BACKGROUND: Hyperbilirubinemia that occurs in pediatric liver diseases such as biliary atresia can result in the development of not only jaundice in the brain, eyes, and skin, but also tooth abnormalities including green pigmentation and dentin hypoplasia in the developing teeth. However, hyperbilirubinemia-induced tooth impairments remain after liver transplantation. No effective dental management to prevent hyperbilirubinemia-induced tooth impairments has been established.
METHODS: In this study, we focused on pamidronate, which is used to treat pediatric osteopenia, and investigated its ef

OBJECTIVE: Hyperbilirubinemia in patients with biliary atresia causes deciduous tooth injuries such as green pigmentation and dentin hypoplasia. In patients with biliary atresia who received liver transplantation, tooth structure appears to be recovered radiographically. Nevertheless, little is known about cellular mechanisms underlying bilirubin-induced damage and suppression of deciduous tooth formation. In this study, we examined the effects of bilirubin in stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) in vitro.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: SHED were cultured under exposure to excess o

Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) can result in the premature loss of primary anterior teeth due to an immediate avulsion, extraction later after the injury because of poor prognosis or late complications, or early exfoliation. There are a number of potential considerations or sequelae as a result of this premature loss that have been cited in the dental literature, which include esthetics, quality of life, eating, speech development, arch integrity (space loss), development and eruption of the permanent successors, and development of oral habits. This article provides a comprehensive review of

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence and gender distributions of dental anomalies in French orthodontic patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective review of the dental files of orthodontic patients was conducted to investigate the frequencies of dental anomalies. Pretreatment intraoral photographs and panoramic radiographs were analyzed. The occurrence rates of various dental anomalies (as determined by the numbers, shapes, structures, exfoliations, and eruptions of teeth) were calculated as percentages and differences in gender distribution using Chi2 and Fisher tests.
RESULTS: Fi

In crowded dental arches, the permanent lateral incisors often erupt and resorb the mesial portion of the root of deciduous canines, causing their premature loss. Therefore, knowledge on clinical aspects related to etiologic factors is necessary to pediatric orthodontists and clinical dentists for diagnosis and treatment with regard to incisor crowding and adjustment. The aim of the present study was to describe a clinical case characterized by the unilateral loss of a lower deciduous canine, offering clinical considerations on this issue and discussing the various procedures implemented to pr

The aims of this thesis were to estimate the prevalence and familial tendencies of infraocclusion of primary molars and analyse the effect of extraction on occlusal development, and to characterise histologically the ankylosis in infraoccluded primary molars and recommend guidelines for treatment. The thesis is based on five investigations. In the prevalence and familial studies, 1059 children and 138 first-degree sibs were investigated. The three longitudinal clinical studies comprised 215 primary molars in infraocclusion and the children were subjected to clinical and radiographic examinatio

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) cause progressive damage of brain structures, resulting in a loss of function and, eventually, the patient's death. Current therapeutic strategies are limited to late stages of the disease, culminating in palliative care, while tackling the underlying causes of neurodegeneration could halt or at least slow down the disease at an early stage. In this vein, stem cell transplantation therapies are emerging as a promising alternative, as such as cells can penetrate the central nervous system, engraft, differentiate, and secrete neurotrophic, neuro-regenerative, an

In twelve patients aged 13 to 24, histological examinations of twenty persistent milk teeth (with persistency having been due to aplasia of permanent teeth) showed that root resorptions are possible in such cases too. Cellular resorption results in the root being decomposed lacunally or linerly, respectively. The formation of osteodentin, which is a result of the phase of apposition and which is taking place in the pulp and along the surface of resorption, respectively, is considered a characteristic concomitant phenomenon. However, this tissue does not cause "true ankylosis". Accordingly, use

Supernumerary teeth (ST) are a form of abnormal dental development and may not always present with symptoms. This case report discusses an eight-year-old child who presented with spacing in the maxillary anterior region. Radiographic examination revealed bilateral impacted and inverted mesiodentes, which were successfully managed through surgical extraction and orthodontic treatment. The postoperative course was uneventful, resulting in satisfactory outcomes for both the patient and his parents. We emphasize the importance of periodic check-ups during the early stages of tooth exfoliation, inc…

Cell therapy is one of the important therapeutic approaches in the treatment of many diseases such as cancer, degenerative diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. Among various cell types, which could be used as cell therapies, stem cell therapy has emerged as powerful tools in the treatment of several diseases. Multipotent stem cells are one of the main classes of stem cells that could originate from different parts of the body such as bone marrow, adipose, placenta, and tooth. Among several types of multipotent stem cells, tooth-derived stem cells (TDSCs) are associated with special propertie

BACKGROUND: A subcategory of chronic neutropenia is chronic benign neutropenia, which is characterized by a prolonged non-cyclic neutropenia as the sole abnormality, with no underlying disease to which the neutropenia can be attributed. Chronic neutropenia is defined as a low absolute neutrophil count for >6 months. In this presentation, periodontitis seems to be the sole manifestation of a juvenile patient with chronic benign neutropenia. A 7-year-old white male presented with periodontitis of the primary dentition and early tooth loss. His medical and dental history was otherwise unremarkabl

The role of crowded teeth in the etiology of attachment loss was studied in thirty teeth extracted for orthodontic reasons from eight children 12 to 13 years of age. Following extraction, the teeth were stained in a 1 percent solution of water blue and examined under the stereomicroscope. In one third of the thirty teeth, a 0.9, 2.0, and 3.5 mm. loss of attachment was observed on surfaces adjacent to which another tooth had erupted into an extremely crowded environment. On the same surfaces, subgingival plaque had grown down to the area of the cementoenamel junction. The premature loss of atta

AIM: To evaluate the dentin microhardness of primary teeth undergoing indirect pulp capping (IPC) after partial caries removal.
MATERIALS: Primary molars were treated with IPC, restored with self-etching primer (Clearfil SE Bond; CSE), and filled with composite resin (Filtek Z250) with (n = 10) or without (n = 7) a calcium hydroxide base liner (Dycal; Dy). After tooth exfoliation, the microhardness of the demineralized dentin remaining under the restoration (n = 17) was analyzed and compared with that of sound and carious primary dentin (n = 20). Microhardness measurements were obtained from …
