Trabeculectomy with the use of sodium hyaluronate. A prospective study.

The effect of sodium hyaluronate (Healon) on the post-operative course and IOP 1 week and 1 month after trabeculectomy is reported. Twenty-nine eyes of 23 patients with open-angle glaucoma (10 simple, 11 capsular and 8 secondary glaucoma) were operated with the use of sodium hyaluronate. The study was prospective. For comparison, 29 eyes of 21 age- and sex-matched patients with glaucoma, operated during the pre-Healon period were selected. Patients in the study group were operated by the same surgeon and in the control group by different senior staff members. The method for trabeculectomy is d…

Effectiveness of nonpenetrating trabeculectomy in aphakic patients with glaucoma.

Nonpenetrating trabeculectomy was performed on 28 aphakic eyes consisting of 18 with chronic open-angle glaucoma and 10 with secondary and/or complicated glaucoma. The canal of Schlemm and the juxtacanalicular trabecular meshwork were excised for a length of 4 mm beneath a 6 mm x 6 mm scleral flap. At one year postoperatively, 72.0% of all patients were controlled, 24% required no antiglaucoma medications. However, 88% of chronic simple glaucoma patients were satisfactorily controlled. The mean follow-up period was 1.4 years. Minimal complications have been encountered to date. Nonpenetrating …

Trabeculectomy: a review and 4-year follow-up.

Since the first attempt at glaucoma surgery in 1830 many surgical procedures have been devised and adopted depending on the understanding of the aetiology and pathogenesis of the disease. Trabeculectomy, the most recent drainage procedure for glaucoma, has become a widely used, effective, and safe method, particularly for chronic simple glaucoma. Up to 4 years' follow-up of 66 eyes (55 patients) is reported. The findings at 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, and 4 years were in agreement with previous reports by other authors. The main postoperative complication was transient hyphaema. Of the…

Trabeculectomy and the progression of glaucomatous visual field loss.

Twenty-four eyes of 20 patients with chronic open angle glaucoma who had a trabeculectomy were studied retrospectively. Trabeculectomy resulted in a significant lowering of mean intraocular pressures and improvement of pressure control for the group. Progression of visual field defects occurred in all 24 eyes preoperatively, while postoperatively, the fields of 14 eyes showed no change, but the other ten showed further progression. A comparison of the pressures of the eyes showing continued progression after surgery with the eyes showing no further progression revealed no significant differenc…

Changes in corneal endothelial cell density after trabeculectomy.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness worldwide for which trabeculectomy is the most effective surgical intervention for advanced disease. However, trabeculectomy has been associated with alterations to corneal endothelium, including a decrease in corneal endothelial cell density (CECD). The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in CECD after trabeculectomy, and identify factors contributing to cell loss, such as pre-operative biometry and lens status. METHODS: This retrospective study included 72 eyes of 60 patients who underwent trabeculectomy between January 2018 …
