy, antimicrobial treatment, tooth extraction, and sinus irrigation p

Effects of root morphology on stress distribution at the root apex.

It is thought that the stress concentration at the root apex caused by orthodontic force induces root resorption. The purpose of this study was to investigate stress distribution at the root in cases of deviated root shapes using finite element models (FEMs). To clarify this, five three-dimensional FEMs divided by deviated root shape (normal, short, blunt, bent root apex, pipette shape) were constructed and, experimental orthodontic forces, applied in a vertical (intrusive) and horizontal (lingual) direction to the tooth axis. In the short-root model, significant stress was concentrated at the

Effect of different irrigation solutions and coronal barrier materials used in regenerative endodontic treatment procedure on the fracture resistance of simulated open apexed maxillary central incisors: an in vitro study.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different irrigation solutions and coronal barrier materials (CBMs) used in the regenerative endodontic treatment (RET) of simulated open-apex maxillary central incisors on the fracture resistance (FR) of the teeth by comparing them before and after chewing simulation (CS) application. The apical part of the roots of 132 permanent maxillary central teeth was cut, and a standard root length of 12 mm was obtained. Teeth were randomly divided into 16 groups (n = 9 per group) and 4 control groups (n = 6 per group). The root canals of the teeth, except for

Orthodontic extrusion of subgingivally fractured incisor before restoration. A case report: 3-years follow-up.

Orthodontic forced eruption may be a suitable approach without risking the esthetic appearance in tooth fracture below the gingival attachment or alveolar bone crest. Extrusion of such teeth allows elevating the fracture line above the epithelial attachment and so the proper finishing margins can be prepared. Restoration after orthodontic eruption may present a more conservative treatment choice in young patients compared with the prosthetic restoration after extraction. This case describes a multidisciplinary approach using the orthodontic forced eruption facilitating the composite restoratio

A scanning electron microscopic study of hypercementosis.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate morphological characteristics of teeth with hypercementosis that are relevant to endodontic practice. Twenty-eight extracted teeth with hypercementosis had their root apexes analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The teeth were divided according to tooth groups and type of hypercementosis. The following aspects were examined under SEM: the contour and regularity of the root surface; presence of resorption; presence and number of apical foramina, and the diameter of the main foramen. The progression of club shape hypercementosis was directly as

Immunohistochemical localization of syndecan-1 in the dental follicle of postnatal mouse teeth.

BACKGROUND: Syndecans are cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycans that modulate the action of growth factors and extracellular matrix components. Syndecan-1 plays important roles during early tooth development, and it is expressed in the dental follicle of fetal tooth germ. However, no studies have followed its expression in the dental follicle during the postnatal period. We hypothesized that syndecan-1 protein expression in the dental follicle may be important for postnatal tooth development, and, thus, examined its expression patterns. METHODS: Syndecan-1 protein expression in the denta

Persistent endodontic lesion due to complex cementodentinal tears in a maxillary central incisor--a case report.

The cementodentinal tear is rarely detected by noninvasive procedures owing to its clinical picture simulating a root fracture or a periodontal or endodontic lesion. We present a case of complex cementodentinal tears in a 79-year-old woman who presented a repeated swelling at the labial mucosa of the left maxillary central incisor for 6 months. Periapical radiographs demonstrated a vertical radiolucent fracture line extending from the root apex along the mesial aspect of the root to near the middle portion of the root of the left maxillary central incisor. Because endodontic re-treatment faile
