Uselessness of a questionnaire for osteoporosis and role of bone mass measurements in predicting tooth loss.

AIM: We evaluated whether the number of teeth lost is associated with risk factors for osteoporosis and whether bone mass measurements can a … age class (P<0.001) and ultrasound bone profile index (UBPI) (P=0.041) were independently linked to tooth loss. CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained showed that age is the main determinant of tooth loss and that QUS adds further information in identifying patients at a higher risk of tooth loss.

Interactive effects of periodontitis and orthodontic tooth movement on dental root resorption, tooth movement velocity and alveolar bone loss in a rat model.

BACKGROUND: Many adult orthodontic patients suffer from chronic periodontitis with recurrent episodes of active periodontal inflammation. As their number is steadily increasing, orthodontists are more and more frequently challenged by respective treatment considerations. However, little is currently known regarding interactive effects on undesired dental root resorption (DRR), tooth movement velocity, periodontal bone loss and the underlying cellular and tissue reactions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 63 male Fischer344 rats were used in three consecutive experiments employing 21 animals e

Timing matters: denture use for cognitive protection is most effective before major tooth loss.

BACKGROUND: Tooth loss is a potential risk factor for cognitive decline, but the longitudinal evidence on the protective role of dentures and the intervention timing remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the associations of tooth loss, denture use, and their changes with distinct cognitive trajectories among older adults. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of 2188 community-dwelling older adults from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (2008-2014). Group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM) identified heterogeneous cognitive pathways. Multinomial logistic re…

Tooth Loss, Denture Use and Malnutrition in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS).

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the associations among tooth loss, denture use and malnutrition in Chinese older adults, and to identify malnutrition risk factors by dentition status. BACKGROUND: Malnutrition affects 7.7% of older adults in China and is associated with tooth loss, which impairs chewing. Dentures are commonly used to mitigate this, but their influence on malnutrition remains unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of 13,234 individuals aged 60 and older from the 8th wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) was conducted. Data on tooth lo…

[Predictive value of tooth loss risk with 2018 new classification of periodontitis:a literature review].

The occurrence, progression and treatment efficacy of periodontitis are affected by many factors. Development on accurate estimation of prognosis is essential for treatment plan determination. The application of the 2018 new classification of periodontitis is one of the most important advances in the prognosis and risk assessment of periodontitis. The predictive value of the new classification on tooth loss risk had been evaluated by several latest researches, however, consensus still lacks. This review focused on the predictive efficacy of the 2018 new classification of periodontitis on tooth…

Relationship between tooth loss and mortality in 80-year-old Japanese community-dwelling subjects.

BACKGROUND: Findings from several studies suggest associations between tooth loss and health outcomes, including malnutrition, poor quality of life, and mortality, in older individuals. However, limited information is available regarding whether those associations remain true in very elderly subjects after adequately considering confounding factors such as sex and smoking status. Herein, we determined whether the number of teeth in 80-year-old subjects is an independent predictor of mortality. METHODS: We initially contacted 1282 80-year-old community-dwelling individuals born in 1917, of who…

Motor axon loss is associated with hand dysfunction in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease 1a.

BACKGROUND: Charcot Marie Tooth type 1a (CMT1a) is a primarily demyelinating neuropathy, characterized by slowly progressive muscle weakness, atrophy, and sensory loss, and is most pronounced in both feet and hands. There is increasing evidence that muscle weakness is determined by motor axonal dysfunction. OBJECTIVE: To investigate in patients with CMT1a whether motor axon loss, as estimated with motor unit number estimation (MUNE) and compound muscle action potential (CMAP), is related to hand function and manual dexterity. METHODS: Hand function, manual dexterity, and axon loss were studi

[Dental tours de force 6. Autotransplantation in case of agenesis or traumatic tooth loss].

Autotransplantation of a tooth is probably the most natural method to replace a missing or lost tooth. This treatment has been performed successfully already for more than twenty years. The prognosis of a transplanted tooth is determined by tooth type, stage of root formation at the time of transplantation, surgical technique used, and duration and way of splinting. Determining the optimal stage of root formation of the tooth is very important in planning the autotransplantation. If the transplantation is carried out successfully, the transplanted tooth behaves at its new location just like be

Risk indicators for future clinical attachment loss in adult periodontitis. Tooth and site variables.

In an earlier report, we examined the relationship of patient-derived clinical and epidemiological variables to the risk for future clinical attachment loss (CAL) in chronic adult periodontitis. We determined that the extent of the patient's existing periodontal disease as measured by mean attachment loss (MAL) and the patient's age were the most important patient-derived risk indicators for CAL among those factors evaluated. In this study, we examined the tooth and site variables that were associated with CAL. Seventy-five patients with chronic adult periodontitis were followed for 6 months.

Shame over tooth loss: between psychological suffering and structural inequality in Chilean oral health.

The article analyzes how tooth loss among older adults is not merely a clinical issue but a social and emotional phenomenon marked by shame, stigma, and structural inequality in oral health in Chile. From a qualitative, narrative approach with a descriptive scope and a hermeneutic (interpretive) orientation, 12 interviews were conducted in the commune of Cerro Navia, in the Metropolitan Region of Chile, between August and September 2024. The narratives reveal that tooth loss affects self-esteem, identity, and social participation. Shame manifests in behaviors such as covering the mouth, avoidi…

Multi-Centre External Validation of a Nomogram for 10-Year Periodontal Tooth Loss Prediction.

AIMS: To externally validate the potential applicability of the 2018 classification of periodontal diseases as a risk assessment tool, through the use of a nomogram built on a multivariate predictor model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from 459 patients with periodontitis, across four cohorts (three in the United States, and one in the United Kingdom), were retrospectively analysed. After staging and grading periodontitis before active periodontal therapy (APT), patients were categorised by the model as having 'low tooth loss' (≤ 1 teeth lost due periodontal reasons [TLP]) or 'high tooth loss' …

Strong Heart, Strong Smile: Tooth Loss and Incidence of CVD in American Indian Populations.

OBJECTIVES: Tooth loss and cardiovascular disease (CVD) share risk factors and complex pathways in disease progression and co-morbidities. To date, little research on the relationship between tooth loss and CVD has been conducted in American Indian populations. This study investigated the prevalence of edentulism among American Indian adults and its association with the incidence of CVD. METHODS: The ongoing longitudinal Strong Heart Study (SHS) is being conducted in rural American Indian communities in North Dakota, South Dakota and Oklahoma since 1989. This cohort study included SHS partici…

Tooth loss induces cognitive decline independent of low-protein diet intake in male mice.

OBJECTIVES: Previous articles have shown that tooth loss is associated with cognitive decline in animal and human studies. Additionally, poor nutritional status including low-protein diet is associated with dementia. The evidence of the association of tooth loss and nutritional status is uncertain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between low-protein diet intake and cognitive decline following tooth loss in mice. DESIGN: Male senescence-accelerated mouse-prone 8 mice were randomly allocated into sham-operated control and tooth loss groups with extracted maxillary …
