Biobanks play a central role in pediatric translational research, which deals primarily with genetic data from sample-based research. However, participation of children in biobanking has received only limited attention in the literature, even though research in general and in clinical trials in particular have a long history in involving minors. So, we resolved to explore specific challenging ethical, legal, and societal issues (ELSI) in the current pediatric biobanking landscape to propose a way forward for biobanking with children as partners in research. Methodologically, we first establish

In controlled proof-of-concept studies, healthcare artificial intelligence (AI) systems now routinely match or exceed specialist-level performance. Despite these impressive technical achievements, most systems remain confined to research settings, highlighting an opportunity to better prepare academic AI research for subsequent clinical translation. Successful translation requires attention to technical, regulatory, organizational, and infrastructural factors, ideally from the earliest stages of research. This Perspective focuses on trustworthiness as a key factor that academic researchers can

Scholarship knows no geographical boundaries. This science diplomacy and biotechnology journalism article introduces an original concept and policy petition to innovate the global translational science, a Science Peace Corps. Service at the new Corps could entail volunteer work for a minimum of 6 weeks, and up to a maximum of 2 years, for translational research in any region of the world to build capacity manifestly for development and peace, instead of the narrow bench-to-bedside model of life science translation. Topics for translational research are envisioned to include all fields of life

Animal models are commonly used for translational research despite evidence that the methodology of these studies is often inconsistent and substandard. This study describes the characteristics and impact of published research using animal models in the American Journal of Sports Medicine (AJSM). Peer-reviewed articles published in the AJSM between January 1990 and January 2010 using animal models were identified using MEDLINE. The articles were reviewed for funding source, anesthesia used, animal used, study type, study location, outcome measures, number of animals, duration of animal surviva

Immune-checkpoint biomarkers in gynecologic cancers primarily estimate antigenic potential or characterize an inhibited immune response. However, they do not establish whether malignant cells are visible to antigen-specific lymphocytes. We define antigen-presentation competence as the capacity of the tumor-immune ecosystem to generate antigenic peptides, display them through functional human leukocyte antigen molecules, prime cognate T cells through professional antigen-presenting cells, and permit recognition of malignant cells by effector lymphocytes. Recurrent defects have been reported at

Our understanding of the pathogenesis of intracranial aneurysms has been deepened through a series of studies. In this process, animal models of intracranial aneurysms have contributed greatly by providing experimental evidence with the causative relationship. Currently, intracranial aneurysms are considered a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the bifurcation site of intracranial arteries driven by non-physiological hemodynamic loading due to unique morphology of the lesions. On the basis of elucidated molecular mechanisms regulating intracranial aneurysm pathology, a clear possibility fo

Iodine metabolism has a central role in thyroid physiology and thyroid cancer biology, shaping both tumour behaviour and therapeutic strategies. Within the past 20 years, advancements in molecular research and targeted therapies have transformed the understanding of iodine metabolism in thyroid cancer and subsequently changed clinical management. In differentiated thyroid carcinomas, the ability of tumour cells to concentrate iodide provides the biological foundation of radioactive iodine treatment. However, loss of iodide-handling machinery function drives refractoriness in advanced disease,

PURPOSE: Neuro-oncology generates complex clinical, imaging, and molecular data, yet datasets remain relatively small and fragmented across modalities and institutions. While "big data" is traditionally defined by large sample size, neuro-oncology datasets are often characterized instead by high dimensionality. This study aims to provide an overview of the landscape of major U.S. neuro-oncology data resources and evaluate how these datasets are used in contemporary research.
METHODS: A selection of neuro-oncology datasets was evaluated, including population registries, clinical data networks,

Sepsis remains one of the most diagnostically challenging syndromes due to its clinical heterogeneity, overlapping host-pathogen responses, and lack of a singular biomarker. Biosensors are redefining this landscape by moving beyond slow, culture-based methods toward real-time, multiplexed, and clinically validated diagnostic platforms. In this review, we synthesize advances across substrate engineering, nanomaterial-enabled amplification, and next-generation biorecognition elements, including aptamers, AMPs, PNAs, XNAs, and CRISPR systems, supported by real-world case studies that demonstrate

Migraine is a debilitating brain disorder for which there remains a considerable therapeutic gap that needs to be addressed in order to develop novel effective treatment options for patients. Preclinical translational models have contributed significantly to migraine research by improving our understanding of migraine pathophysiology as well as identifying and validating new drug targets. In this review, we will summarise key animal models and discuss how commonly used experimental readouts used in these models can be integrated for the investigation of the various phases of a migraine attack.

The onset of epilepsy in adulthood occurs most commonly after 55 years of age. Given the ageing global population, this disorder represents an increasing burden on healthcare and society. The bidirectional link between epilepsy and dementia is a focus of intense research with underlying tau pathology highlighted as a potential mechanistic link. In this review, we examine the evidence for tau-related neurodegenerative processes in epilepsy beginning with how changes in biochemical and structural properties of the tau protein can lead to abnormal phosphorylation and pathological aggregation. We

Deformable Discoidal Polymeric Nanoconstructs (DPN) represent a biomimetic drug-delivery platform designed to overcome the limitations of conventional spherical nanoparticles. Their discoidal geometry, tunable deformability, and PLGA/PEG-based composition promote vascular margination, reduce phagocytic sequestration, prolong circulation, and enhance accumulation at pathological sites. This review highlights the design principles, fabrication strategies, therapeutic applications, and translational potential of DPN. In oncology, DPN have been engineered to improve the loading and sustained relea

Diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) is a common complication of types 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Peripheral sensory axons are early and primary targets of DPN, rendering sensory loss, pain and impaired quality of life. While several metabolic and other abnormalities, including abnormal insulin signaling and mitochondrial dysfunction contribute toward DPN, effective therapy to reverse or arrest the disorder is not currently available. DPN is a degenerative condition that involves retraction of distal sensory terminals and failure of regenerative repair. This review summarizes current mechanisms
