The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the protective effect of short-pulsed CO2 9.3 μm laser irradiation against erosion in human enamel without and combined with TiF4 and AmF/NaF/SnCl2 applications, respectively, as well as compared to the protective effect of these fluoride treatments alone. After polishing, ninety enamel samples (3 × 3mm) were used for 9 different treatment groups: 4% TiF4 gel (pH 1.5, 24,533 ppm F-); AmF/NaF/SnCl2 rinse (pH 4.5; 500 ppm F-, 800 ppm Sn2); CO2 laser (average power 0.58 W); CO2 laser (0.58 W) + TiF4; CO2 laser (0.58 W) + AmF/NaF/SnCl2; CO2 laser (0.6

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: Dental erosion occurs after exposure to intrinsic or extrinsic acids. Exposure to intrinsic gastrointestinal acids is associated with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, rumination syndrome, or gastroesophageal reflux. Extrinsic dietary acids from foods or beverages also can cause erosion, particularly when exposure is prolonged by holding or swishing behaviors.
CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians should screen patients exhibiting dental erosion for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, rumination syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Clinicians should screen patients withou

Eating disorders are a potentially life-threatening group of mental disorders, which affect a patient's relationship with food and their body. This manifests itself through chaotic and disordered eating habits. One such eating disorder is bulimia nervosa, which has a lifetime prevalence of 1%. While there is consensus that bulimic behaviour directly causes dental erosion due to vomiting and acidic food choices, there is less clear evidence for a direct link between bulimia nervosa and dental caries, although there does still appear to be an association. Reduced salivary flow rate is a common f

As soon as saliva contacts the teeth surface, salivary proteins adhere to the tooth surface to form acquired salivary pellicle. The formation of this acquired salivary pellicle is a dynamic and selective process of macromolecular adsorption and desorption. Although acquired salivary pellicle contains proteins and peptides, it also contains lipids, and other macro-molecules, all of which contribute to its protective properties. Acquired salivary pellicle is related to the development of common oral diseases, such as erosion, dental caries, and periodontal disease. Acquired salivary pellicle act

OBJECTIVES: Dentine hypersensitivity (DH) manifests as a transient but arresting oral pain. The incidence is thought to be rising, particularly in young adults, due to increases in consumption of healthy, yet erosive, diets. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of DH and relative importance of risk factors, in 18-35 year old Europeans.
METHODS: In 2011, 3187 adults were enrolled from general dental practices in France, Spain, Italy, United Kingdom, Finland, Latvia and Estonia. DH was clinically evaluated by cold air tooth stimulation, patient pain rating (yes/no), accompanied by investig

Acids of intrinsic and extrinsic origin are thought to be the main etiologic factors for dental erosion. There is evidence that acidic foodstuffs and beverages play a role in the development of erosion. However, the pH of a dietary substance alone is not predictive of its potential to cause erosion as other factors modify the erosive process. These factors are chemical (pKa values, adhesion and chelating properties, calcium, phosphate and fluoride content), behavioural (eating and drinking habits, life style, excessive consumption of acids) and biological (flow rate, buffering capacity, compos

Several factors can contribute to the development of noncarious cervical lesions. Therefore, these lesions can be described and classified according to their primary etiology. Traditionally, most dentists have treated noncarious cervical lesions only with restorative methods, for example, composite resin restorations. However, in many cases, a periodontal or a combined restorative/periodontal approach provides a better esthetic and functional result. In part I of this two-part report, we provide a review of noncarious cervical lesions and a series of clinical case reports showing surgical tech

BACKGROUND: The study objective was to examine the effect of arginine-sodium fluoride (Arg-NaF) varnish on preventing enamel erosion by acidic paediatric liquid medicaments (PLM).
METHODS: The treatment groups were: 1) 2% Arg-NaF; 2) 4% Arg-NaF; 3) 8% Arg-NaF; 4) NaF; 5) MI (CPP-ACFP) varnishes; and 6) no varnish. The pH of PLM (paracetamol and chlorpheniramine) was measured at baseline and after immersing the Perspex® blocks coated with varnishes at 0 min, 30 min, 1 h, and 4 h. Seventy-two enamel specimens (n = 72) were randomly divided into 2 groups by PLM and further by treatment groups. T

Within the context of preventing non-communicable diseases, the World Health Report (2002) and the WHO Global Oral Health Program (2003) put forward a new strategy of disease prevention and health promotion. Greater emphasis is placed on developing global policies in oral health promotion and oral disease prevention. The Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth (DMFT) index does not meet new challenges in the field of oral health. Dental erosion seems to be a growing problem, and in some countries, an increase in erosion of teeth is associated with an increase in the consumption of beverages containing

Diet analysis and advice for patients with tooth wear is potentially the most logical intervention to arrest attrition, erosion and abrasion. It is saliva that protects the teeth against corrosion by the acids which soften enamel and make it susceptible to wear. Thus the lifestyles and diet of patients at risk need to be analysed for sources of acid and reasons for lost salivary protection. Medical conditions which put patients at risk of tooth wear are principally: asthma, bulimia nervosa, caffeine addiction, diabetes mellitus, exercise dehydration, functional depression, gastroesophageal ref

This study investigated the effect of SnCl2/AmF pretreatment on short- and long-term bond strength of resin composite to eroded dentin mediated by two self-etch, MDP-containing adhesive systems. 184 dentin specimens were produced from extracted human molars. Half the specimens (n = 92) were artificially eroded, and half were left untreated. For both substrates, half the specimens were pretreated with SnCl2/AmF, and half were left untreated. The specimens were treated with Clearfil SE Bond or Scotchbond Universal prior to application of resin composite. Microtensile bond strength (μTBS) was mea

BACKGROUND: Dental erosion development is affected by various factors such as types and amounts of acids, drinking habits and lifestyle choices. To prevent the onset and progression, identification of early erosive lesions as well as increased knowledge of the preventive treatment possibilities is of the importance. The aim of this study is to compare the protective effects of various fluoride compounds against dental erosion utilizing an established mouse model.
METHODS: Three groups of ten young CD-1 mice were provided cola drink ad libitum during six weeks. Fluoride solutions containing me

In view of the increasing prevalence of dental erosion and erosive tooth wear, preventive approaches are increasingly becoming the focus of interest. A proven way to reduce the erosive potential of food and drinks is adding calcium. However, whole meals and the taste of calcium-enriched drinks have not been studied. This study aimed to create erosion-protective recipes for food and beverages. In part 1, erosive meals were modified with calcium-rich ingredients. In part 2, varying amounts of CaCl₂ were added to acidic drinks. A sensory panel assessed flavour. Caries-free human teeth served as e

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: Dental erosion is a multifactorial condition in which early demineralization events occur at the enamel-environment interface, highlighting the relevance of the acquired enamel pellicle (AEP) as a biological modulator of erosion susceptibility. This narrative review aimed to synthesize current biochemical and experimental evidence on AEP engineering as a preventive strategy against dental erosion, with particular emphasis on the role of vitamin E as a lipophilic modulator of the pellicle organic matrix.
DATA AND SOURCES: A structured narrative review was conducted foll
